The word ‘hipster’ is so overused and due to the backlash against the hipster cliche, I swore to never use the term again as part of my vocabulary. Yet someone’s comment about the Portlandia look was spot on, and I’m almost forced to place this outfit in the hipster category, as the look is played out all over Brooklyn, Austin, TX and Portland.
On a personal level, I much prefer the dandy look (opulent textured fabrics and tailored clothing) I’ve seen popping up all over Manhattan, and the cultural currency of the hipster icon can’t die off soon enough. I’ll take the Oswald Boateng look, or even Todd Snyder’s style (melding NY urbanity and Midwestern rusticity) any day over the hipster uniform du jour: the skinny cropped pants, shrunken sweater and chukka boots.
I love the maxim of Snyder’s idol, Hardy Ames, that he tries to live up to: “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.”

Perfect grooming, very well-cut corduroy pants, signature turtleneck and a half-coat to accomplish it all. And the 12 points go to italy. ….

The coat is great. His pants look a little too gathered at the crotch. I’m supposing this might be to make the length shorter???

Nice. Clean. Spiff. Focused. Attractive and also utilitarian, one of my favorite sartorial combinations. Perfect!
