i think his hair is the best thing about him, but could you take pictures of more young guys and less of guys who monogram their shirts.

His unusual pose (for a rumoured he-man) reminds me of the young lady in your previous post titled, At the Tents….the Young Lady, the one who either was, or the drape of her sweater gave her the impression of demurely rounding her shoulders. Maybe he is a Samson. He does sound like a very interesting person, look forward to the profile!

If that is Gene Krell, as a previous post identified him as, then yes, he is an interesting character. He used to own a record store, then became Vivienne Westwood’s biggest fan and supporter and has a killer collection of Vivienne’s clothes-lucky guy! Also, I seem to remember him as the doorman at Savage-a Tues. night only club in the late 80′s by or at the Chelsea Hotel.

I like the ascot; I’m wondering how old one has to be to really pull that look off. At 34 I don’t think I can quite cut it yet, but there’s at least ONE thing to look forward to about (further) aging…

Does this mean I can dust off the ascots I have been hiding in the bottom of a drawer?

I love how village-y this is. So often when you have snapped someone in the street, one of your readers knows exactly who the person is. In New Zealand (total population 4 million) we say there are only about 2 degrees of separation between people. It seems to be the same in New York.

By the way – have you caught Karen Walker at NY Fashion Week? If so, what did you think?

That’s Gene Krell, I believe, who is one of the most interesting personalities in the world of fashion. Gene was a partner in the legendary Granny Takes a Trip and later was behind much of what was going creatively on in punk London, and has been a secret chief of the creative world for decades. He worked at Barneys New York for a while and would come across Japanese people speaking Japanese commenting on clothes and surprise the hell out of them by joining right in. If anybody deserves some attention it’s Gene.

    Oh my Goood! It’s Gene.
I can not belive he is alive and well. He was seen everywhere from Copa night to Barneys floor and also in Tokyo in the ninties. Good to see you, Gene!

He looks like someone you could talk to for hours on end. It’s the color scheme I like most about his outfit.

    Yes, he is Gene.
He works as a contributing editor/fashion consultant
for both Vogue Japan and Vouge Korea and also GQ Japan and GQ Korea.
His writing and ideas are all so
    original and definitely interesting.
He lives in Tokyo at the moment after some time in Seoul.
I’d love to see him getting recognized after all this time being so brilliantly involved in the fashion industry. :)

I think his title is Fashion Director at a number of Conde Nast titles in Asia, including Japanese Vogue.

But at Granny’s he helped invent Glam, and with Vivienne, he helped make Punk happen.

He’s been more influential in fashion than most of the people he writes about.
