I think you should do a book featuring The Smarties and other little sartorial clubs like them around the world. Call your publisher and get on that.
November 12, 2012 at 11:37 am
I concur! I have loved seeing all your pics of the Smarties, and would definitely buy a book about them!
November 9, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I like the last picture!!!
November 9, 2012 at 4:22 pm
Are those golf shoes on the guy in the middle? That’s either an interesting pattern of wear on the soles, or those are screw in golf cleats.
November 9, 2012 at 5:39 pm
Indeed they are golf shoes, but with softspikes, not the old metal cleats which made walking on pavement slippery.
Got to love the flamboyant and charming Lino but the Smarties ?
What clever looks. I can’t get enough of them.
November 9, 2012 at 4:48 pm
love! go the fab soweto boys and the gentlemen in the photo below them.

Buon giorno, we have been waiting for you…
November 9, 2012 at 10:49 pm
The middle gent looks like a young Cuba Gooding Jr.
November 10, 2012 at 4:29 am
Love the gents! What’s the of that peculiar wooden (?) building behind The Smarties? It’d like to find more pictures of it.
November 10, 2012 at 10:03 am
The wooden structure is an old stamp mill used to crush gold. Johannesburg started as a mining town. See this link: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/21d3f1/?pageNum=10
November 10, 2012 at 10:05 am
oops it was used to crush rock.
November 10, 2012 at 5:01 am
The Smarties are doing me in. So much genuine charm, heart and style!
I had to go back and reread your comment…in order to understand that “the Smarties” ‘created their own ‘Pitti Uomo wall” in this photo, after your photos at that famous Florence wall. Kabelo and Co. simply must get to Pitti uomo….. ’13….and of course The Sartorialist luncheon with Lino and Luca and all their heroes….and a trip to Milan and Al Bazzar/FW. Nothing but the best for them!
They are the definition of Joyful Style! If there are any websites in the works where we might purchase, say some authentic “Smarties” fan club items..oh i’d love a bunch of genuine “The Smarties” of Soweto Ts. SHOUT OUT to JENNA LYONS…and MICKEY… isn’t this just the kind of brilliant colaboration you’re famous for at J Crew????!!! These guys are genius!!
November 10, 2012 at 7:37 am
Just recognized myself in the picture with Lino. My jeans look good.
November 10, 2012 at 8:43 am
Nice to see photo’s of the smarties on the Sartorialist.
I know that Americans travel to North Africa and South Africa, but what about Sub-Saharan Africa Above South Africa the large part in between?
Especially interesting are The Sapeurs today belong to ‘La SAPE’ (Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes) imortalised by the ITALIAN photographer DANIELE TAMAGNI in his fine book GENTLEMEN OF BACONGO
November 10, 2012 at 9:24 am
I believe it’s spelled Smarteez
November 10, 2012 at 10:09 am
interesting, but I don’t think the photo was taken in Soweto
November 16, 2012 at 8:43 am
No, it was taken in Jo’burg’s CBD.
November 10, 2012 at 12:24 pm
i will enjoy seeing the dinner or lunch that happens in SA. bring the Europeans over and let them see how it’s done someplace else!
November 11, 2012 at 2:26 am
Chic men are so chic.
November 11, 2012 at 11:04 am
Both pictures rock. Brilliant. I love the two tone monk shoes.
November 11, 2012 at 3:39 pm
Someone should give these guys an ad campaign.
