It’s tough – there is some irony certainly – but that jacket might be one of the 1k$ Paul Smith numbers, which is a fair bit to pay for a joke. I agree that the 80′s preppy summer is about to crank up the volume – though it’s front runner, the lacoste shirt has long since oversaturated. I think perhaps he is just a bit too “LFO – Summer Girls” to get full irony points. A bit like Prince William in a nazi outfit…
Sartorialist, I’m with YOU. The popped collar is just taking the preppy trend and poking a little fun at it – and this guy obviously has the self-confidence to pull it off.
Remember the popped collar article in Details about a year ago? Even that criticism came too late, as typical for American fashion magazines. It is considered quite guache to wear one’s collars up these days. One reads magazines to see what not to do.

This is sloppy, not preppy!

don’t you think this “preppy” is done with a healthy does of Lower East Side irony?
The jacket is to small, the shoes, the popped collar
i think he is in on the joke

There’s a lot of Kanye West influence in this look from the purposely popped collar and the unlaced shoes.

If this is ironic, irony is overrated.

I can’t tell ih he’s in on the joke, or if he’s trying too hard to do the 80′s look.
I aslo don’t get a sense of irony from this look.

I’d chance it, to be honest. Why not? Fashion should be fun and if you poke fun at yourself a bit in the process, so what, should enjoy dressing!

He reminds me of one of the “cool jock” types that used to beat on the nerds in the 80′s movies. It works on him I guess, but I don’t like the shoes.

this outfit scares but not necessarily in a bad way? seems to be causing some controversy what with all the deleted responses. very interesting…

The fact that there as such differing opinions should tell you it works. The pictures where everyone agrees I find to be terribly dull.

I will get a jacket l ike that for sure this summer. But not a 1000$ PS, rather a vintage from Oxfam or similar.

I like the look, except for the shoes, which are so new looking that they say: “I just put this outfit together yesterday.”
