I never question Scott’s photography skills – I love his placement, use of light, angles, you name it. But I think he shoots a wide variety of styles: classic, tasteful, questionable, fantastic, bizarre, amazing, awful, you name it – sometimes with a view to blowing us away with someone’s sartorialism … or to spark dialogue.
It’s like when people become famous or rich – all of a sudden they’re considered “hot”, “gorgeous”, “amazing” … I sometimes find that happens here. Because they’re on The Sartorialist – my favourite blog on the planet – all of a sudden they’re the most exquisite fashion plate ever.
Often they are; sometimes they are not.
But no matter what – I *do* often appreciate someone’s style, if I don’t actually personally *like* it.
Agree. The photos are good and I like variety, too. While sometimes I feel the posts go to extreme, testing the admirers. Other times I feel it a bit boring that on most of the pictures you see the same age and weigth group:)) skinny models just out from the show, this is not variety – very rarely what I call real persons. Of course they are not so gorgeous:)) but its a nice job to find the beauty in them, one detail which makes them unique.
you can easily guess Im a big old woman:))
A lot of the subjects are models or those in the fashion biz who have modelly looks or body types, but there is a good cross-section of actual “peeps on the streets” …. and there tends to be a broader scope of age/body types when men are photographed. I’d love to see more mature people of all body types, too. I’m a 43 year old petite woman with curves, size 8/10/12, depending on where I shop or what part of my body I’m dressing – haha – and I love variety, too.
I’m half Japanese, half English, in Canada – and I’d love to see as much ethnic diversity as possible.
I get it. I see the lines but I don’t like the forced execution. In a room full of Brooks Brother’s suits and ugly shoes I would probably want to spend the most time talking with this guy but, I don’t like the outfit at all.
Are you kidding? Innovative shoes? Christmas palette?
He seems to be out in filthy long underwear, and he’s probably painted his shoes, and just looks a mess! And we’re all supposed to ooooh and ahhhhh? Because he’s young and cute?C’mon people!
I know this guy, he went to UChicago with me. It’s funny to see all of you seriously critiquing his clothing, as he is an extreme environmentalist, and could probably care less about what clothes he’s wearing. His look is totally genuine. I’m frankly surprised to see him in NYC – I can’t imagine how he can afford to live there.
I don’t think it “pains” him to assemble such an outfit. He’s wearing a sweater over a button down, with pants and shoes. Each item itself is perhaps unique, but his individual choices were likely a result of practicality and affordability. I also used the word “critiquing”, not criticizing – a far more personal judgement.
he dances and walks in the woods.
may everyone start wearing long underwear on the sidewalks…please please.
i hope next time you get him in one of his wigs plz
Haha, so many comments presupposing that one’s clothes are always fashion/style conscious. Maybe this is just as presumptuous but the best fashion statement (if any) is in his non-statement. Dig his character. Don’t change a thing.
Very interesting! Yes it’s a mess, i realize that but who cares if others “oooh and ahhh” at what he’s wearing. This shot is probably not something i’m never going to see around where i live so seeing it on here is an interesting twist. Thanks Scott!
So funny! I’m painting my house right now and, actually, I’m wearing something that kind of looks like this: converse, checked pants, a striped t-shirt and a sweatshirt
Currently the best way men have to express their sexiness is with the pants as this man shows us. Before it was left to women to focus their expression on this part of the body. Men now are even considering very carefully their buttock.
It’s *his* expression of his own personal style – and he’s obviously comfortable with it. Capturing unique expressions of style is what The Sartorialist is all about; not putting people up for judgment. Why criticize?
even if the look isn’t likeable I still enjoy seeing it, it’s just interesting to know someone put it on an decided to wear it for themselves. It’s less interesting if it’s some big, trendy thing they wear because you know not as much thought was put into it.

I don’t think anyone is “seriously” criticizing the handsome kid. His outfit is odd.
BTW, anyone who takes the pains to assemble such an unusual outfit is definitely thinking about what he’s wearing.
I’m intrigued by what seems to be a cropped sweater over a sweater over a shirt. And what are those pants?
