June 18, 2006 at 10:13 am
wow! that’s front page!
June 18, 2006 at 10:27 am
Cool shorts. He’s super fit, nice athletic build. Really ready for summer on the beach…
June 18, 2006 at 10:34 am
Wow. I suppose you could have made some facile comment about the perfect length of his boardshorts or the carefully low-slung waist…but no, better to let the abs speak for themselves.
June 18, 2006 at 10:48 am
break me off a piece of that!
June 18, 2006 at 11:19 am
Come on, is this turning into a gay blog or what? What does muscles have to do with style?
June 18, 2006 at 11:47 am
He is really HOT!!!!
June 18, 2006 at 12:13 pm
This has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of individual style. Everyone just seems to be salivating over the exposed parts of his body.
June 18, 2006 at 12:18 pm
I guess 2% body fat is always in style.
June 18, 2006 at 12:40 pm
i believe “beefcake” is a better word than “sartorialist” in this case…
June 18, 2006 at 12:46 pm
yummy! thank you sarto!
June 18, 2006 at 2:49 pm
i can’t stand boardshorts
give me a pair of cute Vilebrequin trunks anyday

June 18, 2006 at 4:29 pm
this is the kind of guy that’d make me forget my name

For a straight guy, you have excellent taste in half-undressed men. But then, we’re all bombarded with this Sears-suit-wearing gym-bunny image all the time. So, for anybody, it’s nice to see a guy who takes care of himself, without it looking like he tries to hard, and pulling of beach casual with grace and ease. Thanks once again, The Sartorialist.

June 18, 2006 at 5:12 pm
He looks great, you make me consider to move to New York ;plol
June 18, 2006 at 5:20 pm
The blue shorts work well with the yellow-striped ball. Very “Life Aquatic.”
June 18, 2006 at 5:59 pm
Huh? I think he’s actually kind of sickly looking. And those board shorts are straight off a rack… I have seen exactly the same pair at least half a dozen times this week alone while out surfing. I’m very confused by the sartorial content of this post.
June 18, 2006 at 6:08 pm
i thought boardshorts were passe only acceptable for the abercrombie and frat crowd now
June 18, 2006 at 7:12 pm
And this has what to do with style? It’s a half naked guy in off the rack shorts.
June 18, 2006 at 8:21 pm
This seems rather out of place for this blog. It seems like our beloved Sartorialist let hot bodies get in the way of his work!

June 18, 2006 at 8:43 pm
Scott, Bruce Weber called. He needs his model back.
June 18, 2006 at 9:53 pm
Wow, so this post really hit a nerve
Someone said they see this all the time when they go surfing, Well I live in Manhattan – we don’t surf so I don’t see many board shorts. I’m sure my Norway readers don’t see a ton of board shorts.
Second, since guys don’t have a lot of options in the heat of summer, I have always (almost jokingly) said that good muscle definition is one of the best accessories a guy can have for tee shirts and shorts.Sorry but shorts and a good tee are inescapable for Manhattan summers.
Finally I have always said that this blog is about inspiration – I have been working my ass off lately to get back in the shape I want to be in, I have created my own Made-to-Measure body – this photo is a goal of where I would like to get to, I probably wont get all the way there but I won’t be far off.
Finally finally as a photographer heavily influenced by Bruce Weber, when you see a shot like this how do you pass it up?
October 15, 2012 at 10:35 pm
Have only seen you dressed, but don’t see how you can come close to this as your goal. Not a bad thing; you just seem more stocky. As a shorty myself, I will never look like this, and I’m fine with that. I can lose a few pounds, but will never have the 28-inch waist I had thru most of college – wouldn’t want to. Anyway, much like we are always saying to the ladies – be happy (or, happier) with the way you are. I say, just be the best “you” you can be. Thanks for your blog. Always gives me something to think about, and often a chance to practice my analytic and writing skills.
June 18, 2006 at 10:19 pm
Often, when people are critical they are merely projecting some dissatisfactory image of themselves. Someone who can label this as sickly looking is most likely in sickly bad shape themselves. In addition, here they can do it with annonimity.
I work hard too…and I was inspired. Yes, and I am straight.
you don’t see that many boardshorts in manhattan? – i thought those were everywhere…kind of like how someone here already mentioned that it’s part of the abercrombie and frat crowd
hopefully we can see some more options in terms of mens swimwear
new york times article on the boardshorts trend
June 18, 2006 at 10:25 pm
no i see very few board shorts in the city, maybe at the beach but i have not been there yet this summer
June 18, 2006 at 11:26 pm
Heck its HIS blog… let him post whatever he wants for whatever reason.~Sarah (libby)
June 18, 2006 at 11:51 pm
bravo. you have managed to post 2 people that i happened to have also seen in person this week (the first being the bright red/orange flower dress). i saw this boy shagging balls at the beach volleyball court in central park. and yes, that is the proper volleyball terminology.
June 19, 2006 at 1:08 am
I don’t see how anyone can pass up taking a picture of that guy!
June 19, 2006 at 1:59 am
I can understand why some people complain, but as our beloved Sartorialist has said, this is NOT a fashion blog, but a STYLE/INSPIRATION blog. I am not sure if it’s only me with English as second language, but to me, the definition of the word ‘style’ is not really restricted to certain things. I think it is how a person projects him/herself to the outside world – often in fashion style but not always. It may be some particular facial expression, haristyle, way of movement, pose, atmosphere, and of course, how the person has fitted his/her body.
Of course it takes tremendously more time and effort to get into a body shape you want than to get a new do or a well-tailored suit. Nonetheless, it is another kind of effort made to express who you are in non-verbal way..
If this guy said “I exercised purely for aesthetic reason”, will people be content? If all of my argument fails, then taking this photo not as a ‘style’ shoot but just as an inspirational NY scene – like those landscapes or whatever.
Lastly, to the Sartorialist: do freely what you want to do. This is your blog, after all. And good luck in your endeavour!
June 19, 2006 at 3:00 am
May I boast a little? My boyfriend looks like this guy having slim but muscular body. Lucky me ))
And I’m all in favour of every person who works hard attempting to create his/her body. Good Luck!
June 19, 2006 at 5:39 am
The cut of a shirt, the cut of his abs, its all aesthetics. What makes sartorialist great is the RANGE of his repetoire and appeal.-Jenny
June 19, 2006 at 6:19 am
i was just wondering, do you ever get tired of how petty and bitchy people can be and just want to punch them in the nose? i love love love your blog and love reading the comments, but bloody hell… i wonder if people are slobbed out in front of their computers in unimaginative office wear of perhaps grotty tracksuit pants and t-shirts with cereal slopped down the front as they declare these lovely people too thin or “too 2005″ or in need of a smaller bag or better sandal.
June 19, 2006 at 10:23 am
I love this photo. This is a fresh example of New York style, inspiration, and attractiveness. Sartorialist, can you please shoot in Central Park more often?
June 19, 2006 at 12:32 pm
Gee, I hadn’t even noticed the shorts. ;-)
June 19, 2006 at 4:04 pm
i’m standing by you on this one sartorialist. i love love how you hit the streets and follow your heart. you are a great non-snob. i even like how you didn’t print my one comment one day where i got all catty! heck i would have been ashamed to have it out there anyway.
your range is great, it makes the blog, it really does!
June 20, 2006 at 2:09 am
gah. he looks better shirtless than any of those other folks look in their high priced couture.
love him. and his lovely volleyball. love love.
June 20, 2006 at 5:45 am
Actually, we see quite a few boardshorts here in Norway too, but I’m not going to complain. This guy looks hot, comfortable in his own skin, and appears to have a natural and healthy approach to working out (not too big, but still toned). If that’s not inspirational, then what is?
June 20, 2006 at 6:08 am
Want to be i N.Y too…instead im stocked in STHLM…hmmmm…we dont have soo many “hunks” in the parks around here ;)!!
June 20, 2006 at 10:31 am
I love how some of the guys who are usually drooling over women pictured on this blog are now annoyed when a hot guy is shown. It just proves that physical appearance has so much to do with how we respond to the clothes someone’s wearing! When you’re tall and blonde, or in this case tall dark and built you are “stylish.” Welcome to the world we women live in every day! HAHAhahaha
June 20, 2006 at 10:49 am
All I can say is rated R for rrrawr!!
June 20, 2006 at 3:23 pm
this guy’s f’in hot, and I’m a straight guy. he just needs bigger chest muscles i think.
otherwise good post.

Now that’s what I call RELIGION!
June 21, 2006 at 7:33 pm
boardshorts are still cool. How did you know? Of course if you are up in Stavanger this summer you are still more likely to see full-body neoprene.
June 23, 2006 at 8:04 am
HOTT guy!!! …and YES, I am gay with a lean muscular build. RELAX all you haters and go to the gym so you can start loving yourself and stop hating other!…jealous!
June 25, 2006 at 12:41 pm
the thing thats a turn off is that he KNOWS he’s attractive..a touch of modesty never goes astray!
June 29, 2006 at 5:31 pm
June 30, 2006 at 2:17 am
how YOU doin? DAMN!
June 30, 2006 at 2:22 am
anon @ 12:41– that’s ridiculous. what is he supposed to do, pretend to be ugly? you’re sounding very jealous right now.
July 30, 2006 at 7:08 am
I agree with Scott. There is a reason why so many of us are sweating like pigs in the gym in the heat of summer. Can hardly be stylish with flab bulging out at every corner. I work out so I can wear clothes, and if I had the young man’s abs, I would be walking around shirtless too.
And the model is NOT sickly. Sickly people do not have shoulders the size of his. Let us all compliment him on having a fine body, thank Scott for taking great pictures, and move on. Snarky people can go to Fashion Addict Diary.
