Agreed – The top right corner I love the most – those Chloe shoes are amazing!
October 15, 2012 at 4:04 pm
Love this idea!
AWW i love to wear shoes like these actually! Great post :)
October 15, 2012 at 4:05 pm
What a great idea! This a blogger/stylist/shop owner/cool girl’s dream come true! And I very much like the idea of putting together photos from both men and women, as both inspire me equally. Love the heeled mocassins.

I am thinking about wide leg trousers!!
October 15, 2012 at 4:23 pm
way ahead of you! i’ve got a folder for wide leg trousers, flared jeans, baggy jeans etc
October 15, 2012 at 5:13 pm
Squeeeee ! That’s me screeching with joy. I love, love, love this idea. I look forward to it. By the way, I am thinking of navy blue dresses.
October 16, 2012 at 1:03 pm
Yes! Navy dresses can be tricky.
October 16, 2012 at 3:05 pm
I am excited for this one to say the least! I was just thinking about bringing out my flared jeans this fall…..can’t wait!
October 15, 2012 at 5:12 pm
Me too ! I have a few wide leg trousers in white, pink, and denim and I am eager to see how others are putting their look together.
October 15, 2012 at 4:08 pm
I love this idea, I’m looking forward to more.
October 15, 2012 at 4:09 pm
I like the idea as it is much easier to compare stuff people wear when you have more images on one page. I did once the opposite “white socks” as it was the most stricking for me in this outfit. Madrid Street Style http://madrilicious.com
October 15, 2012 at 4:10 pm
good idea! :)
I always read your site (every day for a year now) but this is the first time I am inspired to comment. This is a brilliant idea. Nothing compares to seeing real clothes on real people styled in fashionable and interesting ways. This feature is the real font of inspiration for regular, not-fashion-literate people like me who follow fashion and have an idea they would like to try, yet need guidance through example to see how to make it work. Thank you for creating this new feature!
October 15, 2012 at 4:49 pm
Amen to that! Love, love, love your idea Scott.
October 15, 2012 at 7:06 pm
Same here! I love this idea! I also use blogs to inspire my outfits. It’s so funny that the first compilation is this one, as one of my go to shoe options are black lacy socks and black oxfords. They go with almost everything!
So it’s more of an inspirational feature, then a trend.
October 15, 2012 at 4:11 pm
Love it already!
October 15, 2012 at 4:14 pm
I’m thinking about…;) that’s a great idea;)
October 15, 2012 at 4:20 pm
I love the idea :) Good luck and have fun! <3
October 15, 2012 at 4:21 pm
Love the idea! The concepts are great … “On the Street” is just brilliant!

October 15, 2012 at 4:22 pm
i love your new idea. i also hope you’ll add your own thoughts.
black sock with black shoes clearly depends on the shoes. the shoes on the top/middle are a fail. love the top left and bottom middle. they blend the right way. makes you rethink skirts, which i love – need more of!
October 16, 2012 at 8:21 am
such a shame how people always seem to feel the need to pass their judgement on things. how can you say the top/middle outfit is a fail? it may not be to your taste, but that definitely doesn’t make it a fail. the variety in which this ‘trend’ is showcased here, isn’t that what fashion is all about? different people executing the black sock idea in different ways, trying out new things and just having fun with it all? in my opinion, when in comes to fashion, things start to get interesting when you let creativity flow. and then you don’t always come up with outfits that are ‘pretty’ per se, but does it always have to be? I think that would just put limitations to creativity.
on topic, Scott, I love this new idea. can’t wait to see more of it!
October 15, 2012 at 4:33 pm
I am wearing ankle booties with socks right now haha
October 15, 2012 at 4:34 pm
Shoes n’ Sock – love it!
February 2, 2013 at 1:40 pm
In my country for the last 50 years socks with sandlas/boots has been wearing only by a simple girls or old women from the country side…It was never a sign of creativity or extraordinary imagination in fashion, it was simply… very bad taste. But maybe all of them were ahead of their time in fashion ;-) Isn’t it ironic that the same thing in the small village in East Europe it’s a commonness and bad taste and on the street in NY it’s brilliant fashion trend… dont’ you thing?
October 15, 2012 at 4:35 pm
fantastic idea! i’m looking forward, and i’m going to wear black socks with black shoes to work today…
October 15, 2012 at 4:38 pm
Very nice idea, love it!!

October 15, 2012 at 4:40 pm
Really looking forward to these posts :)
October 15, 2012 at 4:41 pm
Excellent idea Scott!!! Will be looking forward to these posts :D
Kisses from Argentina!!
October 15, 2012 at 4:43 pm
If the looks you’re putting together don’t show a current trend so I think that they’ll become after you publish them.
Congrats on your new feature.
Ahh by the way, I just received today my Net-a-Porter prints from “The Sartorialist: Closer”. I bought “the unstoppable Anna” (Milan), Joanna Hillman (NY) and the one with the girl in black suit (Paris) and they look so cool together. It really changed my living room! I LOVE it!
October 15, 2012 at 4:44 pm
I like the idea! Looking forward to seeing more of “If You’re Thinking About…” :)
October 15, 2012 at 4:45 pm
This is a really fresh and creative addition to your already fantastic website.
October 16, 2012 at 11:31 am
You said it–yet another reason to visit Sartorialist. Hoping this feature can be sustained season in and season out.
October 15, 2012 at 4:46 pm
I love Black socks!!
October 15, 2012 at 4:47 pm
I’m especially looking forward to any posts you may have on menswear. I notice lately you’ve been shooting a lot of men in suits. I don’t know if this is Fashion Week-centric, but I’m always bemused of how few avenues we have concerning creative (but strong) options for men that aren’t blazers/ties/bowties. So, I leave it to you to not forget about the creatively casual man!
October 15, 2012 at 4:48 pm
I love this blog every day a little bit more.
I follow you daily and I admire your talent. I really like this new initiative! It can help any “fashion absolute beginner” like me to find their own style.
October 15, 2012 at 4:51 pm
These are going to be great! Can’t wait! This is why I love Pinterest. I’m always going to my My Style board and putting together one of those looks from my own closet and it helps me when shopping to look for specific items rather than fumbling around in the store and buying something I don’t really want or need.
October 15, 2012 at 4:52 pm
I’ll be very interested on “leggings shoots”. I guess you have seen fireworks on this special kind of socks? pants? really still don’t know how to define them.
October 15, 2012 at 4:55 pm
What a great idea, Scott! Like it or not, by your curation you will be a trend maker!
October 15, 2012 at 4:57 pm
This is a great initiative and I will certainly benefit from this!
October 15, 2012 at 5:02 pm
Fantastic idea, thank you.
October 15, 2012 at 5:05 pm
I love the idea of black socks with black shoes! My kind of style.

October 15, 2012 at 5:19 pm
What a fantastic idea! It will serve as great inspiration to see these groupings of images. Love it! Thank you!
Wonderful idea, can not wait to see what is to come!
October 15, 2012 at 5:25 pm
that first look has got it going ‘AWN!
October 15, 2012 at 5:32 pm
Thanks! Love it.
October 15, 2012 at 5:35 pm
The magic about the trends is that sometimes is not about trendsetters and people following, is about the zeitgeist. How a phenomenon occurs at the same time in a lot of minds, no matter if you identified the object before. In fashion is a common thing to wake up in the morning feeling like wearing a pair of black socks with black shoes and thinking you are gonna be the first. But no. Some people out there is using the same things because at the zeitgeist, such a beautiful thing.
I agree with this idea!I agree with everything that gives us the ability to make comparisons….
October 15, 2012 at 5:46 pm
While I actually think that black socks, black shoes and bare legs is a horrible idea, the idea of “If you’re thinking about…” is a fabulous one! And it’s one that we will enjoy even if the theme isn’t one we would ever actually contemplate doing. Still nice to see a collection of photos grouped thematically, and done so through your eyes. Great idea!
Love this idea! Will you do seasonal looks for those of us opposite your northern seasons?
October 15, 2012 at 5:50 pm
October 15, 2012 at 5:51 pm
I definetely think I need some socks for showing, cause I can see it is a trend, I see it on your pics, on the magazines… and I like it!
October 15, 2012 at 5:59 pm
Cool! I’m excited to see more of the patterns you’re seeing, Scott!

October 15, 2012 at 6:02 pm
Love this idea and I love the black socks and shoes…except for the doc martens. I think once you’ve been there, you shouldn’t go back. But maybe that’s just because they were sooooooo overdone in highschool.
October 15, 2012 at 6:06 pm
great idea!really looking forward to what you’ll put together!already your blog has helped me to understand style and i love it so much…(selfish request:if appropriate could you please have comments as to what type of figure a certain style would suit or just generally more comments with your observations? i always find them so helpful and interesting…)
October 15, 2012 at 6:15 pm
Love this idea! Can’t wait to see future posts.
October 15, 2012 at 6:36 pm
This is a great idea! And so simple I can’t believe it hasn’t been done before. Thanks Mr Schuman!
October 15, 2012 at 6:38 pm
I think, at my age, I would look less stylish and more frumpy if I started wearing black socks and shoes with my skirts.
October 15, 2012 at 6:39 pm
As for the “sock” look, I just can’t do it… In the past years, socks have been making a major comeback with pumps, strappy shoes, ballerinas, etc. Except on some very very rare occasions and on girls with exceptionally gorgeous legs, I find socks worn with anything other than pants (and covered by said pants) are the most unsexiest thing ever. Very often, seeing a woman’s ankle adds a touch of feminity to the look. Why hide it under hideous sock?
I suppose I’m the “arch-example”. I rarely wear socks, and when I do, they’re hidden and discreet. Even in the dead of winter, I’ll be wearing my ballerinas and pumps without socks.
I just don’t get this trend. The only persons on whom socks can look good with girly shoes are… well… little girls.

October 15, 2012 at 6:42 pm
Great idea! I use your photos as references/inspiration this’ll be super helpful :)
October 15, 2012 at 7:08 pm
I, too, love this idea. It’s going to be so much fun especially when I find “new” ideas repeating what I’ve worn as a young woman like the loafers and socks for example.
I adore Garance’s style on the last photo.
October 15, 2012 at 7:09 pm
Love black socks and black shoes!
October 15, 2012 at 7:10 pm
sometimes a shoe just needs a sock…
Great idea! So excited to see how it works out.
October 15, 2012 at 7:18 pm
LOVE this idea! How cool! Can’t wait to see what new “trends” you put together and how the feature evolves.
October 15, 2012 at 7:23 pm
Another great use for your pictures! Cant wait to see the mens ones!
October 15, 2012 at 7:25 pm
Black booties… my favorite purchase of the season.
Still in search of semi-comfortable black pumps…
October 15, 2012 at 7:35 pm
Excellent idea to do these posts… Am thinking about veiled hats, turbans on men and women, beanies, caps etc!
October 15, 2012 at 7:37 pm
Sounds like it will be a great styling guide!
love how this old school peeping socks is still popular!
October 15, 2012 at 7:39 pm
Great styling guide!
October 15, 2012 at 8:05 pm
What a fabulous idea! I love your photos and a little bit of editorializing is much welcomed!
October 15, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Thank you…again! Love to see your photos on street style, but now this will pull different images together focused on particular clothing item(s), and with what I assume will be different stylings. Fantastic!

This is so awesome! I’m glad you’ve started this.
October 15, 2012 at 9:16 pm
Love this Idea!!!
October 15, 2012 at 9:24 pm
Great idea, but don’t limit it to just the last year.
If someone was wearing black shoes and socks in 2007 and you photographed it, I’d live to see that mixed in with more recent images.
October 15, 2012 at 9:54 pm
Brilliant idea! Love these girls with great legs even in great black shoes and socks. Where’s Garance……..
October 16, 2012 at 11:34 am
Isn’t that Garance lower right?
October 15, 2012 at 10:03 pm
“If you’re thinking about,” is a great idea and I look forward to more. I love socks and shoes, socks and boots…but if you’re thinking about socks and sandals just…don’t.
October 15, 2012 at 10:11 pm
I just started wearing socks with shoes this season. Something I have wanted to do for quite sometime but wasn’t sure I could pull off. I remember looking at that picture of Garance when you first posted it. I referenced it on my blog and whined a bit about my lack of self confidence. It took a while but I finally did it-thanks to you and Garance for the inspiration!
October 15, 2012 at 10:25 pm
Brilliant!!!! You really are the most creative person doing this.
October 15, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Looking forward to this new feature!
As most people in Melbourne I love black on black combination! will definitely give this one a go. Looking forward to more inspirational posts! http://stylebymerlin.blogspot.com.au/

October 16, 2012 at 12:35 am
Black socks, black shoes? I totally dig it. Although I might have a little problem with trying to not make it seem like I’m cutting off a certain part of my legs! But, the whole idea of pairing this with a dress or a skirt is would be very edgy and hip.
October 16, 2012 at 12:54 am
Love it. Not least because we’ll only be thinking about it if you are (if you see what I mean) and I’ll be intrigued to see where that goes!
October 16, 2012 at 12:55 am
Isn’t this akin to Bill Cunningham’s “On the Street”?
October 16, 2012 at 4:24 pm
That’s exactly what I was thinking! I love this blog, but worry about mimicking Mr. Cunningham’s articles.
October 16, 2012 at 1:12 am
Anyone here ever hear of bill cunningham?
October 17, 2012 at 11:11 am
exactly! but cunningham mostly put these compilations in the context of trend whereas these are more style guides. not to dis bill…love him! i guess this is a more searchable base for style and glad scott is pursuing it
October 16, 2012 at 1:29 am
Great idea, Scott.
It takes a keen eye like yours to be able to spot these — what I think we can safely call — “the beginning of a trend”.
October 16, 2012 at 1:35 am
I always enjoy your postings because its mixed with street style and runway! love the post
October 16, 2012 at 1:40 am
I always enjoy your post because its mixed with street style and runway. Love your post!
October 16, 2012 at 1:52 am
I believe it’s a good idea and I like the way it’s realised this first time, but I can’t stop wondering: if people look at fashion blog to find the inspiration soon they will all wear the same way!
October 16, 2012 at 2:26 am
I love this! I love The Sartorialist because it is a very real and accessible way of being inspired by real people as well as the runway about fashion. I also love that you acknowledge that I am not the only person who uses this blog when I don’t know what to wear!

October 16, 2012 at 3:53 am
Lovely idea; rather like Bill Cunningham? and why not?
October 16, 2012 at 4:14 am
Perfect! Was thinking about something like that a while ago. Very much looking forward to that!

October 16, 2012 at 4:15 am
Thanks for creating this set of pictures anyway. But at this time of day, I’m already dressed and I would not consider changing for black socks. I’ll probably get the inspiration from a future set !
October 16, 2012 at 4:20 am
the idea of introducing an event like this in a blog is without a doubt very good …
with regard to post my opinion is this:
socks, any color, I’m not totally against women because they distort their femininity. the legs and feet of women, instruments of incomparable elegance, class and seduction, should always be shown. I love women who wear high heels, pantyhose and stockings …
everything else is boring …
October 16, 2012 at 4:21 am
Like this shock ! :)
October 16, 2012 at 4:27 am
Such a great idea! Can’t wait to see more posts like this.

Brilliant. Just what we needed! Thank you!
October 16, 2012 at 5:06 am
living in a small town it is an inspiring moment to watch the streetstyle blogs.
When i am fascinated by a look i go to ebay
searching for prints or colors or materials to make the look my own!
October 16, 2012 at 5:09 am
Great idea ! Thank you!
October 16, 2012 at 5:16 am
I love the idea because the image you will add are unique! The concept is something we all do in our blogs one way or another but it is your photographs that will make all the difference! Can’t wait!

since vreeland is an idol, i think it´s brilliant to let her “why don´t you…” be pictuarized on the net – THANKS!

October 16, 2012 at 5:47 am
Difficult trend for women over 40 but funny for younger people :-)
Or better, it’ s only for creative people!
October 16, 2012 at 6:05 am
Love the idea!!! Thank you.
October 16, 2012 at 6:13 am
Great idea! As I live in the southern hemisphere I’m usually checking out old posts that show MY current season for inspiration. This new feature will surely be useful for me. Thanks!
October 16, 2012 at 6:14 am
I love this look with shoes boots and sandals. Non frilly socks the same colour as your footwear. Works for me! Look at the tabio website for a great choice. Sparkly to lace and everything inbetween. Be brave… Think Consuelo Casteglioni and go for it!
October 16, 2012 at 7:36 am
great idea! can’t wait to see more :)

October 16, 2012 at 9:21 am
i am definitely looking forward to this segment!and i love the black socks ans shoes idea..i would love to own these awesome shoes though as well..and have you spotted neon socks much?i am really craving that this fall..maybe subconsciously i registered it on some other bloggers only.
I think I only actually like the two on the right.. the others just seem too dowdy for me. Oh well! I prefer the thin socks with heels we’ve been seeing lately..
October 16, 2012 at 9:40 am
Thank YOU!!!! :)
I like so much the idea!
October 16, 2012 at 9:41 am
I love this! And now i must go buy some black socks to wear with my new patent black loafers.
October 16, 2012 at 10:20 am

Thanks for the thoughtful bite-size support.
October 16, 2012 at 10:59 am
Looking forward to these posts, always in need of inspiration and I´m not getting it from the glossies anymore – I put on black socks and brogues this morning :)
October 16, 2012 at 11:09 am
-only if the images would be accessible seperately… Perhaps including the pictures with their links as a mean to enlarge them can be an idea??
October 16, 2012 at 11:14 am
There’s surely never too much inspiration out there, and gathering ideas under a theme could give a whole new dimension to you photos as well.
October 16, 2012 at 11:37 am
Love the idea!! And waiting to seeeeee more!!!
October 16, 2012 at 12:37 pm
You are great…and I can’s wait to see you in Los Angeles. Last time you were here, I was in Paris, but still managed a signed copy of the first book!!
October 16, 2012 at 12:55 pm
I absolutely love this idea and have been playing with it on my own blog’s section of street style. Just saw that you will be coming to Miami for your book signing and can’t wait!!!!!

This is what Bill Cunningham does for the NY Times
October 16, 2012 at 4:55 pm
I love this! Great idea to pool all of the photos on the same theme. I get lots of inspirations from men aswell as women.
Looking forward to seeing more of it in the near future
October 16, 2012 at 5:37 pm
I’m thinking of patchwork! Classy patchwork.
October 16, 2012 at 8:48 pm

October 17, 2012 at 9:28 pm
This is a brilliant idea. Could you do one on tattoos? I know they aren’t clothing but I’d love to see all the images you have of tattooed people.
October 18, 2012 at 12:17 pm
This new feature reminds of Bill Cunningham’s “On the Street” section for NY Times. Always interesting to see the ways in which people interpret and style one particular look in such diverse ways.
October 18, 2012 at 4:17 pm
Love it. And so glad to see you posting again.
October 18, 2012 at 10:31 pm
Oh I just am gong to be Even more addicted to your blog, Scott! My mornings Are like a grown womans version of “dress up’s” before I head out to face the day, and This new feature will be a great aid in helping me to remember all that I have in my vast wardrobe! Now where did I hide those short, black ankle socks???
October 20, 2012 at 2:24 pm
I really like this! I’ve enjoyed all of them so far, but like this first one best (probably because I’d never wear denim on denim, look terrible in short hair, and don’t like white). I’m learning a lot from seeing the variations on a theme–thanks and please keep it up!
October 20, 2012 at 5:03 pm

it is the Inspiration of the Idea.. that comes across in such beauty… in your photographs I see a way of fashion, a way of waking to the feeling of wonder that a blog can open my eyes to the chic glamour! Thank you Scott, thank you!! merci!

Isn’t it funny how fashion recycles itself?
I used to wear black socks and shoes with cut-off denim shorts back in the early 90′s!

I’m a boy and I like brown mocassins, black ankle socks with shorts in the summer, but that’s already more popular and common place among us boys.
But I love how these girls pulled off the looks, I think at it like an anklet or a little ankle boots, very flattering.
