Must just add – Mary Quant is being interviewed on the radio and talks about finding Peter Pan collars in a catering suppliers (circa 1962) which she promptly wears over a black sweater!
Martina T. Your grandmother is positively inspiring. Last week I purchased a tan Bavarian Alpine Hat, complete with pheasant feathers, to keep the sun out of my eyes. A Tail wagging Golden retriever pulled a matron down the street in my direction. I thought it was the German Golden that I had already passed that the pulling retriever was urging her master towards. But, no, it was the feathers on my cap. When we closed the distance, and I said, Perhaps the previous dog is in heat? No, she said, my dog is a working dog, the feathers in your hat were the pull. If I hadn’t held her she would have gone on point at your feet! This really happened. So today, I went back and bought the black felt hat from Saltzburg, complete with brush, and a different pheasant. My sister will knock me unconscious on her next visit and drive home with it, I am sure. Thanking your grandmother, ‘in advance’ of more inspiration!
I seriously doubt this photograph was taken before 1945. There was a war going on? It would be interesting to see photos of “street fashion” in Europe, during the war years.
maybe it’s even later than 1940-50, but the picture was in a box in which it was written 1940-50, so i thought that. I’ve got other pictures of my granma!

^I also thought Hepburn when I saw this. I love it when a picture inspires the imagination. If I taught a writing course, I’d encourage students to write a short story around this pic. Amazing!
I grew up in the 50′s & 60′s in a small conservative east coast town. One of the great influnences in my life was the ‘before her time” mother of now renown designer, David Easton (AD 100,2012, again), The day i meant Mrs Easton is fondly seared in my brain forever. She was sitting in her classically designed Georgian LR full of memrbilia, modern art, exotic rugs, reading the newspaper in a stunning combination of Chanel and her personal stylish layering, while smoking a pipe. I was tagging along at about age 10 with David’s little sister, Carla and my big sister Anita, who were in their early teens. Mrs. Easton exuded that same confidence of style that Martine’s grandmother shows. She was way ahead of her time, in style and confidence, and I was smitten! David was off studying architecture/design at Yale and in Europe, not yet world famous, but a clearly rising star. Mrs. Easton and her stunning/quirky. yet liveable home full of life and comfort and interest and her exquisite, comfy porch decor (of which David went on to reproduce some pieces for Waldo’s) forever changed me. I knew then I would have to work in the design/ fashion world, and more importantly,relaized at that moment a woman could be free and independent., and had options, beyond teaching, nursing and secretarial work., the primary options available to women then. I was changed forever that day by Mrs. Easton, and went on to spend a good chunk of my life in fashion design/buying /styling because of her.
Martina T, I’ll just bet your grandmother had that kind of influence on girls/ young women she encountered in those early years after the war when a woman of style and independence really made a statment about lifes’ possibilities! Bravo to her and thank you for sharing, Please send more! and thanks Scott for posting such wonders!
