Yup, once again you’re right, cyclists are chicest of them all.
I just had a short essay read on the radio today about being in my 30s and never learning how to ride a bicycle. When you live in a big urban centre, where everyone knows how to ride, you definitely feel out of the loop.
Anyway this man looks fantastic, and I love these pics!
What a lovely photo! He looks such a charming man as well! Bet he has plenty of stories to tell! Great dresser too – very suave and sophisticated and beautifully co-ordinated style. Well captured Scott!
This is my ultimate style icon right here. The shoes, the gloves, the perfect coat, the co-ordinate hat…AND the fantastic beard, stache, hair….I want to be this guy!
It’s nice to see characters like this. He rides a bike, reads an actual newspaper, and dresses like he’s “stuck in the past.” The best part of it all is that you can tell he’s not trying to be particularly fashionable or different in any way. He just is the way he is. I think that’s what we all strive for–to be able to look “good” without even trying.
With that excellent posture on (and off) the bike, it wouldn’t surprise me that he raced in the Giro.
By the way, back in the late 80′s– mid 90′s ,when I spent most of my days on a bike in NYC, there was an elder gent with gray hair and beard who ALWAYS rode his bike against traffic. He wore a purple tie-dyed t-shirt, so he was called Purple Man.
I really love this man beard, shoes and pants. His pants are cut perfectly just to let us see how beautiful are his shoes. You seem to catch well beardy men, but NOT with the average beard so I wish I could see more of them. Thank you for your beautiful pictures.
@ Pic #2…”Well, if you insist on following me young man, at least tell me who you are and why you feel the need to chase me hither and thither about the streets of Milano…” At least this is what I imagined he said to you after you snapped the pic. I LOVE this! More charming men on bicycles, please! :)
A true sartorialist – a conscious interpreter of dress codes and conventions, but also quite dashing – especially when he gets away from you on his bicycle.
I have seen this man in Milan, only on his bicycle, several times in different seasons. There is no one I would more like to talk to about clothes, or more exactly see his closet, than him.
This guy is so cool it makes my teeth hurt. But next time you see him – if you can catch him – tell him to raise his saddle – he’s gonna mess up his knees.
You ought to show a pic of Bradley Wiggins – British pro cyclist, Top Tuor de France finisher, Olympic medallist, Mod, stylish bloke both in and out of lycra. Possibly faster than Guliano, but no beard.
I have the same camel corduroys! Well, not the same, as they’re from my mom’s closet and probably from India. Wish I had such cool shoes to pair them with. Or those funky glasses! When you spot such stylish gentlemen on bicycles, you must have to give quite a chase to take a picture! At least your job keeps you fit (:
Handsome – but isn’t it perhaps condescending to call him young when he so clearly is not? He is beautiful without reference to age at all, but his age must be a reference let us be accurate. All of us age; there’s no shame in that.
oh, i remember him! he was in condé nast traveler in a milan story… oct. 2011, p. 115. full shot of him and his bicycle looking impeccable. shot by julien capmeil.
