  29. une chatte grise

    June 25, 2012 at 2:58 am

Hmmm. The jarring multiple prints, high-contrast color combinations, oddly-proportioned trousers… for me, it’s just too too much in a loud, unpleasant way, not a fun OTT way. (Third look excepted, of course.) Individual pieces might be quite nice on their own in mellower ensembles–the first shirt would look great with a pair of old jeans, as would the mauve print jacket (over a plain t-shirt). But as is… eep.

Something about it I don’t like at all. Burberry has really fallen from grace to me ever since the chav fashion used their print on fake baseball caps and pretty much anything they could get their hands on. Besides that they really haven’t done anything that interests me in a long time.

This show got me all giddy for the women’s line. Burberry has long rested an absolute favorite. Some of these prints would look gaudy anywhere else, but here they’re cut so exact that the eyes reconcile the color and the form in a truly dapper abstract.

As an American who lived and worked in Indonesia for two years, the 4th picture immediately made me think of Indonesian men in Batik shirts. I was interacting mostly with government officials on Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi and the rule of thumb seemed to be: the more important the man is, the bigger the patterns on his batik shirt. The size of an official’s cojones was directly proportional to the size of the flowers and birds and butterflies in the batik. By those standards, the 4th outfit looks quite feminine and demure. I’m all for embracing this look. Why should women have all the fun with prints?

The different prints and the one pop of color with each outfit — love it. The metallic handbag/clutch would not seem so out of place in Beijing, where manbags are popular (the bright magenta and gold color of them may raise eyebrows).
