Take away the smart phone and don’t you think you could drop this picture into the 1950s and it would be right in place?
Also, I want pinch those chubby chubby cheeks!! :)

Nice picture. The baby was looking at the camera!

However, smart match.

The epitomy of the yummy mummy! But regardless I love her ballerina bun with the simple hair band.

Love this picture! She’s so simple and classy!
So cute! the valentino pumps, the quick bun, polka dots. I love it. I always dream of being that cute new york mom with simple but chic style.
unfortunate that white bag cuts off her leg at an unfortunate spot! i’m sure she has gorgeous legs.

So Cute! That baby is sayin “hi Scott!”
June 8, 2012 at 9:56 am
OOOHH! Nice … very simple and chic.
Agree with Natasha Fatah – this woman, sans phone, could easily be from the 50s.
Scott – I don’t supposed you’d wanna photo shop out the phone, place in her hand a compact, and re-vamp this in black and white???
June 8, 2012 at 9:58 am
A real person not in the fashion industry doing everyday things – nice to see. (Don’t get me wrong – I love the fashion industry photos, but it’s nice to see the real people who live in NYC.)
June 8, 2012 at 10:03 am
Well, hello to you too, little one…Scott, you might consider a career in baby photography, if the fashion world gets played-out for ya…:-)

The dress looks amazing!
June 8, 2012 at 10:23 am
You’re eyes on style and fashion are never cynical. This what I really love about you and what I think is innovative about your approach. But I see something very cynical in this girl with her Upper West Side allure accessorized with an IPhone and a baby.

Oh this a great shot! She looks so cool, yet so feminine and lovely.
What a great picture…….but nowadays all necks are bent to that (not so) smart phone ! Too bad, I would have liked to see her eyes.
At least, the baby is aware of your presence.
June 8, 2012 at 10:43 am
I’ve often wondered if I’d ever see a photo of a mother and child on this site. I love how this photos captures this mother multitasking (smartphone, grocery shopping, taking baby for a stroll) while looking chic and comfortable.
I love the color of the jacket and the dress! But I’m not sure for the shoes…

June 8, 2012 at 10:48 am
I love the woman and child. She is gorgeous, and the child is sweet. Looking this great with a baby can’t be easy, but she makes it look so. Congrats.
June 8, 2012 at 10:54 am
Wonderful picture! I’ve always believed that elegance is best captured in the style of simplest moments…
And the baby? Please…! Totally adorable how he looked STRAIGHT into the camera :)
June 8, 2012 at 10:56 am
Cute ! I like the flip flops
June 8, 2012 at 11:02 am
Can’t people look up from their phones when they know they’re having their picture taken? They’re not fooling anyone. That’s my comment.
This image is so romantic.
This is a modern classic.

June 8, 2012 at 12:04 pm
I always wondered if people shot up front like that actually don’t care about the photographer or they are posing with their phone or acting as if the photographer wasn’t there for the sake of the picture …I hope it is the last option. The shot is great, but it would have been even better with a look at the camera or something else except the phone…I feel that the I-am-standing-looking-at-my-smartphone pose is often hiding the potential feeling a picture…
Dominique makes a very interesting point and I am surprised that nobody else has noticed the somewhat cynical possibility of this photo.
However, this photo only represents a snapshot of this family’s day and, of course, she is going to look at her phone at some point in the day.
I only hope I can be that stylish when I have children.

Love that wrapped version of a sock bun.
And that baby, is that the royal wave of Queen Elizabeth I see?
Oddly enough, this image reminds me of a mystery Sikh on Queen Elizabeth’s royal barge as it sailed down the Thames to mark the monarch’s diamond jubilee.

Looks like the baby is ready to be photographed. Love her sandals…
Thank you for posting a stylish mom. It takes a lot of confidence and self respect to embrace motherhood in such a visible way.
I love how ‘together,’ feminine, yet relaxed her look is. Dressing ‘put together’ always helped me feel work-ready when I worked in an ad agency. Now, as full-time mom, the same holds true.

I absolutely hate flip flops, especially in a city. The bottoms of your feet get filthy! With all the sandal options out there….please! Last summer I vowed to only wear them as house shoes or beach shoes. Otherwise, love the cardigan.
June 8, 2012 at 2:40 pm
AT LAST! I was just about to believe that there are no mums with kids in NY. I can’t wait for some more pics proving that girls with toddlers can also be chic!

“Flip flops”?! I just died a little bit inside. Those are Valentino yet they’re being casually mentioned like they’re Havaianas!
Being a nanny myself, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was one (or a babysitter) as well. We’re not all slumpy, ill dressed gals :)

Her shoes .. very playful.
June 8, 2012 at 4:10 pm
something should be said for the fact that longchamps bags have now twice been the silent player in the background of photos this week – a classic accessory!
Pretty and chic mama!

Gorgeous picture, the young and classy mom, beautiful yet simple. This photo is worth of a cover. The baby is just too cute!! Try and get in touch with this young mom and shoot her and the baby for a fashion mag cover. It”s a winner! Congrats
June 8, 2012 at 4:34 pm
What if she’s the nanny (or someone else who has been asked to take care of the baby) and not the mom?
June 8, 2012 at 4:35 pm
So lovely I agree is she didn’t had that smart-phone on the photo it could be a perfect representation of the 50′s, but that is what give it the edgy feeling !
June 8, 2012 at 4:47 pm
Modern day priorities – geez…Oh – is there a baby in that stroller?

If I put that on, I’d look like the biggest loser on Seventh. My hair would be bedraggled. I’d have spit-up on my red cardigan and that skinny belt + my shape is a nonono!
However, my baby would make up for all of it.
June 8, 2012 at 6:29 pm
Subtle, stylish, and an effortless hairstyle….and homage to the red cardigan!!
June 8, 2012 at 6:36 pm
I love her hairstyle above all else.
June 8, 2012 at 6:57 pm

June 8, 2012 at 7:20 pm
Do not see too many mom’s that look that put together are you sure she is the momma and not the nanny..
June 8, 2012 at 8:23 pm
That’s a nanny. A great looking nanny, but that’s a nanny.
June 8, 2012 at 9:11 pm
She is so cool , she is elegant , i think in Charlotte to ¨Sex and the City¨…
June 8, 2012 at 9:39 pm
To all the critics, I thought I’d share a few thoughts that go through my mind every time I get dressed to got out with my baby. It begins with, “How much time do I have, will my clothing survive drool, chewed up food, milk spit up, a wriggly baby, and can I get to my ankles to buckle straps, all while holding a 21 lbs baby, my own bag and a baby bag.
Whoever she is, she is lovely and living life.
June 8, 2012 at 9:43 pm
Is that the Mommy or the Nanny? I vote Nanny. I hope she’s texting Mommy!
June 8, 2012 at 9:59 pm
Its funny, its takes the same amount of effort to put a simple dress on, a little makeup and fix your hair as its does to put on sweats. I have 3 kids, in nursing school, 2 cats and a dog and always take at least 10 minutes to look decent. Moms deserve to feel good about themselves, no excuses. Thanks for the picture!

Great shot! At last, a photo of a Mother Woman. And who has style. Please more of these. I would love to see some photos of glamorous pregnant women too! A celebration of Woman, in all her forms (young, mature, Mama … now Mama-to-Be?! …).

Such a cute duo!!! Amazing picture and i love her sandals!
June 9, 2012 at 6:29 am
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it! Scott I am an avid, check twice a day reader of both yours and Garance’s blogs and I think this is the first shot I have ever seen with a mother and pram! This resonates particularly for as most days of the week this IS me! And every day I face the challenge of not losing myself completely within the role of being a mother to two young children and I try to use fashion and the way I present myself to help remain connected to the world in some way. Both of your blogs are a constant source of inspiration for this. Some days it works better than others I must admit, but on those days when I am at risk of feeling somewhat invisible as a person and confined to a pram-pushing-mum stereotype, being able to come home and see your stylish images helps me to feel like I might still be little bit in touch with the world. Wow, what a ramble, but just love this shot. And your work! Thank you!

June 9, 2012 at 12:05 pm
I’m pretty sure there is nothing more classically beautiful than this. This photo must be in an advertisement or print at some point. It’s absolutely perfect. Thank you for capturing this 2012 moment of a mother and child, in fashion.
Great looking mom with simple-yet-chic style. The dress is by Hennes and Mauritz… Just bought it myself the other day.

I don’t know why but for me the way the baby is posed ruins the effortlessness of this shot, had it been asleep or looking away it may not have clashed with the general feel of the photo

Scott, A real Betty Draper and ahead of this weekend’s Mad Men finale. Love it!
June 9, 2012 at 11:26 pm
She just looks like a ballerina to me. Her stance, her bun, her long neck. Usually I hate babies. But that one is so chubby and the hand salute is sweet. Of course given a mom that pretty its probably good genetics. She just looks so sweet and preppy. Somehow a perfect counterpart to the gorgeous woman in the zip shorts in the last picture. Because both are very preppy but in very different ways.
June 9, 2012 at 11:34 pm
Those sandals are GORGEOUS!!!! Anyone thats talking them down; Follow these instructions; Take the hard wired part of your brain that says “no flip flops” and loosen it up. Look again. Any better? (Just joking. No offense intended.) Those are very pretty and delicate.
June 10, 2012 at 3:32 am
Amazing photo! It´s so pretty when mother can dress like this. In Slovakia, you would probably find just nervous bad looking mothers(with possibly small exception).

I think the woman is so cute!
The red cardigan becomes her.
I don’t think she is the baby’s mother, because she looks young.
She has a good figure!
I love this photo!!
Love the pic, the mother looks awesomely good, meanwhile the baby is like: what´s up?

The more time goes by, the more feminine I’ve become. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved dresses, etc. However, with age (I’m 36…), I definitely have more confidence in my fashion choices, and more confidence to dare.
And, even more so since I had my daughter in 2009!
So, I totally relate to this photo. The woman is very chic and feminine, without overdoing it. Nice, feminine and subtle – the way I like it.

Guys, she IS the mom. She’s also my best friend and I can assure you, she’s ALWAYS this effortlessly elegant. She was born this way… and it’s obvious that Javi inherited her style. :) Great photo! Love you guys.

Oh look…unbelieveably overpriced flip-flops. Lovely image however.

Adorable and cute dress and it matches great with the red.
Check out tips on color coordination :)

Beautiful! I’m always hesistant to buy neutrals because they seem so boring, but I think I need to just do it and pair them with pops of color like the red sweater and look awesome like this hot mama!

Wow!! Beautiful!! She is stylish and slender, usually don’t see mom!! I love her dress and flip-flops :)

To make this outfit look like it’s from the fifites, about six inches would have to be added to the hem.
The woman’s outfit is perfect. She is one of those gals who looks fresh and neat on the hottest day of the year–so put together. It’s a skill!!

aawWwWww, i want to bite her little feet-yum yum yum!!!

As a father of two, I take this as an ode to all badly-sleeping mums and dads who still find the stamina to ‘make an effort’. My only ‘bone to pick’ here would be the bow-decorated sandals/flip flops. Comfortable as they are, this dress and cardigan combo deserve more!

I love the fact that there is something very 1950′s -60′s about this look. She looks like perfection and I love the coloured cardigan that ads the umph to her outfit. Can’t help but hope I feel as put together as she looks if I have children one day…

Hello to all (Hi MARY and DAD saw your posts up there). Monica is my stepmom and this is my adorable baby brother Javier. Sorry to disappoint: not the nanny. Sandals are VALENTINO and yes: she makes being a mom look effortlessly fabulous!

Hardly a disappointment. It makes the whole thing even more charming! Your family is lovely and so very picturesque.

Absolutely normal. Sucha amom youcould find anywhere in the world.
July 22, 2012 at 11:36 pm
Very true, although I seldom see such pretty mom and baby. And yet its a wonderful, inspiring picture, and its a striking bright sweater over a very feminine dress. Even if its not so exclusive or outrageous. Its fun to look at.

Amo esse tipo de look, moda usual!

A stylish mama. More mums need to pay attention to this, and leave the sweats for the Gym. Good pic.
