This is both a wonderful and very difficult textile to wear, since because of the thikness, not everybody can pull it through.
It looks gorgeous on her, though, the colours are fabulous.
Autumn has arrived….
With a good body and the right attitude you really can pull of a look, that outfit could do serious damage on another figure type, blimy, not a colour palette I’d see on many Londoners.
These clothes are from London designer J.W. Anderson’s new collection for TopShop. I have this top too and, just like someone commented previously, it is a very tricky shape/texture to pull off. Hence, it has only been hanging in my closet since I bought it! I do like a boxy shape when worn with a slimmer bottom but this top also has very thick quilting so I am scared to look like Spongebob Squarepants! I am skinny like the girl in the picture but not very tall. What do you think, should I dare to use it? You can even see from the picture that she is actually holding the top in with her hand and elbow. Looks gorgeous in this image but did it look nice in real life from another angle?
Go for it! Proportional shifts are great to play with and I think J W Anderson gets how to make “wrong” look “right”. I don’t think it’ll look SpongeBob ( even though how I get that that might not be a look that one would want to go for, I still can’t ignore the voice in my head that says…Awesome…). Nevertheless, a slim pencil skirt/ boxy top ensemble is a great, fresh look. Plus, you can mix these pieces in as separates, layer the top, etc. Speaking of that, I’ve gotta get myself down to Topshop here in NYC…wonder if there are any pieces left from this collection.
Thanks for your reply Cheryl :) You know, I still haven’t used the top but somehow I can’t get rid off it either so I’m sure I will at some point. I totally see what your saying about a slim pencil skirt/boxy top combo and as the picture proves, it can be a winning combination. However, pencil skirts are the one item I’m never comfortable wearing. I just honestly don’t think it’s a good look for someone quite short, like myself. While I’m all for playing with shapes and not caring so much about ‘style rules’, it’s always easy for stylists/editors/designers to advocate this and make it work on a super tall, super skinny model. After all, the people who I tend to find the most attractive in real life are those who “dress right for their figure” as boring as it may sound…
As for the JW Anderson collection: I could be mistaken but I don’t think this ever came out in NYC. I think it was a London exclusive.
..I’ve got the skirt in the black and amber…not that difficult to wear..it is silk ,after all, & the quilting is not very thick. perfect for a London winter..very like the quilted bustle in the V&A…..think this fabric was popular in the uncentrally heated 19thc…..
It is a great collection & love the way it’s put together in the Topshop publicity shoot….
I’ve never seen a quilted outfit before (the fabric looks stiff).
I wouldn’t wear it myself but the top with skinny jeans and high heel booties might work on a tall woman.
Gorgeous photo, I just love all the colours! Her red hair brings out the red in the paisley print so well and I love how she has let the skirt and top do the talking by keeping the accessories minimal.
Big fan of your blog, Scott, keep up the great work!
These pieces in themselves are somewhat OTT, but she manages to pull it off in a way that is simple and chic. Fantastic.
Also, her hair colour is fantastic!
Love the fabric on this dress looks like a stylish quilt. Also the pattern is super playful. We are big fans of the strappy sandal style pump. Michael Kors makes a similar heel called the Gideon Platform Sandal in black patent. The heel is skinner and the straps crisscross.
