She’s dressed quite awkwardly and yet she looks so cool. Perhaps it’s the bike, or the I-don’t-really-care attitude that make it work.

Another example of things I like individually, but not together. I see the shirt with a boyfriend jean and a cute, bright sneaker. The skirt with a tank and sandals. The bright blue socks with the shoes – a cool look – I see with a dressy top+skirt, or dress, or skinny jean.

I’ve noticed a trend in your photography Scott – you used to take more photos of the obviously fab; now, your subjects question what style really is. Not necessarily “fabulous”, but different, which sparks dialogue. Some of the subjects look so decidedly un-stylish I wonder if you’re testing us!!!

OMG! I had an incredibly similar skirt when I was little!! I love your latest fashion photos, but I truly appreciate when you feature people dressed in pieces that are unique. Most fashion bloggers end up wearing the same pieces all the time, and therefore, looking all the same. Unique, personal style is a becoming a lost art form, especially with people shopping constantly instead of taking care of what they already have and challenging themselves to wear it in interesting new ways. That’s what I try to do in my blog every day! Thanks for posting!

this is a cold mess. i’m all for a good thriftstore look but this one is lacking grace in proportion, color and fit. it might have been cute if she were nine but as an adult a little bit more consideration is needed – especially for a thriftstore look. i’ve known and have been both, a woman who rides on a bike in the city and who specializes in the thrift shopping.

I now realize that an A-line skirt below the knee is hard to wear. It tends to look frumpy. An A-line skirt at the knee (or to the ankle) (or cheerleader mini) is generally more flattering.

She should be wearing khaki pedal pushers or even jean cutoffs, with retro Adidas tennis shoes or something.

I think its the wrinkled top that doesn’t work and makes the whole thing look “laundry day”. Put a different top on it and the booties, bright blue socks and even the skirt would work. Not a high fashion look, but a very individual one.

That length, cut, drape.. the silhouette of that skirt is so unseemly. I don’t care for it but I guess I understand the appeal to some. I agree with lizpr, some of these shots seem to make us question what the definition of “style” actually is.

  119. Laura

    May 7, 2012 at 10:04 pm

    Boring!

Frumpy a-line skirts with just as frumpy ankle boots are not flattering at all. Her outfit is nothing special and definitely not cool. I think that just because it’s posted on this blog everyone is immediately caught up in believing that it must be cool and great.

It can’t be possible that every single post about this image is positive. Can these posts be a place were differing opinions are possible or is it that the team at the sartorialist like to control the way we perceive looks and therefore only post the thoughts that are in praise of an image?

An on that premise I guess that means this post won’t be posted. let’s embrace both the diversity of style AND most importantly, the diversity of thoughts.

That skirt is very 70´s. I remember wearing things like that when I was a child back them. Nowadays, and in an adult, looks a bit odd.

By far my favorite photo. This person is cool. Very cool.
The rare, creative individual who knows what she likes &
puts it together well- for herself. It’s unique
self-expression without a single false note.
No doubt she has fantastic style – all her own.
Is there any other kind? Personally, i love the retro
skirt for biking & the juxtaposition of girlie with tomboy.
Strikes an intriguinging balance within a mutlti-faceted
context. She seems unpretentious, creative, intelligent &
complex. I think the outfit, on her, (which she probably did just
throw together) is adorable, sexy, tough, sweet,
provocative & mysterious, i.e. inviolate to labeling.

^ Wow “Violante”, you certainly judge a LOT about a person based on what they wear–i.e. kitschy sailboat skirt.

I could reverse the “unique, creative, intelligent, complex” with pretentious dime-a-dozen hipster following the current DIY-meets-nautical trend. But you know, I don’t really judge the entirety of someone’s character on their clothing.

^ Wow “Violante”, you certainly judge a LOT about a person based on what they wear–i.e. kitschy sailboat skirt = more substantive character?

I could reverse the “unique, creative, intelligent, complex” (really, now??) with pretentious dime-a-dozen hipster following the current DIY-meets-nautical trend. But you know, I don’t really judge the entirety of someone’s character on their clothing.

This woman is wearing what she likes. I love her style, the way I see it, she is showing a gentle disregard for fashion conventions without being ostentatious or rebellious.
