Great stories and pictures on The Smarties – what a find –
You’ll have to be sure to get back to South Africa to get us updates on their evolving look!
My sentiments exactly! These guys should definitely be a focus of yours in the future, as I’m sure they will quickly capture the attention of the fashion industry.
i get this warm fuzzy feeling inside when i see how the talent and fashion love that South African fashionestas possess is being so well exposed…….. #ProudSouthAfrican
I think you should do a book featuring The Smarties and other little sartorial clubs like them around the world. Call your publisher and get on that. http://lordashbury.com
Oh I love the Pitti Wall. Perhaps Kabelo and his friends will still know each other when they reach the age of the gentlemen in the picture below them.
The Smarties are definitely the highlight of your Africa trip for me. So dapper, so charming and completely working what they have. They are the essence of personal style.
Elaine, I can’t agree with you more…. They give real meaning to the term “style”. I want to invite them home to dinner and hear all about their lives And passion for fashion.
The Smarties are doing me in. So much genuine charm, heart and style!
I had to go back and reread your comment…in order to understand that “the Smarties” ‘created their own ‘Pitti Uomo wall” in this photo, after your photos at that famous Florence wall. Kabelo and Co. simply must get to Pitti uomo….. ’13….and of course The Sartorialist luncheon with Lino and Luca and all their heroes….and a trip to Milan and Al Bazzar/FW. Nothing but the best for them!
They are the definition of Joyful Style! If there are any websites in the works where we might purchase, say some authentic “Smarties” fan club items..oh i’d love a bunch of genuine “The Smarties” of Soweto Ts. SHOUT OUT to JENNA LYONS…and MICKEY… isn’t this just the kind of brilliant colaboration you’re famous for at J Crew????!!! These guys are genius!!
Nice to see photo’s of the smarties on the Sartorialist.
I know that Americans travel to North Africa and South Africa, but what about Sub-Saharan Africa Above South Africa the large part in between?
Especially interesting are The Sapeurs today belong to ‘La SAPE’ (Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes) imortalised by the ITALIAN photographer DANIELE TAMAGNI in his fine book GENTLEMEN OF BACONGO

Are those golf shoes on the guy in the middle? That’s either an interesting pattern of wear on the soles, or those are screw in golf cleats.
Monsieur Marcel
November 9, 2012 at 5:39 pm
Indeed they are golf shoes, but with softspikes, not the old metal cleats which made walking on pavement slippery.

Love the gents! What’s the of that peculiar wooden (?) building behind The Smarties? It’d like to find more pictures of it.
Edna Gee
November 10, 2012 at 10:03 am
The wooden structure is an old stamp mill used to crush gold. Johannesburg started as a mining town. See this link: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/21d3f1/?pageNum=10
