Try Andre -3.
I’m just not with this one. Less than the sum of its parts.
November 20, 2006 at 9:02 pm
There is so much that I don’t like about this look.
I could go on and on.
Instead, I will just say what I do like which is how he is wearing his tie on the outside of his sweater instead of on the inside.
I also like his hat.
November 20, 2006 at 9:04 pm
fantastic . . . . . .stylish, unique, and individual . . . .
November 20, 2006 at 9:34 pm
Wow, he actually incorporated something fromt he costume store.

ROTFL! Every post is going to mirror anon @ 8:41 pm.
Three shirts and a tie with nothing really matching (loving the jacket though) and me wondering what he’s hiding behind his back.
He’s hyper cute though and I’d compliment him on the get up if I saw him on the street. He’s obviously polished (see grooming details), so it’s not like he just threw that on.
November 20, 2006 at 10:03 pm
Honestly, the thing that makes me love this outfit the most isn’t the styling or the accessories but the burst of green under all of it.
November 20, 2006 at 10:15 pm
loooooove it. don’t really like the head gear going on but that jacket and the green sweater are smashing.
November 20, 2006 at 10:30 pm
HA!!! Now that’s swagger folks. I’m going in the bathroom right now to practice my snarl.
I would’ve never paired that jacket with that sweater, but that’s what it’s about. Someone showing us the possibilities.
November 20, 2006 at 10:31 pm
I love his expression, it conveys the same irreverent and quirky charm as his ensemble.
November 20, 2006 at 10:47 pm
actually, he’s trying to pull off a Pharrell…but without the high-end accoutrements.
Another example of Hip Hop at its original best (though many erroneously think Hip Hop is about baggy pants and fitted baseball caps).

November 20, 2006 at 11:04 pm
Someone already said Andre 3000, but then I thought, it’s been years since I’ve seen him in jeans….
Seems more Ralph Lauren Holiday.
November 20, 2006 at 11:18 pm
OK, this guy has style, flair and originality – so much more than Richard Chai and friends (I really didn’t get that picture). Mr. Insouciance. Love the green with the little pop of light blue at the neck. Love him.
November 20, 2006 at 11:37 pm
Somewhere Jean-Michel Basquiat is smiling…

Fantastic,confident, in-your-face attitude!!!
November 21, 2006 at 12:23 am
cool look, but the gold buttons are distracting.
November 21, 2006 at 12:55 am
Quite funky fresh. I love it.
November 21, 2006 at 1:17 am
Oh that rocks! Never mind all the charisma coming through, the outfit on its ownn is quite brilliant. That green cashmere (at least it would be best if it was) sweater, the little blue t-shirt showing underneath that. This guy is really rocking this outfit and of course that jacket and hat! Really good pieces there on their own, that form a great whole. If only he hadn’t worn that tie, makes him look he’s trying too hard, and he really doesn’t need to, the clothes would carry him just fine.

November 21, 2006 at 3:33 am
My sister and I were shopping next to him Sunday night at the new UniQlo on Broadway. He was wearing both the hat and jacket then and we loved it!
November 21, 2006 at 4:15 am
His expression is priceless! And his outfit is so funky.
I love it.
November 21, 2006 at 4:18 am
yes definetly dre, but its so mimicked down to the pose that its more like he’s dressing up and trying to be exactly like Andre 3000 than having his own style that incorperates his and 3000′s together. More like a late costume than personal style to me…P.S. love this blog!! im away at school upstate, one of the many ways i keep in contact with my city. LOVE IT!!!
November 21, 2006 at 4:24 am
That’s fantastic — without the jacket, it would merely be casual preppy (although the colours are great, and the tie over the jumper is stylish in itself); with the jacket, it adds a kind of military/brass band vibe, and the hat (plus the attitude) adds nonchalance and devil-may-care to the whole thing. I love it!
November 21, 2006 at 4:43 am
he looks like captain jack,, hot
November 21, 2006 at 4:45 am
November 21, 2006 at 4:48 am
my heart just stopped…and he doesn’t resemble andre 3k at all.
i like…i like..
November 21, 2006 at 5:15 am
It kinda works, actually.
November 21, 2006 at 5:16 am
Wow, I just love this look. The green colour is fantastic undet the jacket.
November 21, 2006 at 6:38 am
This jacket is amazing. Cannot say the same about the hat though…
November 21, 2006 at 6:46 am
I like the mix of colours – blue, green and the golden buttons.
November 21, 2006 at 6:47 am
November 21, 2006 at 6:48 am
I like the mix of colours – navy blue, green and the golden buttons.
November 21, 2006 at 7:08 am
i love his jacket!!!
November 21, 2006 at 7:50 am
Hmmm…I’m just not a fan of military, marching band or scouting apparel of any kind in everyday wear.
November 21, 2006 at 7:53 am
This has a through-the-looking-glass quality; now it seems to have been plotted, now it seems to have been…well, not.
But somehow it all works. The hat is REALLY pushing it, though….
November 21, 2006 at 8:05 am
No actually it’s me!
November 21, 2006 at 8:19 am
Gorgeous! The aqua/lime/navy combination does it for me. It’s a beautiful use of color contrasts — particularly the red piping playfulness picked back up in the tie.
November 21, 2006 at 9:11 am
he looks fab
November 21, 2006 at 9:31 am
Love the Sgt.Peppers jacket with Aviator hat and Preppy schoolboy sweater tie combo. Only in NY! Love!
November 21, 2006 at 10:17 am
I like all but the hat. It is not the wrong hat..it is the wrong size, or material for those other pieces. Maybe for a more futuristic assemble it would work better: a monocromatic skinny futuristic combo.
November 21, 2006 at 10:24 am
Handsome with a sense of humour. Nice combo.
November 21, 2006 at 10:27 am
what is the point of this?…it is just stupid looking.
November 21, 2006 at 10:33 am
Wow – what a dude. He has put so much effort into this ensemble! I love all the completely different elements – the military-esque coat, the school boy tie, the green of the jumper. It looks fantastic together!
November 21, 2006 at 10:40 am
There’s just something so…right…about this.
November 21, 2006 at 10:41 am
NEED one of those jackets.
November 21, 2006 at 10:56 am
So. Much. Fun. This guy just makes me smile. Never mind that he looks great, and looks like he feels great – and isn’t that what it’s all about?
November 21, 2006 at 11:26 am
what not to like? i love the fact that he wears those boring pete doherty pieces in a totally hip hop way. brilliant!
November 21, 2006 at 11:37 am
i really like that this guy pulls off this uniform jacket thing that was so huge in this years winter collections of some mainstream italian designers (you know them, i wont name them).
he just does it right. really fits.
not that over-the-top-attitude but a lot of irony going on in this ensemble… congratulations…
(even though it’s not at all my way of clothing)
November 21, 2006 at 11:51 am
He looks great, not everyone would pull this off.
November 21, 2006 at 12:08 pm
trying too hard
November 21, 2006 at 12:15 pm
Wow there is alot going on here….I don’t even know where to begin.
November 21, 2006 at 12:20 pm
Somewhere their is a Salvation A rmy person ringing his bell ,freezing in the cold, without his jacklet.
November 21, 2006 at 1:17 pm
Love the marine coat but i think the tie-without-shirt-collar look is utterly ridiculous, even on the coolest of rockstars. a scarf or a bandana works better.
November 21, 2006 at 1:29 pm
I think this looks so cool — love the civil war meets Andre 3K / Kanye mashup style. But sweet mary for the love of god I hope after snapping this you advised the gentleman to tuck the tie under the sweater! hello?
November 21, 2006 at 1:38 pm
nicest pic ever on this site!!
November 21, 2006 at 2:01 pm
Oh wow! Can you see that little peek of blue out from under his collar? It makes the entire outfit so much more interesting!!!!
November 21, 2006 at 2:33 pm
His stance makes me think of Basquiat by way of Jeffrey Wright. And that just charms me.
November 21, 2006 at 2:39 pm
Very interesting-looking young man.Very cute.
November 21, 2006 at 2:47 pm
brave it is. but i find it over worked and over embelished. it is more fashion over style.
November 21, 2006 at 3:03 pm
Last time I checked this country was at war and young Marines were fighting and dying overseas. A Marine’s dress blue uniform is only appropriately worn by a United States Marine. If you haven’t earned title Marine, take the jacket off.
November 21, 2006 at 4:10 pm
November 21, 2006 at 4:44 pm
OMG…I said the SAME thing. Very Andre 300
November 21, 2006 at 5:04 pm
He’s a gorgeous guy but the headgear is a little too much with the jacket. Perhaps especially because he’s a gorgeous guy.
Just an Observation
November 21, 2006 at 5:42 pm
“costume store” ” don’t know exactly” ” nothing matching”…all and so much more could be said….. I would like to ask this individual what exactly is going through his head when he was putting these clothes on ……Playing dress up perhaps ….I’ve done that …Guilty as charged ….but I do not walk out the door. It’s important to have a little of everything otherwise we would all be living in BEIGELANDTHANKS!!!
November 21, 2006 at 6:14 pm
I am sure that Gunny Sgt Hartman would like to have this dude back at MCB Camp Lejune for some recycle time.
November 21, 2006 at 6:22 pm
To anon 3:03:
Semper Fi. MCB Q is my next door neighbor.
November 22, 2006 at 1:10 am
He’s working it. Gorgeous.
November 22, 2006 at 3:59 am
Sad to see all the references are race based: Jean Michel, Andre, Pharrel??? “Duhh…you’re Black so you look like (fill in the blank with the name of some Black pop culture reference) Wake up!!!!!! Free your mind and your ass will follow (and maybe your sense of style)!
November 22, 2006 at 11:01 am
I think he looks really Hendrix-esque (attitude, jacket) and that I love!don’t really see Andre3000…or Basquiat a la the movie…either way, though I love it, love the layers, the green sweater, the tie with the sweater and especially the jacket and attitude!
November 22, 2006 at 11:07 am
Humor, fun, alive!I adore the jacket embracing the green, that’s color movement! The tie look, lovely. Seems to be the ironic part… then is perfect! The hat, brr, wish I’ve one like that, but here the heat is perennial.Love this space, reminds me I’m still human in a material way!;)
November 22, 2006 at 3:46 pm
it’s a nice jacket–very rockstar, a good find.
November 23, 2006 at 1:29 am
I’ve a good deal of jarhead friends who’d probably sock him in the jaw about that dress coat.
I just don’t get the whole military-esque (or, here, simply wearing the real thing) thing in fashion.
November 23, 2006 at 10:40 am
anon 1:17 p.m. – he *is* wearing a collared shirt. if you look closely you can see the shirt lapels.
i think he looks awesome, but i do have to agree with 3:03 p.m. perhaps a “military-inspired” coat would have been a better option.
November 24, 2006 at 2:32 pm
Dressing up like someone who has style doesn’t necessarily mean you HAVE style….
November 26, 2006 at 6:57 pm
I’ve spotted him also on the subway going home. I think it’s safe tosay that this is his signature. I love it with a passion. I’ve been tempted to ask him if I could take a picture of him especially to see the different variations he comes up with.
November 26, 2006 at 10:02 pm
Only someone who has EARNED the right to wear that jacket looks good in it. This guy is missing one thing, the pride that comes with earning it. I agree, there are men in Iraq dying right now who earned that eagle, globe and anchor who will never wear that jacket again and this guy is wearing it as a fashion accessory! As a Marine myself, it does make me angry to see it worn in a disrespectful manner!
stacy (la, ca)
November 29, 2006 at 1:27 am
Great look and attitude. And interesting criticism by those who think he hasn’t earned the right to wear the jacket of a U.S. Marine.
1. Maybe he *was* a Marine, and did earn the right to wear it. Are there no disaffected Marines, especially now?
2. No one should ever be assaulted for the clothes they wear. Everyone, including Marines, should learn some tolerance.
3. Surplus stores sell these jackets to the general public. Here’s an example. *He’s* general public. He can’t buy it?
November 30, 2006 at 4:50 pm
a cutie, but just a bit too much. would be nice to delete one accessory — either the tie or the hat.
also, it’s curious that the young man of color is repeatedly compared to famous hip hop artists. i see little connection to andre 3k or pharrell beyond race and skin. the basquiat reference makes sense, though.
December 1, 2006 at 12:47 pm
Style is important, yes, but so too is respect. That’s not a marching band uniform he has on…that’s the jacket from a dress blues uniform of our United States Marine Corps. The men who wear that jacket earned it by pledging to defend our freedom, at all costs, so that we may host fashion blogs and walk the streets of that fabulous city. Unless that jacket belonged to his father, grandfather, or uncle and he’s wearing it out of reverrance…I find it a bit disrespectful.
December 4, 2006 at 12:20 pm
As a former Naval officer, I understand the Marines’ point of view with regards to respecting the uniform, but military clothing (especially vintage) has always made its way into civilian style. Khakis, bomber jackets, peacoats, diver watches, aviator sunglasses and cargo pants (just to name a few) have become regular staples of modern clothing. I would argue it’s the issue and reissue of all these classics that in some sense keeps the military relevant to the average civilian who hasn’t had the honor and priveledge of serving in hte armed forces. As for this man’s look specifically, it’s great to see him come up with something interesting and judging by the number of posts, worthy of conversation. Well played, sir!
December 20, 2006 at 5:01 pm
Wow, how many (well dressed!) current/former officers read this blog?
I don’t much care for the look, independent of the perceived disrespect. Too flashy. As for the jacket, it’s a current issue dress uniform, not vintage or a costume store item.
February 5, 2007 at 3:18 am
Love his expression and that’s about it.
May 6, 2008 at 11:56 am
I love this! The green sweater with the light blue underneath – great color combo & the jacket is so unusual. Hat is a little crazy – but hey – go for it!
January 16, 2012 at 4:15 pm
i would just say tuck in the tie. wearing it on the outside all too easily gives away that it goes with the piping on the dress coat. don’t be so eager to make sure that they know everything up front. let em work a little. besides, those who are looking will see and the big smile and/or AHHHAAA! you’ll get might seem even sweeter.
