Andre Putman is always so stylish, a great icon of design! So nice to see her!
October 2, 2006 at 9:00 am
Key: the shades, necklace duo, and red lips…
October 2, 2006 at 9:27 am
Interesting. I know her design work. Would love to know more about her sartorial style from your perspectve. I am guessing it is the fit of her suit and the judicious accessories and her overall dignity…
October 2, 2006 at 9:42 am
Wow, having Andree Putman attend your show must be amazing. Like having the Pope bless you.

But Sart, Beppe was more casually dressed and more approachable. I’d like to see a little more casual female equivalent. She’s stylish, but a little intimidating too.

Absolutely perfect. Love the necklace with the red lips and neutral canvas of black suit!

Her understated classic look gives her an heir of authority and mystery.
October 2, 2006 at 11:54 am
I love her accessories! Check out her rockin’ silver necklace and chunky black ring. I wish my grandmother were this cool…
October 2, 2006 at 11:56 am
I love people who look like real people not someone in costume. She looks real.
October 2, 2006 at 12:26 pm
such a strong look! love the chunky and delicate necklaces combined, the bold lips, and the clear sense of personal style.

About the Margiela show, did he use “regular folk”, like he used to? According to my dad, he was infamous for many things, among other never using real models.

She is amazing.
October 2, 2006 at 2:32 pm
Impeccable and timeless. I love her necklaces. The sunglasses give her a hip eccentricity.
October 2, 2006 at 3:07 pm
She looks amazing for her age.
October 2, 2006 at 3:29 pm
She doesn’t seem to happy with having her picture taken though, haha. How was she in person?
October 2, 2006 at 4:30 pm
Lucite accessories were on the runway at Margiela. She’s so ahead of the game with the clear crystal necklace.
October 2, 2006 at 4:36 pm
I love how classic older women dress. They are a true inspiration. Queen mother.
October 2, 2006 at 5:39 pm
beyond chic — there is no word for this. it’s just beyond definition. and yes, it is very much like beppe in spirit — the safety pin — but he looks mortal, she is…beyond.
October 2, 2006 at 8:43 pm
she looks so rich!! i wish mroe women took therir cues from her—ther is nothign wrong with showing off some good breeding
October 2, 2006 at 9:21 pm
I like her hair.
The silver necklace is good. I don’t know about the way the lucite one sits on the jacket collar.
October 2, 2006 at 11:28 pm
I think it’s the glass (?) beads. Take them away and she would look like…a judge. Everything else perfectly in place and then this necklace, it’s like Hawaii in the Arctic…

I understand why people say “intimidating,” and while I don’t want to put to fine a point on this, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to say “mysterious?” I think that is what Mdme Putman is displaying here, there is softness, but also authority and a question denied anyone who asks it. The glasess make her a sphynx. She carries herself in a way that the kids today will sadly never get, and if they did, would never be able to replicate. It’s a Becall / Dietrich / Deneuve thing, and she’s carrying it like a lictor carries the imperial “faces.” She possess her sex completely, wraps it in mystery, and uses it as a weapon.
Imperatrix of her own device — The Timeless Woman.

Love the cut of her suit. Very sleek and simple.
October 3, 2006 at 12:07 pm
She’s amazing. This woman lives life by her own rules and does so gracefully. I love her work – she literally changed the way people view landscape design with the Pershing Hall Hotel vertical wall. I love it.
October 3, 2006 at 1:34 pm
The cut and fit of the suit is incredible. I love the slight bell of the sleeve. I actually think Mme. Putman’s look has softened since the 80s, when she was all about sharp edges and architectural shapes.
October 3, 2006 at 2:19 pm
She’s intimidating because something about her makes you care what she thinks of you.
October 3, 2006 at 3:08 pm
As perhaps a coda, and in response to JH, above: there IS great authority here, a sense of all-things-seen.
But the downward posture of the hands seems, to me at least, to indicate a certain repudiation of position; and it’s the tension between the two that’s so fascinating.
Too, she possesses the great power of “laide”…

Keith, it´s only rock´n´roll.
October 4, 2006 at 6:38 pm
she is so incredible!i think i’ll add this to my fridge gallery and put her right next to o’keefe in nun mode at ninety! inspirational aging!
October 4, 2006 at 10:13 pm
She’s really imposing looking. I have to object to the poor jewelry (necklace) choices.
October 5, 2006 at 6:25 pm
I know GQ gets a lot of them, but is there any way to post more pictures of men?

I had the pleasure of being invited to a dinner with about 12 people here in San Francisco, our special guest Andree Putman. She is incredible, simply incredible. She is striking, impeccably dressed, wonderful voice, smart, strong, witty, well read, well spoken, comfortable in her own skin and with her own likes (she brought a tape of Nina Simon singing in French for the restaurant to play) – honestly I could write for hours about her. THIS WOMAN IS STYLE PERSONIFIED.
