It takes me years to find a new flannel and this year I found something by the brand AR at Barneys. Rich colors. Good scale to the pattern and great proportions. The great part is, once you find the right piece you can enjoy it for years. It is a timeless look despite being on trend right now.
I have a plaid chamois shirt from LL Bean that I get a size big so that I can layer underneath (I have to get the arms shortened). Love it. It is just heavy enough.
I bet Scot would look great in a nice simple overjacket like that. I love this guys coat, and the shirt does go well. Its not the sort of look that plays well with self consciousness.
You can’t miss w/ Pendleton. The new Portland collection is so fresh. However, I recently found some great vintage Pendleton pieces that look contemporary today.
I bought a vintage plaid wool coat at What Comes Around Goes Around in NYC several years ago and it’s one of my all-time favourite pieces! Bold, but timeless :)
I find it funny this person was probably not trying to be fashionable judging by the dirty jeans, beat up shoes and gatorade and water in hand. I would know: my farmer husband wers similar stuff but for function, not fashion!
dude is clearly hungover. what’s noteworthy is that he looks this good when he’s just left the apartment for cigs and rehydrations and will spend maximum 20 minutes outside.

You can find lots of places for plaid outerwear. Moreover, the authentic stuff is not expensive at Sportsman’s Guide, Walls, Carhart, Cabela’s, Bean or their outlets.
but you’re aware this type of guy threw this on without a look in the mirror..? he wasn’t “playing” with any pattern combo, he was going to his trade job on a brisk day.
Or at least many people do wear something just like this to a manual job. But that doesn’t mean someone can’t take parts of his great, very unselfconscious look and make something more refined out of it if they wanted to.
And the guy in the picture has certainly NEVER done any manual labor in his life. Look at his hand.
I like plaid and stripes.
I like beat up shoes.
I also didn’t realize that to be photographed for this blog you had to be trying? People’s functional outfits can be inspiration too, no?
If it’s not a Pendleton it sure looks like one. Pendleton is still owned by the Bishop family The mill in Washougal Washington weaves the linear designs and the mill in Pendleton weaves the more curvy, jaquard-type work. Both mills offer interesting tours. and have fantastic selections of items for sale, bits from the mill, buttons, yardage, blankets, clothing.
I feel like over thinking plaid flannel is kinda defeating the whole point. It is like spending an hour in front of the mirror trying to purposely make your hair look greasy/messy. It loses its authenticity. In my humble opinion.
Pendleton in Portland! Timeless savoir faire. You can find Pendleton jackets, shirts, women’s suits at any and all Portland area thrift stores. Vintage is still going strong out here, you should come on out and have a look.

With your stature, I’d think you’d look great in the famous “On the Waterfront” jacket that Brando wore.

Scott, great idea from Kiel West above, a plaid jacket “a la Brando” would fit you well because the band at the waist would eliminate the boxy look.
