Funny how a pretty woman will look pretty wearing everything.
    Or nothing.
This is a very pretty woman.

Completely agree. Totally blah outfit on someone who could make a paper bag look good. I made up a backstory in my head — she went to a glamorous event last night and crashed at a girlfriend’s house. These are her girlfriend’s clothes, but the shoes and sunglasses are hers.

Completely disagree. It may be subtle, but the fit of those shorts is ah-mazing!!!! Higher waist, interesting a line cut. VERY informative, and flattering. Although she does not need much flattering. Stil, the width of the shorts makes the legs loook very slender. You can tell her legs are more athletic, so its a wise choice. i also LOVE LOVE the tone on tone coloring. there is a LOT to this outfit if you keep your eyes OPEN.

She has a “beautiful model off-duty” look about her. Clearly photogenic; has a body for clothes; but a bra would be great, and the shorts have that untapered look of actual pants being turned into cut-offs.

Are people really going to gush over this outfit?

I won’t. She looks great DESPITE her bad outfit. The shorts are awful.

In my (not too humble) opinion, this post is about a great looking body, not of great style.

I disagree. When I look at the photo, I see *her*. What I don’t see: A studied, forced, stylized “look” being rammed down my throat (Look at me! Look at me!) by some “fashionable” person who is always “on” and whose identity is merely in the material. The NYC photo subjects are, to me, an excellent example of this. So few seem to actually inhabit their bodies. This young lady is so much more than a “look”–she is human, she is real. I find Mr. Schuman’s photos always technically good; I don’t particulary care for some of his subject choices again, specifically in NYC. I do understand he needs to appeal to a broad audience. His Harlem subjects are always terrific because they actually live the life of the clothes they wear. His Euro photos subjects to me are always superior to much of his NYC work precisely because of this. I can reach out and touch this young lady because she is so real, she is elegant because she is real…no artifice, no need to be “on”. She’s fabulous, Mr. Schuman. Thank you for expanding your range; I find myself coming to your site more and more because of it.

    No.
Exceptionally beautiful woman. But other than the earings, sunglasses and handbag, everything else is complely wrong for her, and wrong for Milan. The city is neither the lakes nor the coast, and one ignores this at one’s peril.

    • Best looking woman on this page by far

      August 8, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Thank goodness she ignored it. She looks better then all of the tidy, designer clothing clad women with no sense of adventure. i see a great attention to style, and a lot of thought in this casual outfit. People can have different opinions, but I think she looks at least twice as lovely as the too sweet looking african American girl in the vintage dress and flip flops, although she looks fine. This woman looks memorable. But my sister likes it less then me. So this is from us both.

        August 9, 2012 at 12:31 pm

Patrick, even the “always on” folk need to be “off” sometimes…and look! This goddess had her pic taken by THE SATORIALIST, looking just this way. We should all be this lucky. If she looked like everybody else–”fashionably correct” maybe she wouldn’t have caught Mr. Schuman’s eye.

LIZPR – Don’t think she needs a bra – looks like she would pass the pencil test – see who remembers that one ;o). But THANK YOU for mentioning the shorts *grimacing and shaking my head “no”*. Everything else is so elegant, even tho it’s casual, but the shorts are just tacky. She could have rolled cuffs to save it, but the ragged edge just ruins an otherwise lovely look. See, it isn’t enough to be pretty.

I really dislike her tank and shorts. It reminds me of what sloppy teenage American girls wear, not thin, glamorous Italians.

    • Isabelle

      August 5, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Your comment makes me think: what if this “young working-class American girl” look was actually cool, in Milan, because it is unexpected? Who knows.

I still think, though, that if there is a “second level” thinking to her outfit, it probably got lost in these baggy shorts.

  25. Andrew89

    August 5, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Those shorts really aren’t working for her thin physique. Maybe if they were slightly less loose-fitting. She is, as mentioned, very pretty.

But having worked years in retail and seeing countless customers in shorts, sandals, and some kind of very casual top, it’s pretty banal to see such pics on this here fashion blog.

I love braless. but this bralessness looks simply inelegant with, well, everything she’s wearing. she looks as if she’s unstable. I think that what is affecting me is the lack of tailoring for her age and all that red color. I feel there is more than enough red in the World. I, myself, am just now coming out of being poor for the last 4 years; it was especially bad for me last year. but, thank goodness, I didn’t need to buy resale, I just wore thin the still-dark blue denim & higher quality black tees, etc. that I purchased in previous years to maintain myself. and I still felt very, very fortunate. :)

I realized that my comment sounded disjointed.
what I meant to say was that I would not walk out of my home looking like this even if I were destitute, and I have admittedly been poor myself. and I have the same body type, if anyone wonders if I am envious. these photos are wonderful, though as usual!

I don’t think this outfit is ugly, and you can really see how you can pull off anything just paying attention to the details: this outfit is made by a good color combination, pretty shoes, bag and hairdo, earrings and shades. Everything else is just fine because of that, even interesting to look at and to consider as a trend… once more the presentation is what counts!

    Don’t care for her outfit
    but,
she’s so damn beautiful she can get away with wearing just about anything.

But, it’s not simply her beauty; America has more than its share of beautiful women; what the Europeans have is bearing, posture, presence, and pride. I don’t recall ever seeing a shot of a European slouching or with poor posture on this blog.

For me, it’s all about the presence, posture, bearing, and pride of Europeans.

    • Tonia

      August 6, 2012 at 12:48 pm

I made the same point. Style is not only about the garment and accessories, it is about confidence and presence.

I also like Sonia’s comment above. Attention to detail is everything. The glasses, the hair, the bag and the pop of yellow from her shoes – when put all together, makes a rather dull concept (cut off shorts and a tank) look good.

it’s great how her classic face and sunglasses have nothing to do with her outfit. But hey, it’s been hot here in Milan, and on an August day, when the city is half empty, almost anything goes if you are just running down to the store.

May I ask why you think not wearing a bra is unacceptable? I think it looks very cool if you can do it without being uncomfortable. I unfortunately cannot, seeing as I am quite busty, but I do secretly long for A cups + no bra + ever so slightly see through jersey T-shirt (think Acne t-shirts). Alluring (yet not at all cheap) and very very cool!

I love this site for posting different styles that challenge our perception of fashion. What is fashion and what isn’t, what is style and what isn’t. This outfit. in my opinion, is neither fashion nor style. But, as I said in a previous post, she is beautiful, but not doing it justice.

  78. Martina

    August 8, 2012 at 10:09 pm

GORGEOUS. Love the similar tones in shorts, purse and top, and contrasting color in the sandals. LOve the cut of the shorts. its giving the illusion of longer legs, shorter torso. Love the face too. This lady really, really, really knows how to flatter her figure. Its easy to see that she is a bit shorter in the legs but the proportions of the outfit fix this. This is a masterpiece of style.

Her face, body, and bone structure are so beautiful and fine that I almost missed the fact fashion and style are being ruthlessly slaughtered here. Minus her outfit, she is very chic! She is blessed with photogenic loveliness, making the job even easier for such a talented photographer that does not need any help. Sigh…

  81. anonymous

    August 9, 2012 at 12:42 pm

When I first looked at this picture, I noticed the awkward fit of the shorts around her waist. They seemed the wrong fit and accentuated how skinny her legs were. Maybe that was the point. Anyway, I also do not like the braless look, although I went braless throughout most of the 70′s and early 80′s. It just looks slovenly to me. I think I’d like to see women more dressed up in these photos to inspire me to do the same. Unfortunately, I tend to wear clothing more like this woman, sans the sang froid necessary to pull it off.
