Love the simplicity of her black against the vibrancy of the street art. The coloured scarf makes a great link. Shiny tights, thank goodness, because otherwise I would feel quite cold looking at this!

I’m not sure why you were compelled to take this picture. Nothing particularly interesting save the fact that she doesn’t dress for the weather. It almost feels like a picture from your earlier years, when it didn’t take much to grab your attention.

      February 4, 2013 at 6:49 am

She actually does. Winter in Netherlands isn’t so harsh that a pair of tights wouldn’t fend it off. Sun is shining so I’d guess it’s 0°C or warmer – which, actually, doesn’t need any kind of winter gear.

Nice, carefree photo. Liking the legs. :)

    • Martine

      February 4, 2013 at 10:24 am

She grabs my attention. And Scott has already said that he didn’t care much about other peoples concerns about how they think one should dress for the weather. Its pretty much obvious that she isn’t a tiny bit cold, so if she is comfy, then she IS dressed for the weather. Just not to your liking. The long sweater, the boots, the red scarf are definitely attention grabbing, and her legs seal the deal.

    Another shot of Amsterdam, nice.

Why letting her stand in front of that wall? Just curious …my POV she kinda blemds in to much so she doesn’t stands out (even though shot wide open).

In this shot it seems like the surrounding in more important / overrulimg the subject(her).

Don’t think you actually reply on your comments…. But hey, I won’t know if I don’t try.

I would surmise by the amount of underexposed glare in the frame that Scott probably tried to photograph her from the other side first but the sun must have been too bright. This was taken either just after sunrise or just before sunset when the sun is at its most merciless. One can also take into account that when the sun is in these positions, there is so much UV that bounces up from the snow that it’s near impossible to shoot a subject in front of the sun because finding the right combination of ISO/shutter speed will probably result in a loss of significant contrast. As his shadow — he’s surely taken way too many photographs by now for that to have been a ‘mistake’. What often gets lost when looking at street style portraits are the circumstances; all you see is what he snapped. We have no idea how crowded the street was, or who or what was behind him… we just trust that this is the photo he had to take, because he’s a professional who’s taken 100s of 1,000s.

Or maybe he liked the wall. I do. I thought about it too. But decided she doesn’t get lost, the wall helps give more interest to the setting without detracting from her. Maybe its a mistake but one that works better then the correct way.

    Scott,

I like your shadow in the shot.
In my home country of Australia it can be very difficult not have your shadow in the picture at most times of the year, precisely of the clarity of light there.

It’s also very in the tradition of Italian neo realist/French cinema verite which, like your blog- were all about capturing life and everyday people on the street.

The director/photographer is always present and influences the shot/scene/encounter with the subject.

It’s important to not always perpetuate the illusion that they’re not.

I like her in front of that wall. She still stands out, but she isn’t the first thing you see. The wall is. Interesting. I thought photographers weren’t supposed to do that. But its a great picture anyhow. Looks more interesting then if she were standing in front of something plain.

I can just hear my mother, telling this young woman to get those bangs out of her eyes! And, even though I don’t like to admit it, I have to say that in this case I agree with mom. The bangs are a tad too much.

I know this has been a bit of a redundant topic throughout your winter weather posts, but bare legs in the winter just drive me crazy! I just find it so distracting to look at. Instead of thinking about how great she looks, I just think about how she’s trying too hard. Living in Toronto, it’s just reminiscent of far too many ladies who parade around the clubbing district half naked in in below zero weather trying to look ‘hot’.

  75. Lo

    February 4, 2013 at 1:33 pm

a PS to my last comment: I live for bare legs and have always hated layering in the cold weather, but it’s fun to embrace it as a challenge, like coordinating looks based around tights, or putting great men’s dress socks on instead of having bare ankles in between my skinnies and oxfords.

  76. Lala

    February 4, 2013 at 4:11 pm

I think that the effect of bare legs is produced by this little, familiar object called “pantyhose” (which are back this season big time, aren’t they?). .. She is really gorgeous. I particularly love the haircut and the strength she exudes!

I’m very partial to Scott’s earlier images, which always captured something unique about (seemingly) ordinary people going about their lives, and still giving off an interesting vibe through a small detail of their outfit, a pose or even hand gesture. I miss that old, more “ordinary” Sartorialist sometimes (you seem to focus on the super-fashionable jetsetting fashion crowd more these days). This photo reminds me of these older images. I love it!
