I love her quirky yet understated style. Very individual, it makes her quietly but undeniably memorable.
I’m a big, big fan of this one. Her overall mood matches her outfit. She’s in a bubble of murmur.
The cuteness and awkwardness of her stand!
Love this picture!

love how the shoe laces match the dress! great attention to details!
The mocking glances of the girls behind are kind of sad :(

Stunning! This is a very Balenciaga moment for me – but taken from the runway, and made real on the street.

She is very beautiful and your shoes are fantastic. Very cute!

Love the dress!
I also like the two girls in the back
June 11, 2012 at 9:15 am
The blue and black and the red lips look great with her alabaster skin and dark hair, but her posture would surely make her mother cringe if she saw this photo.
June 11, 2012 at 9:17 am
Such an innocent face!
I really like the mixture of the “formal” dress and the converse!!
June 11, 2012 at 9:18 am
she s the cutest thing ever
June 11, 2012 at 9:23 am
good one !
June 11, 2012 at 9:29 am
What a beautiful face, she’s perfect. Red lipstick on a face like hers is meaningful (in a way that it make sens without being obvious). And the dust of lace on her sleeve makes her look even more fragile. (And please excuse my bad English on every of my comments… I’m French!).

The socks and hr red lipstick make the look great shot
June 11, 2012 at 9:37 am
I love that it looks like the boringly dressed girls behind her are sort of laughing or gossiping about her – when she looks fabulous and original! This is a whole movie waiting to happen about how some girls (or boys) are brave enough to wear something different from the crowd. Love her!
June 11, 2012 at 9:38 am
Such a great pic! It really tells a story…Bravo.
June 11, 2012 at 9:39 am
like all that she’s wearing except the socks, another color would have been better
June 11, 2012 at 9:40 am
love the pop pf turquoise color! This can help to create the look http://bit.ly/J03dE0
June 11, 2012 at 9:44 am
Very cool style, and the photography… genious!
June 11, 2012 at 9:47 am
This is a very interesting picture. The stance of the lady is somewhat a shy or awkward one, yet she also seems to be very comfortable with her style, the blue of the laces really matches well with the dress, and her dark hair along side her light skin really help bring out her lip colour. I also find it somewhat amusing of the two girls in the left of the picture that seem to almost be laughing at this girl (perhaps not), yet they are sporting that very annoying fashion of ripped jeans, not very well dressed themselves, although the right one has lovely hair. I like the photo in context with the background, I think it has much more charge and excitement, than if it were against a blank background. Nicely done!
Nice metropolitan outfit!!!

The girl at the back is looking at her shoes… Or shoe laces… Or socks… What do I know?
A nice catch.

This is what I love about inspiration pictures…even when the style of the picture is not one I’m likely to imitate, the color combinations featured can be easily replicated and reinterpreted in my own style. This is the case here, although for her, it certainly fits great!
June 11, 2012 at 9:58 am
Goodness…those stares, were they staged??
Tory Burch giveaway!
What I like the most about this photo are the two girls on the left. One is a photographer ready to take a picture of the shoes ? Fun and colorful.
June 11, 2012 at 10:01 am
her red lips…
from Turin with love
I am captivated by this image! Her peaceful almost defiant expression, her posture, the outfit (naturally), the onlookers and her beautiful face. Incredible!
June 11, 2012 at 10:02 am
I really like the two girls in the background smirking at you while you take the picture: very funny!
June 11, 2012 at 10:04 am
To me this girl totally stand out from the masses with her fragile pose and distinctive style. like!!
Wow. You really are a master at capturing the decisive moment.

June 11, 2012 at 10:12 am
Thank you for shooting and posting this. From her vulnerability, to her implicit strength, to the girls’ reactions – it’s a story of adolescence! Great shot.
June 11, 2012 at 10:16 am
Look at the girls behind her…
how examined her!
June 11, 2012 at 10:17 am
Love the teal accents. Not the stares behind her.
Your pictures is always amazing!
June 11, 2012 at 10:22 am
Gorgeous, natural. Could be straight out of a GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE impressionist painting if it were painted in modern times.
June 11, 2012 at 10:32 am
such a great dress!

LOVING HER DRESS

Look at the girls in the background! So focused on the girl:)
Which leads even more of the attention at her

one of my very favorite pics on your blog because it says much more than the regular “fashion” shots
June 11, 2012 at 11:00 am
Interesting combination. Her red lips give a freshness in her face!
Love that dress!
June 11, 2012 at 11:02 am
WOW, does this picture tell a story or what!?!?! Look at those girls behind her! And her posture is so awkward! Love it!!!
June 11, 2012 at 11:06 am
Interesting dress, not really a fan but the background is amazing. Love the two girls in the background look hot!
June 11, 2012 at 11:07 am
The picture is great, but my eye is drawn to the two girls in the back looking at the girl you are shooting :p
June 11, 2012 at 11:08 am
Such a pretty dress, would love to see it with some heels and a pretty clutch, but ofcourse that wouldn’t suit this girl.
Love how her shoelaces match the dress

Love the dress !
June 11, 2012 at 11:27 am
This reminds me of high school. I’ve “pinned” it to my Beautiful Pictures board and my caption reads, “Who cares what they think.”
She’s beautiful, and beautifully and individually dressed. Love the story this picture tells.
June 11, 2012 at 11:30 am
I have never commented on any of your pictures before but I will on this one.
It goes beyond the girl and the outfit she’s wearing, it tells a story. About fashion, identity, and confidence (or the lack of it). Looking at her awkward posture one might think that she is not really at ease (and maybe she isn’t) but at the same time it takes great confidence to put on bright red lipstick in the morning (talking from experience I waited to be in my thirties to give it a try) and pull of such a quirky outfit.
While the two girls in the back have chosen a saver option to dress themselves (the prevailing aesthetic of t-shirt + jeans + sandals) and by such assimilate to most teens in the world, she has chosen to go her way and experiment with fashion. Using it as a tool to express herself. That’s why you chose to shoot her and not the two girls…
But then again…all this is based on my assumptions, judgments and thoughts. The picture operates as a mirror. My mirror. The two girls might be saying: Wow, look at her cool socks and bleu laces!
Well done! Was it happenstance?
June 11, 2012 at 11:31 am
Love the pic!!!
June 11, 2012 at 11:32 am
What a brilliant shot. The world just seems to pause in her little bubble…
June 11, 2012 at 11:33 am
wow, very interesting picture.. especially the jealous (?) looks of the two girls behind her. She really stands out. Love the colours, the teal, brown and red go very well with her skin and hair. Really beautiful dress as well, anyone knows where it’s from?
June 11, 2012 at 11:34 am
She is very special! I immediately like her. Those two girls behind her, though; can’t make up if they accidently looked at her while laughing or if she was the joke. But that wouldn’t bother me either; it takes strength to stand out from the crowd! Especially when you do it in a good way.
June 11, 2012 at 11:37 am
she looks like a ghost … but she is very sweet
June 11, 2012 at 11:47 am
Such a fun image…easy to imagine “thought bubbles”…everyone looks good.
June 11, 2012 at 11:53 am
My compliments will include the “tres chic shadow” of the gentleman on the right that also is wearing a combination of browns and blues. I will said it looks like her harmonized sartorial guardian angel.
June 11, 2012 at 11:55 am
LOVE this! Everything that was said about both the girl being photographed and the girls in the background. Did anyone else notice that the girls are also wearing the same sandals, just different colors?

The lace trim on the sleeve is so sweet, love this picture.

Scott, your work inspires everybody on the web. With no exaggeration (pardon my english, I’m french!), the way you and Garance took over the blogosphere and find a new way of expressions is really inspiring.
I’m not a fashion blogger, I’m in fond of cinema (it shows how much you put yourself outside the “fashion industry”) and I love to picture the great life that could be seen on (on or at, damn I never know!) the big screen and I think yours would clearly deserve a movie!
Here is the link of my article (in french and english): http://www.jaivuaucinema.com/2012/06/ovvac-37-scott-schumanthe-sartorialist.html

I think she’s very young, but looks lovely:):)
Wow she is really beautiful. I love that old fashioned dress on her.
June 11, 2012 at 12:13 pm
this is a great shot.
The outfit and girl are cute but the people in the background really make the shot.
Some people think those girls behind her are mocking her?
Thats not what I see.
June 11, 2012 at 12:15 pm
LOVE! Adolescence captured. The girls behind her are wearing whatever Seventeen Magazine is telling them to (they even have identical shoes on), but you can bet after seeing this, they went to the next store to buy turquoise shoelaces.
I also love that in this shot it’s not just about the subject — there is so much movement going on in the background. Truly a story being told.
June 11, 2012 at 12:19 pm
Like the outfit of the girl behind, laidback outfit with white t-shirt, jeans and sandals..
June 11, 2012 at 12:22 pm
The dress is so pretty, and the girl has a lovely face! I love how she matched the rather elegant dress to a pair of shoes that could not be more casual!
June 11, 2012 at 12:26 pm
Initially, adoring the colors of the center subject but not really liking the outfit but loving the freshness and originality of her way of thinking……then there’re the “mean girls” off to the side with their body language giving off “what’s so special about her looks?” and they make me love the center subject even more!
Love the skin tone / dress / lipstick mix

June 11, 2012 at 12:41 pm
Lovely young woman with a cool schoolgirl chic!
June 11, 2012 at 12:51 pm
I don’t usually comment on blogs I follow, but this time I can’t help it. The moment I saw this picture, it just stroke me. This picture is all about your blog is.
This girl might look insecure but she dares look different from others. And those girls at the back, mocking or making comments on this girl just reflects the reality of facing ‘the street’ and people’s look.
Your blog, is about self-expressing through clothes and style. It is about being ourselves, daring and bearing. The thing is that it is not necessarily easy and it can represent a big challenge. This girl seems to live this challenge, and being featured on your blog is a kind of reward.
To me this picture says ‘Look, you may want to make fun of me but here I am standing out of the crowd’
Your blog is all about standing out of the crowd, and thank you for giving us so many reasons to dare being ourselves, this girl give us a big lesson. Let’s be proud of being what we want. Great job !
June 11, 2012 at 12:53 pm
Quirky and cute. Story of the odd girl being made fun of by the “normal” girls. She stands out.
June 11, 2012 at 1:00 pm
I love the two in the background looking on.
The Fancy Teacup
This picture is definitely worth at least a thousand words. The color combination, her doll face, the pairing of the dress with the sneakers, all so chic. The way the girls are reacting in the background is also very interesting.
June 11, 2012 at 1:07 pm
I love this. She is going her own way.
June 11, 2012 at 1:19 pm
Wow – what I love the most about this shot is the two girls in the background and the looks on their faces. Obviously, I have no idea what is actually going on, but it seems like an image out of a high school hallway: ‘awkward nerdy girl with style’, gets made fun of, behind her back, by the ‘mean girls’. Completely my own perspective and not meant to be at all realistic – I don’t mean to offend anyone.
June 11, 2012 at 1:20 pm
This picture has such a story! So intriguing..
June 11, 2012 at 1:22 pm
You’ve expressed a singular moment in time. Your subject has the power of personal style as she evokes a reaction from her surroundings. Beautiful.
June 11, 2012 at 1:37 pm
the enlarged view of this photo shows the world weary expression of the girl, yet she seems to express her hope in the beauty of life with her clothes.
it is wonderful to see such care taken in putting together an outfit, from the cute lace tee underneath the great fabric chosen to match beloved shoes. i have no doubt the dress was home sewn.
i for one was so captivated by the main subject of this photo i didn’t notice the background girl until reading other’s comments :)
June 11, 2012 at 1:39 pm
I think we all want to believe the two girls in the back are smirking little *&()%)(.
But we don’t know! The story of Snow White being told here may have nothing to do with the reality of the moment. In that split second of the photograph, they may have been admiring the shoes or looking at them while laughing about something unrelated.
June 11, 2012 at 1:42 pm
she looks great…and so the the man behind her!
June 11, 2012 at 1:43 pm
Greatest thing about this photo is the look on those girl’s faces in the background! Don’t know what they think of this outfit but I love it!
June 11, 2012 at 1:57 pm
i don’t know why,but this reminds me a lot of “closer”,maybe because the background, maybe because her youth and freshness, the way she carry her bag
June 11, 2012 at 2:10 pm
I like those shoes and socks :)
June 11, 2012 at 2:17 pm
beautiful..love what she’s wearing so so much!!!

June 11, 2012 at 2:31 pm
I’m confused. I love the sassy, standout look of her outfit, but the way she’s posed is apologetic. Stand up, girl. You did good, be proud. I hope you are not a model, being paid to look helpless. The world does no need more helpless women.
I really like her outfit.

Interesting outfit. Love her dress!
June 11, 2012 at 2:49 pm
Perhaps my comment will have no connection to the style of the girl, however what I found interesting about this pictures, are the two girls on the left side of the picture. I am not sure if it was done on purpose, but looks cool!
June 11, 2012 at 2:51 pm
Notice the catty girls in the back , also notice how no one is taking there picture!
June 11, 2012 at 2:53 pm
This is one those photos that 5 or 10 years from now, that girl is going to look back at this photo and realize what it was saying. No matter how people perceived her back then, this photo was saying, “You’re gonna be great.”
I hope she realizes that she’s beautiful and knows it’s people like her who make the world grow and be new.
June 11, 2012 at 3:00 pm
Oh, her dress is beautiful. I love the blue laces too.
June 11, 2012 at 3:03 pm
hahaha….one of my fav shots. i like photographs with stories.
June 11, 2012 at 3:06 pm
She is not comfortable in this world. Perhaps somewhere darker and quieter would suit but not this.
June 11, 2012 at 3:07 pm
I love her quirky style & her posture is so cute.
The timing of this photo was perfect with the mocking girls in the back..goodness.
June 11, 2012 at 3:14 pm
she’s so cool with an ” i don’t care” attitude! i loooove! <3
June 11, 2012 at 3:16 pm
And it’s also crazy how people seem to be judging these girls in the background for judging the girl.. When you’re doing exactly the same thing, judging their looks, etc. Little do you know, these girls might not be mean or bitchy, simply intrigued.
June 11, 2012 at 3:20 pm
Geek chic (and I mean that in a good way!).
June 11, 2012 at 3:24 pm
I love this picture! There is so much meaning to what might be a very straight forward shot. My eye went straight to the two girls admiring the subject’s style. Maybe they are deciding to take her picture also, since one is holding a camera in hand ready to sneak a shot. I love the subjects calm demeanor as she stands in the middle of a busy scene. I love the American flag that hangs above it all reminding us that we are all different yet the same. I love this picture!
June 11, 2012 at 3:27 pm
I have never been to USA. But I read your blog more than two years, and sometimes I think that photos of yours made New York a place quite familiar to me. “I’ve seen this man!” – I think, like I saw him in person walking near Grand Park. This picture is so vivid that I almost hear city noises.

I really love what you have captured here. The girl looks amazing, her akwardness and imperfection of the outfit simply make her perfect! (I really hope those two girls are just admiring her, and not laughing at her!).
Aaaaaaand…..the 90s are officially back.
June 11, 2012 at 4:44 pm
I like the girls behind her, “Look at that outfit! So cool. Did you see her dress and shoes?”
June 11, 2012 at 4:58 pm
:D the girls in background
June 11, 2012 at 5:08 pm
What everyone else said – wearing vintage evening glamour with converse is inspired. Great timing with the shot! (Those girls wish they could be so cool!)
June 11, 2012 at 5:33 pm
I am a sucker for matchy-matchy. I love how perfectly her shoes + socks match that dress she’s wearing. Brava.

I love the girls behind, staring at her shoes and socks. She is totally unique!
June 11, 2012 at 6:28 pm
of course the beauties in back make it a cut above, and the gent in the blue tie …..
June 11, 2012 at 6:37 pm
love her….and the girls in the back….she looks so comfortable…she wears her clothes
June 11, 2012 at 6:45 pm
hmm a lot of these comments are VERY judgemental of the girls in the background just because they have a more typical style, but actually the girl with the white top her jeans are the perfect cut and colour. It’s great to appreciate people who have fun with fashion but i don’t think we need to make bitchy comments about those who dress more normal and everyday. They probably have different interests. The girl’s dress is stunning though!!
June 11, 2012 at 6:51 pm
This photo is perfect. I imagine you being so thrilled to have captured this moment with the girl’s in the background with their gaze over at her. So many stories in this photograph.
June 11, 2012 at 8:54 pm
I’m sorry, but the girls in the background look very judgmental to me, and they don’t seem to be liking this woman’s taste. I find that in itself rather awful. As to the woman’s style, I like it.
June 11, 2012 at 8:55 pm
Great colors, cute girl, unattractive, scared posture. Get a bold spirit Girl, to go with your bold clothes!

June 11, 2012 at 9:48 pm
Wait, how did this one get by me? Her awkward poise is that of innocence. The shade of lipstick against her skin gives her a warm glow.
June 11, 2012 at 9:54 pm
This is probably one of your funnier shots.
June 11, 2012 at 10:06 pm
This is a fabulous photo.
The central element is this young woman. From her, four figures seem to move around and complete what she symbolizes.
At the far right, a woman walks in the opposite direction that this young woman goes to and her boring style and substance don´t stand out from the crowd. She disappears from her. She´s everything this young woman is not. She symbolizes what is uncatchy.
At the left, two provocative girls look at her, at the same time making fun but admiring her. They´re beautiful, possibly have artistic tendencies, but they are like all common beautiful girls everywhere in the world. Never did they had the courage to dress like her, and maybe by looking at her, they will copy her style, but will never have her substance. They symbolize what is beautiful but without a soul of its own.
But for me, it was really curious to see how this young woman´s style and substance was solidly supported in the background by the man´s classical style. What gives us the sense of meaning and timelessness of this young woman´s style is this subtle blend with the men´s style, in my opinion.
She´s bold but balanced, strange but comfortable, shy but full of fire and she symbolizes what a bright future stands in front of us in a quiet moment of the present. Only in the U.S.A. can we see this.
I´m sorry if i was too long or pretentious, but, again, this is a remarkable picture.
June 11, 2012 at 10:23 pm
I like that you captured the two girls in the background. They seem to laugh at the girl’s shoes or socks, but I think there’s nothing more rewarding in fashion than evoking some kind of reaction… even if it’s jealousy or hatred. There’s nothing worse than indifference.
une chatte grise
June 11, 2012 at 10:27 pm
It’s hard to tell whether the girls in the background are just checking out that lovely young woman’s look or being snarky. If they are being mean girls, I hope they come to understand that she looks far more interesting and cool than they do. (And I hope she stands up tall and strong and owns her coolness!)
June 11, 2012 at 10:38 pm
I’m thinking this is some very good photo shopping. She looks like she is floating. Still love the outfit.
June 11, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Love the shot, especially all of the peripherals! The girl has a lovely, understated look, and she’s very pretty. The only thing that I dislike is that she doesn’t look comfortable in this shot. Whether it was her being caught off guard, or she’s generally shy, but I just wish she straightened up and really took a minute to enjoy her gorgeous look with a bit more confidence.
June 11, 2012 at 10:53 pm
Green of envy, should be the name of this picture.
June 11, 2012 at 11:49 pm
Such a baby, awkward and nervous at the prospect of being saved for prosperity I would guess!
June 12, 2012 at 12:23 am
The girls behind her look like they’re talking smack about her. Hilarious.
June 12, 2012 at 12:39 am
This shot will become iconic.
June 12, 2012 at 12:43 am
This is a great picture. The background is as interesting as this amazing girl. Wow, don’t see that often. Plus I just downed a bottle of wine. Maybe that is way I am so impressed, but who cares, this is a great pic.
Another great story told in this picture.
June 12, 2012 at 1:34 am
Love everything about this shot…her awkward pose, her dress, her bright blue shoelaces, and the fact that though time stands still for her, the rest of NY goes on.
June 12, 2012 at 2:55 am
I agree with some of the comments above.
I LOVE how you’ve captured this awkward snow white beauty.
They LOOK at her mockingly, but secretly applaud her for her bravery and uniqueness.
June 12, 2012 at 3:29 am
Amazing girl *_*
June 12, 2012 at 4:52 am
Love the harmony of chocolate brown and cyan in her outfit a wonderful and unlikely fit!
June 12, 2012 at 4:57 am
This is great. I read avidly and rarely comment, but felt I had to…I still don’t know why exactly. “Kendal Lo” drew the parallel to high school mean girls which is exactly what I saw when I looked at this. However instead of the girl I instantly saw myself and relived the exact same looks I used to get. Today, my style is still entirely my own, however I get more looks of admiration than disdain. Perhaps my perception has changed of the onlookers and what their stares mean. My confidence has certainly grown which has taught me that how you wear something is just as important as what you wear.
Now I assume the girls behind are malicious however I acknowledge I can’t truly know. However this was my first and lingering impression in spite of fight against prejudice.
I’ve read that you often try to “arrange” your subjects in such a way that appears natural or creates a sort of character of them in the moment (my regurgitation of your ideas), however this picture is so involved with the various figures in the background that I’m curious how you orchestrated it. It is brilliantly done, and like I said much of that is because of the relationship between background and the figure.
She is beautiful. She looks awkward and unsure of herself but seeking her own voice in a world that is so busy with its own norms. This actually gives me a sense of hope as well. I see her inner strength displayed by her unique beauty which sets her apart from others. Though it may separate her now you can see the potential within her to blossom above the rest. Anyways, there are my thoughts.
I love it and everything else you do. I don’t think I would have developed my own sartorial confidence and breadth of knowledge if it were not for your work’s influence. So thanks for being awesome. Stay classy Scott.

Cinderella and the stepsisters!! Nice shot :)
June 12, 2012 at 5:12 am
WOW, simply awesome. Genius shooting Mr. Schuman !
June 12, 2012 at 5:44 am
Love her dress. She is worlds apart from those ordinary looking girls behind. Beautiful girl – beautiful shot.
June 12, 2012 at 5:47 am
Haters going to hate. Shine on.

June 12, 2012 at 7:21 am
She looks great!
June 12, 2012 at 7:25 am
I wish she’d stand up straight! Nice dress – and I like the swirl of people behind.
June 12, 2012 at 7:44 am
Like turquoise lace and dress detail combination.
June 12, 2012 at 7:59 am
Notice the two girls laughing on the left – I don’t know why as she’s so pretty and is dressed in a very cute kooky way. She’s really beautiful!
June 12, 2012 at 8:18 am
The two girls on the left-hand side definitely noticed her too.
IS THIS IT? models review
June 12, 2012 at 8:34 am
She looks great… and so the two girls on the left, and the guy on the right… :)
June 12, 2012 at 8:51 am
But she looks like she is floating above the ground! Does anyone else see this?? cool.
June 12, 2012 at 9:02 am
Love how she stand out from teh crowd!
June 12, 2012 at 10:57 am
What a great pic, I lover everything about it from her style to the expression on her face!!
June 12, 2012 at 11:23 am
It’s almost as if her kneecaps are part of the outfit. Love the shot.
June 12, 2012 at 11:44 am
The girl with the red lips is cute, but it’s interesting how most of the commentators assume the two girls in the background are “mean
girls”. Maybe they are just posing for the photographer they see on
the street as is the girl with the red lips.
June 12, 2012 at 12:27 pm
Stand up staight, pretty girl and own it. Looks great.
I don’t think the girls in the background are nefarious, just observing the spectacle of a photograph being taken.
June 12, 2012 at 12:44 pm
…..she needs a skateboard!
June 12, 2012 at 12:47 pm
(What did the girls on the back say):
- Look, they’re taking her picture!
- What’s so stylish about her, I look better!
- Come on, don’t be jealous, just smile, we can get photographed by Scott Schuman!
- Actually, I like her dress… and the sneakers are not bad…
June 12, 2012 at 2:05 pm
Snow White and the mean girls, brought to you by The Sartorialist!
I love how she looks so uninterested while she is causing sensation on the street (and the web).
Great pic Sart. And go Snow!
June 12, 2012 at 2:15 pm
haha look at the girls behind her :)
June 12, 2012 at 2:59 pm
That dress is amazing. Wow. Great styling and beautiful girl as always.

June 12, 2012 at 3:32 pm
Wish I could meet this girl! She seems so interesting.
And I love the two girls in the background mumbling; they wish they had that much style :P
June 12, 2012 at 3:49 pm
Defenitely one of your best photos. Love the way she is possing and the two girls, who look like they are gossiping, or justing watching, I don’t know. But its so perfect. Love the colors in the picture and that girl.
June 12, 2012 at 4:19 pm
I LOVE this.
It find it amusing that the girls in the background of the photo with their mocking/judgmental glances have absolutely no idea that the very girl they are seemingly making fun of is about to be featured on a fashion blog for her style and beauty.
Never, ever be bothered by what others think of you – be YOURSELF!
June 12, 2012 at 5:17 pm
Love the dress and the socks, but not the shoes. Her posture and the shoes make this overall look feel more little girl instead of grown up woman. Not sure if that’s what she was going for…
June 12, 2012 at 7:54 pm
i love this shot – i dont think the girls behind are mocking or making fun of the subject, i dont get that feeling at all…to me they appear to be more curious as to why you would pick a girl with those kind of shoes whereas their outfits are more to the ‘norm’ of a young girl….its a great shot! great city scene…love the metallic dress too…
June 12, 2012 at 9:44 pm
So perfect. The way she is standing, the two friends looking at her, one with a camera, possibly herself wanting to take a photo of your subject. The man in the suit…everything is just amazing. And how pretty is the dress and her tennies!!!
I am rather disturbed by how everyone has jumped to the odd conclusion the two girls are somehow showing animosity to her or Scott. I doubt they are. But people obviously are very ready to think that women hate each other, and that makes me sad. You people need to clear your minds. Its not the girls that are acting mean, its you.
June 12, 2012 at 9:55 pm
is that a christopher kane s/s 2012 dress or a knock-off? regardless, the ensemble is sublime because she is being herself, which is the most beautiful thing any of us can clothe ourselves with.
June 12, 2012 at 10:35 pm
Just love the two girls behind, checking her out in this moment like they’re debating with you and your choice of subject.
June 12, 2012 at 11:46 pm
Your outfit is just perfect, so feminine and sexy!!! I love the black lace dress!
June 13, 2012 at 12:09 am
Don’t get me wrong, I love the photo, I love the dress, I love the face + awkward stance . . .
But do people still get kudos for (barely) matching laces and socks to the dress?? I mean cmon, you can picture her out shopping for exactly this pair of colors to “go with”. Haven’t we gotten past MATCHING and onto COMPLEMENTING?
June 13, 2012 at 12:12 am
I like the girls on the left. They look healthy and simple.
June 13, 2012 at 1:16 am
i just love the two girls in the background
June 13, 2012 at 1:23 am
wow it’s kind of amazing how she pulls off the converse with that dress!
June 13, 2012 at 1:24 am
feminine and yet striving for comfort.innocence and sweetness from this girl.
June 13, 2012 at 3:03 am
This is gorgeous! Always love to see such unexpected combinations.
June 13, 2012 at 6:16 am
love her red lips and casual look…
June 13, 2012 at 7:16 am
The entire composition of this picture is one in an million. Her pale skin against the dominant colors in her outfit. The fancy fabric against the allstars. The uncomfort in her pose and the two girls that are walking by.. Amazing picture Scott Schuman! This has to go in your (hopefully) new book!
June 13, 2012 at 7:48 am
I love the background – with the equally pretty girls gossiping. Such a great snap.
June 13, 2012 at 8:33 am
She’s levitating !
June 13, 2012 at 10:00 am
Her expression, her body language captured in the picture is just perfection and I love the mean cheerleaders in the back giving her a look…. it freshes up the whole scene
June 13, 2012 at 10:30 am
great dress nicely matching shoes and also the satchel !
Love the color mix of turquoise and red though body language doesn’t appeal to me
June 13, 2012 at 10:33 am
Love this shot – she reminds me of Ellen Page/Juno.
June 13, 2012 at 11:25 am
I love the girls talking shit in the background.
June 13, 2012 at 11:26 am
This is what I love about New York. What works in a smaller town is not so celebrated in Manhattan. Different and unusual is looked at with curiosity elsewhere but is photographed and applauded in NYC. As a hat wearer, I can attest to the fact that I get second looks from people on the street every day, both quizzical and admiring. I’m sure this photo did not have to be ‘staged’ at all.
June 13, 2012 at 11:56 am
oooh, she’s lovely!
June 13, 2012 at 4:14 pm
Such a beautiful photo… she looks like the kind of girl Robert Smith writes songs about.
June 13, 2012 at 5:35 pm
Interesting that the 2 girls on the left are deciding whether they like the outfit or not…or maybe they were just jealous of the girl getting her picture taken by Scott Schuman.
June 13, 2012 at 11:05 pm
It looks like everyone in the background is posing for you too! Beautiful shot. I can’t wait to live in New York City.
June 13, 2012 at 11:47 pm
Wish I could meet a girl like this.
June 14, 2012 at 12:54 am
A young Geena Davis!
June 14, 2012 at 4:15 am
Nice one! But it’s really wired..it looks like she have benn pasted in this bakground.. looks like she is floating..
June 14, 2012 at 5:36 am
I love the subject’s quirky style but for my honestly the girl with the camera stands out not only for her beauty but also because she is dressed in alot simpler than the subject and stood out to me as a simple yet effortless beauty with less makeup than the subject too.
June 14, 2012 at 6:08 am
June 14, 2012 at 9:08 am
This isn’t just a beautiful photograph of a great outfit on a beautiful young woman, it’s a story! I see Cinderella…those two snickering girls off to the side are her wicked step sisters. We know who is the most beautiful! We know who will win the fashion prince! Love it!
June 14, 2012 at 3:35 pm
Lovely photo. I love her blue dress with matching sneaker laces.
The girls in the back seem intrigued.
June 14, 2012 at 5:39 pm
But look at the girl in the white shirt and jeans with holes behind her – you should take a photo also of her!
June 14, 2012 at 5:49 pm
This photograph is incredible. The awkward, unassuming genius of the girl in the fantastic dress and sneakers versus the “mean girls,” straight out of a Delias catalogue. Those girls can snicker all they want, but the subject of the photo will always stand out because of her creative style.
June 14, 2012 at 10:46 pm
haha, love how the people who say they never comment have written so much! can’t read all these to know what they have said, but the girls in back are so super cute, i imagine they are all friends, and are smiling with her, not laughing at her. CUTUMS!
June 14, 2012 at 11:41 pm
I have to agree with most commenters that this is an incredible, incredible image. I love her outfit, the colours, textures, accessories, the way that she’s playing with items and has a true sense of personal style. And I love the way that those girls in the background add a greater narrative to the photograph.
June 15, 2012 at 12:12 am
As someone who’s guilty of checking out other girls’ outfits, I think the girls in the background are liking her style! It’s super sweet and age-appropriate.
June 15, 2012 at 1:30 am
I know who the cool kid is.
June 15, 2012 at 4:14 am
the two girls in the background do not seem to be smirking nor malicious to me.
i don’t know why some people assume that they are…sometimes we project too much of ourselves into a photograph.
in any case, messenger bags are terrible for your back
June 15, 2012 at 6:28 am
awesome back side ^_^
honestly I like those two girls much more
June 15, 2012 at 10:07 am
What I like about this picture is that the girl you’re shooting has a unique style, but she does look a bit shy. And the funny thing are the two girls in the back. They stare at the girl who’s begin photographed, even laughing about at her (maybe), but the thing is that you’re shooting HER and not them in their convenient style. So GO shy girl with the original outfit!
This is why I still read your blog by the way among the oversupply of other street style blogs! X An-sofie from Belgium
June 15, 2012 at 12:32 pm
there is a great narrative here. personal style trumps all that is fashionable / trendy. she may be “quirky” to the girls in the back yet she is the center of attention. nice shot!
June 15, 2012 at 1:41 pm
Great photo, and love her quirky look! Tell her to watch out for those MEAN GIRLS behind her!!!
June 16, 2012 at 4:02 am
The man behind with the (possibly gabardine) suit in brown, mix of blues & mauve in shirt & tie, perfect white handckerfief in the breast pocket, and I pressume.. tassel loafers; it’s more important to me than the “wanna-be” posh girls, and of course, the main subject of the pic. This man exhales class!!
June 16, 2012 at 6:24 am
love this pic:) also love the way the 2 girls behind her are looking at her.
June 16, 2012 at 9:35 am
I think the photo captures the subtle gorgeous shy girl in the forefront as the two obvious pretty run of the mill girls are in the background. They both really want to be her but they can’t,because this young lady is beautiful, in every way.
June 16, 2012 at 10:06 am
Wow… this photo has so many stories that can be told. So funny how you capture the girls in the back lurking. =)
June 16, 2012 at 2:32 pm
It’s funny how the girls behind her make fun of her… I find the photo really well-taken. I don’t know if it was made in purpose but anyways, that photo is just perfect. (and the girl is absolutely gorgeous.)
June 16, 2012 at 6:32 pm
oh the individualist vs the conformists….. love the accidental mise en scene
June 16, 2012 at 7:15 pm
Lovely. Something very ‘japanese’ in her posture.
June 17, 2012 at 2:30 am
I love every detail…the dress and the girl.
June 17, 2012 at 2:44 am
Her posture might seem awkward to some, but I see strength and confident in those eyes…and that’s what counts for me…
June 17, 2012 at 5:03 am
June 17, 2012 at 8:08 am
I really dislike those girls in the back. They look like they’re laughing at her….
June 17, 2012 at 10:45 am
Those girls in the back make the photo really sad… But her dress. I die.
June 17, 2012 at 12:20 pm
Hoooo ella parece un vampiro. Beaty girl, really!
Wendy at Salt and Wine
June 17, 2012 at 1:34 pm
The snarky girls make her look that much more admirable and endearing – excellent shot!

June 18, 2012 at 6:31 pm
Come on! It’s a photo taken in a split second that captures other people’s slice of life too. I’m surprised your usually savvy readers see this as girls being jealous and judgmental of each other (popular culture stereotypes). They seem more in their own world and just happen to be looking in the direction of your subject.
June 19, 2012 at 6:38 pm
June 20, 2012 at 1:50 am
Interesting shot… and interesting the conclusions people jump to about the women in the background.
I can’t quite get my head around it. Like someone said before, she looks like she’s floating above the ground. The shadows sort of seem off too. Dare I ask if it is a photoshop composite?
June 20, 2012 at 2:11 pm
Gossip girls in the back ;) I love her quirkiness!
June 23, 2012 at 9:20 am
She looks like photoshopped into this background, especially looking at the shoes, it feels like she’s hovering over the ground, it’s this feeling and her straight look that makes people feel attracted to the picture I guess.
June 23, 2012 at 10:43 am
One of your best pictures ever. Do it in black and white and frame it. this is the moneyshot.
June 23, 2012 at 10:44 am
actually, crop the guy out in the suit, and just have the 3 girls. Brillian!
Life is not a teen drama on CW
June 24, 2012 at 12:26 am
Awesome dress and make up on the girl in front.I am delighted we are getting back to matching rather then “going together” it make more impact.
Great photo as always. Scott’s most interesting shots are group like this, and its interesting to see what pople make of them. Well…except this time.
The two girls in their beat up shorts and plain clothing are obviously not looking to be photographed, and are NOT laughing at anyone. they are just walking and talking with each other and laughing at something. Watch less TV, people.
June 24, 2012 at 12:50 am
Great composition, the young lady displays all the characteristics of a wallflower, just like her dress. Plucked from obscurity to center place she displays her insecurity – just beautiful. The two wannabe “it” women in the background captures an apt reflection of today’s society. It is interesting that one of the women is quite interested in the wallflowers shoes or bag and carries a camera, perhaps a potential street fashionista?
June 30, 2012 at 4:51 pm
The bold beauty stands out against the dull and the hazy. Her dress is beautiful, and the quirkiness of her shoes make her all the more fantastic. Great capture
July 6, 2012 at 12:25 am
the girls in the back steal the show i love their boho chic look :)
July 6, 2012 at 3:08 pm
Love her awkward pose. Her originality being laughed at by some skanks in the background. This has to be one of my favourites. Nice one Scott. Wallace.
July 7, 2012 at 8:05 pm
Her posture is awful, she would look even better if she wasn’t standing so unnaturally.
July 31, 2012 at 3:30 am
This is a pearl. The ones behind are CZ – flashy and fake. Takes something else to appreciate such beauty despite her posture. And that face – exceptional.
July 31, 2012 at 3:40 pm
I LOVE that outfit. I love mixing dressy with casual, it’s a great way to avoid looking boring. And I think she knows she’s pretty. I do that awkward thing too, to be cute, and I don’t look anywhere near that beautiful. She’s not insecure. And yes, it looks like the girls in the back are mocking, but I might be wrong. It makes an amazing picture, though.
August 4, 2012 at 4:12 pm
wow she really stands out! :)
August 22, 2012 at 5:21 pm
The girl in the background holding the clipboard has pretty turquoise nail polish. I wonder if she’s noticing the blue/aqua/cyan of the outfit on the girl in the foreground because it’s a favorite color?
