Is it just me or does everyone want to join this group of Legends? Who ever imagined that real sartorial style and fashion sense would exist in a place like Soweto? Then again; there is unique style to be found everywhere…

I hope that you’ve just posted these photos and that’s why there aren’t any comments yet, not because people have nothing to say about them! Great pictures by the way, very inspirational. It makes me think about how fashion can be the strongest mean of self expression, regardless of where you live or how much you have to spend on clothing.

The Smarties are my new heros to learn from. Already their looks are very much something to study and now you show their Clubhouse and I see they have a style that goes deeper past just their clothes into maybe everything they think and do.

    • annabella

      November 13, 2012 at 8:58 am

*sP…Totally agree, great idea. Woderful way to educate the world on a countrys’ history. through an insider’s documentary of the country’s current art and the artists that create it. In the case of SA, and especially the famous and historical township of Soweto, it would be enlightening to hear from the creative and astounding team of Smarties (Smarteez) how they came to be…and what are their motivations, inspirations aspirations as artists.designers, stylists….sartorialists.
it is clear from comments that many people would love to understand more about SA and it’s astounding rise to democracy. I love the Clubhouse, and the intensity and devotion of the 2 Smarties pictured, and like so many other commenters, and because of all the intersting posts on the walls, it feels like a chunk of the history of the dynamic new democratic SA (18 years young) is contained on the walls of the Smartie Clubhouse! So, am hoping some talented film maker will step up, and show us this story of victory through the knowing eyes of fashion and style…The Smarties! And yes, as *sP suggests, check out the Annenberg Foundations grants for art works to be done in/about Africa..google for details. Thanks Scott, *sP,,,and The Smarties! Whoever runs with this idea, please keep us posted!

The 4th & 5th images are particularly strong for me. More important than the expression of style in the previous images are “messages” on the wall. Content. Back-story. Significance.
Culture. Motivation. Compelling. Many things have been suggested related to “style over substance” however, these images seem to suggest otherwise. Thank you for posting.
