His coat is very chic.
October 25, 2012 at 2:08 pm
I think the tie is the highlight of this outfit. The shoes are also nice.

Loved the colors. Another wonderful catch, congrats.:)

I love that you’re in Jo’burg. This look is smart and stylish yet relaxed; a true jo’burger. I love the shoes.
October 25, 2012 at 2:15 pm
incredible face – classic look. love it
October 25, 2012 at 2:16 pm
For me, the woman in the background is much more interesting than this man. I’d love to see her in more detail.
October 26, 2012 at 7:17 am
The woman in the background is of Shangaan tradition. What she is wearing is called a minceka- 2 rectangular cloths tied on each side of the shoulder, then crisscrossed across the body- worn with a layered skirt underneath, which creates the bulge underneath. That skirt is called a Shibelani/Xibelani.

Such a fantastic pic!
I love everything about this photo – the man’s expression, his stance, his clothes, the background. It tells such a story.

Nice style, love the shoes!
October 25, 2012 at 3:39 pm
Camel coat, always a classic, but I’m intrigued by the lady’s outfit in the background. She is wearing fantastic colors and I would like to see her closer.
October 25, 2012 at 4:01 pm
Sartorialist in Jozi. Yes!
October 25, 2012 at 4:09 pm
funny how lots of people want to see ‘the woman in the background’. they see an african woman in a headwrap and a burden on her head and see it as more ‘exotic’ or ‘authentic’. interesting. that is why i love your shots Scott because you photograph what you see not what is perceived to be ‘typical’ of a place or people.
yep this S.A man loves him camel coat and he looks amazing in it.
October 31, 2012 at 8:01 am
So true Camille!
October 25, 2012 at 4:14 pm
The shoes are old golf shoes, it is likely that this man has worked as or is currently working as a caddy at one of the many golf courses in Johannesburg. Great Shot! Welcome to South Africa!
October 26, 2012 at 5:00 am
I’m sorry, but you have absolutely no way of being able to make that assumption – he could have bought the shoes, or assuming they are golf shoes, he could be a golf player. You have no way of assuming that he is/was a caddy.
October 25, 2012 at 4:19 pm
He somehow reminds me of Morgan Freeman!
October 25, 2012 at 4:39 pm
So awesome to see Johannesburg and SA featured on your blog. Its good to see a bit of home posted on, Love these pics. Would be awesome if you had a book signing in SA.

Wow, the woman in the background, not afraid to shine…love her shoes, also that the vibrant pink in her headscarf and wrap-sarong thing is echoing the color of his tie…

I was in the Peace Corps in Africa, and this picture makes me so nostalgic for that time in my life. I have a feeling the whole series of photos from S. Africa is going to be the same way. It’s the way his face looks like a map of his life, that’s what really takes me back there.
Thank you for helping me relive the memories. Much appreciated.
October 26, 2012 at 1:34 am
Wow! I really like his coat!
October 26, 2012 at 1:43 am

Nice shot! I love the contrast in this photo: the modest western style of the man and the vibrant colors that the lady is wearing. The expression of the man is interesting, makes me wonder what his story is.
October 26, 2012 at 3:31 am
Welcome ! Please come down to Cape Town and have a book signing.
Love the pics, seeing our hood with new eyes shows us what makes us so unique and so special.
October 26, 2012 at 5:16 am
Love this photo a lot! For those interested, the woman in the background is wearing a traditional Tsonga outfit; very commonly seen in downtown Joburg on Tsonga women, for some reason mostly on those that sell food and other things on the streets.
October 26, 2012 at 5:31 am
Wow, so much style for a man of his age! His expression looks so wise too, I love this shot.
October 26, 2012 at 6:26 am
Love the shoes and the sweater-tie combination. Distinguished gentleman
October 26, 2012 at 8:17 am

I am somehow much more interested in the woman in the background. Beautiful, bright colors and is not afraid of a little hard work.
October 28, 2012 at 4:41 am
This is amazing. SO put together! I am going to get me some saddle shoes on the back of this photo!
October 28, 2012 at 2:52 pm
It’s refreshing to see real people Scott… I love fashion but that’s what really captivated me of your site at the beginning. This images say so much about the person, the clothes talk about the person, and say great things that are not “look at me, please look at me”. It ca be a bit tireing to see such eagerness for something ephimerous. That’s not what fashion is about, to me anyway… Again, some fresh air. Thanks
October 29, 2012 at 2:47 am
Aha – Scott in Jozi – welcome!!!
October 29, 2012 at 6:29 am
Is it just me or is SA on the come up?
October 29, 2012 at 8:38 am
This is one of the best photos of the year. There is a depth to this guy that I rarely see in many of the over-dressed youngsters photographed in the parks of NYC and Paris, and the streets of Milan and London. I love seeing people with a sense of personal style, and I think that style is something that older people have that the 40-and-under set try, unsuccessfully, to buy.
October 29, 2012 at 5:26 pm
I´m not sure what i like more…the man in the front or the woman at the back…
October 30, 2012 at 11:31 am
You’re showing that there is beauty everywhere, we just need to slow down to see it. Thank you for sharing this photo! I LOVE simple elegance he exudes. You can tell there are lots of stories underneath!
