Alright, one small nit pick on the photos lately, and I don’t know if this is your choice or the choice of your subjects: lately a lot of ladies are putting their bags front and center in the photograph. It makes them look as though they think their bags are more important than they are. The bag is an accessory, not the story, and I don’t like the way this woman holds it in front of her like armour. Other women in your photos hold the bag in their hand and let it fall against their leg or to the side, and that is much more real to me, both in how I would walk down the street with a beg like that, and in showing the woman and her choice of clothes, not just the Big Bag. I’m tired of status bags, and while big bags are fine, I hate it when they obscure your photographs and your point about personal style.

As long as we’re talking poses, I’m curious about the prevalence of the pigeon-toed, for lack of a more gracious term, stance on the women here and elsewhere, with the toes closer together than the heels in some configuration. It doesn’t seem to be a stance people spontaneously favor (none of the men seem to do it), and it’s turning up a lot in red carpet shots and such–is this a photographer suggestion these days, or just a posing trend in some areas?
Love, love, love! I totally agree with the comment that she looks “quietly beautiful,” in expression and clothing. This is “second-look beautiful” to me, the best kind! My favorite bits are the grey tights and the brown gloves with the buckle.

sorry sart, i beg to differ. me and my girlfriends started wearing grey cotton hoisery 3 years ago and we started mixing it up with marc jacobs platforms 2 years ago after ditching vintage chanel flats. peacoats were always in the mix and some of us got the ysl muse bag. anyways, i am happy to know that i was on to something a while back. have a great weekend.

I like everything about this except the bag. One because it’s overscaled and two, because it’s black. A different color might have been nice. I think in a decade or two we’ll look at photos of this time period and say “Remember those huge bags everyone used to carry?! Ha!”
The photograph itself is great but…I am kind of over all the photographs of industry people. Of course Sylvana’s outfit is decent and on trend…she works at Vogue. The whole look is slightly contrived and I am sick of that bag. Shoot people with a more individual sense of style.
I couldn’t tell if it was showing off or hiding – putting the bag right in front of the hips and all. I certainly would feel the need to hide if you (or anyone) wanted to take my photo on the street. I just wish these ladies could feel what a compliment it is, and could put the bag down, just a little.

I think that within this collection of photographs there is a lovely mix of “trend” and other sorts of more eccentric style, this particular photo just happens to appear a little more main stream than some of your other shots, Sart. As for Sylvana, it’s kind of hard not to look amazing when you have a closet of FABULOUS shoes and bags at your disposal, don’t you think?
Sart, I doubt that you’ll post this, but, it seems that recently your responses to people’s posts have become pretty snarky. What’s up with that? Telling someone to grow up? Wow. I think a lot of people do care about whether clothes are “on trend”, especially if they work in fashion. Come on. I’ve noticed that many of your readers prefer to see images of people who don’t work in fashion. Yes, there’s often a big difference in terms of expressing personal style and you know it.

Sorry but if you going to say “The whole look is slightly contrived and I am sick of that bag.” well that is just plain rude – this young lady is not here to please us – she did me a favor letting me take her photo so if you can get something from it great but if not then just move on for be prepared to bring something a little more than “slightly contrived”
if you think it is so easy to look great with a closet full of clothes (why are you convinced she has a closet full of clothes) then why do so many socialites and actresses look so bad?
Perhaps people can try to remember that the subjects of the photos are most likely going to read the comments about themselves- perhaps this will encourage people to be kinder, or at least to give an explanation of their comment rather than saying “this is contrived” with nothing about why or how it is contrived.
I love the blue/purple combo. I always have–I remember reading about it once in a book as a child and it’s always sort of stuck in the back of my head. The only thing that confuses me is why people insist upon calling her coat navy. The blue of her coat is a much brighter blue than navy and it’s the whole reason it looks so fabulous with the purple. And the grey tights. Navy would have been too blech and safe.
I sort of wish the bag were brown so it could be a complete rejection of the easy black, but then you fall into the too much match-y match-y land I guess if it were brown.
um, well, i think it would be fair to say that this woman is wearing a number of rather trendy pieces in a somewhat refreshing and visually interesting way, chiefly because of the color combination. there is nothing particularly new going on here except for the creative and playful way she has put the outfit together, which is to say that it is thoroughly new, and quite charming to boot.
i do think that the bag comments are valid — it’s no accident that the trophy bags are front and center in all of these shots, and i don’t think she’s simply cold. i think she likes her big chloe bag and is delighted that she owns it. young women all over this city (and the rest of the world) are buying $2,000 handbags because you are nothing without one. they have become the new security blanket and you can forge ahead quite bravely when brandishing an enormous leather satchel with the right label on it.
sure, there have always been status symbols in life and in fashion, but i honestly don’t recall a time when so many people felt so desperate to own them at any cost. at the very least they were objects that you aspired to — now it seems that they are mandatory and necessary for everyone, at every stage of life.
and yes, hal rubenstein is who you really, really want to see more of, but that’s one of the things that makes this such a cool shot.
YSL Muse bag. Been copied to death. This is probably not a fake. But as soon as the fakes hit the street the original goes out of style. Except maybe the Birkin – but that´s probably just a matter of time. It bags – soooo has been.
I agree with Sart, A LOT IN FACT. She most certainly did not dress in such a great style, intentionally walking down the road to let herself be photographed by Sart. She must have had the fashion sense and capabilities to even begin to work in Vogue, so you can’t discount her great look in this picture.
She looks great, despite the bag. The colors are lovely and she’s very pretty. That said, I most like the pics of the random, almost-accidental hipsters who don’t have to look fabulous, but do, anyway. Just a preference.

God, she’s just plain pretty and Sart takes a great picture. What’s wrong with that? Add Hal Rubenstein with an age-inappropriate wallet chain–but, lookin’ devilish, one orange cone a few fall leaves, apretty blonde in the distance and you have more than enough reason to post this shot.

This is such a funny photo. I love how it’s actually Hal Rubenstein who is in focus!! When I first looked at this it looked so “grape” (b/c of the blue hue the black bag gives off in the photo), all I could think of was Violet Beauregarde.
But after enlarging the photo…I just love what she did w/ the colors. She looks so classy, yet comfy…and YES, her hair is outstanding! So glad to see she let it hang loose w/ such a put together outfit.
This is most likely coming too late for the post, but I own that bag and the reason it seems to be so prominently displayed is most likely because once you start loading it up it gets very heavy very quickly. It probably just fell like that, I know mine does.

She has perfected the combination of bulky tops and skinny bottoms.
I mean, just imagine how different she would look if her dress were down to her knees or worst, ankles.

Great little outfit – its definately the sum of its parts……
The only think with it is that I think her hair is a bit too long and it sort of drwons her face.

Sart, I doubt that you’ll post this, but, it seems that recently your responses to people’s posts have become pretty snarky. What’s up with that? Telling someone to grow up? Wow. I think a lot of people do care about whether clothes are “on trend”, especially if they work in fashion. Come on. I’ve noticed that many of your readers prefer to see images of people who don’t work in fashion. Yes, there’s often a big difference in terms of expressing personal style and you know it.

Sorry but if you going to say “The whole look is slightly contrived and I am sick of that bag.” well that is just plain rude – this young lady is not here to please us – she did me a favor letting me take her photo so if you can get something from it great but if not then just move on for be prepared to bring something a little more than “slightly contrived”
if you think it is so easy to look great with a closet full of clothes (why are you convinced she has a closet full of clothes) then why do so many socialites and actresses look so bad?

Perhaps people can try to remember that the subjects of the photos are most likely going to read the comments about themselves- perhaps this will encourage people to be kinder, or at least to give an explanation of their comment rather than saying “this is contrived” with nothing about why or how it is contrived.

I love the blue/purple combo. I always have–I remember reading about it once in a book as a child and it’s always sort of stuck in the back of my head. The only thing that confuses me is why people insist upon calling her coat navy. The blue of her coat is a much brighter blue than navy and it’s the whole reason it looks so fabulous with the purple. And the grey tights. Navy would have been too blech and safe.
I sort of wish the bag were brown so it could be a complete rejection of the easy black, but then you fall into the too much match-y match-y land I guess if it were brown.

um, well, i think it would be fair to say that this woman is wearing a number of rather trendy pieces in a somewhat refreshing and visually interesting way, chiefly because of the color combination. there is nothing particularly new going on here except for the creative and playful way she has put the outfit together, which is to say that it is thoroughly new, and quite charming to boot.
i do think that the bag comments are valid — it’s no accident that the trophy bags are front and center in all of these shots, and i don’t think she’s simply cold. i think she likes her big chloe bag and is delighted that she owns it. young women all over this city (and the rest of the world) are buying $2,000 handbags because you are nothing without one. they have become the new security blanket and you can forge ahead quite bravely when brandishing an enormous leather satchel with the right label on it.
sure, there have always been status symbols in life and in fashion, but i honestly don’t recall a time when so many people felt so desperate to own them at any cost. at the very least they were objects that you aspired to — now it seems that they are mandatory and necessary for everyone, at every stage of life.
and yes, hal rubenstein is who you really, really want to see more of, but that’s one of the things that makes this such a cool shot.

I agree with Sart, A LOT IN FACT. She most certainly did not dress in such a great style, intentionally walking down the road to let herself be photographed by Sart. She must have had the fashion sense and capabilities to even begin to work in Vogue, so you can’t discount her great look in this picture.

She looks fabulous and the color combo is gorgeous! As for the bag comments…I have that bag and rarely do I carry it at my side as it gets heavy after awhile. And big bags are perfect for work. There is not one thing wrong with this outfit.

God, she’s just plain pretty and Sart takes a great picture. What’s wrong with that? Add Hal Rubenstein with an age-inappropriate wallet chain–but, lookin’ devilish, one orange cone a few fall leaves, apretty blonde in the distance and you have more than enough reason to post this shot.

I agree that the chocolate shoes make this outfit pop! its so great to see such a mix of colors (blue, purple, grey, brown) and yet they all work! her smile, healthy hair and cute pose make this all work well! I especially am in awe of her long legs and slender ankles…!

This is such a funny photo. I love how it’s actually Hal Rubenstein who is in focus!! When I first looked at this it looked so “grape” (b/c of the blue hue the black bag gives off in the photo), all I could think of was Violet Beauregarde.
But after enlarging the photo…I just love what she did w/ the colors. She looks so classy, yet comfy…and YES, her hair is outstanding! So glad to see she let it hang loose w/ such a put together outfit.

This is most likely coming too late for the post, but I own that bag and the reason it seems to be so prominently displayed is most likely because once you start loading it up it gets very heavy very quickly. It probably just fell like that, I know mine does.

I love this blog! I have been following it since mid 2008. Such a fantastic source of inspiration! Thank you for posting such fabulous photographs. Now regarding this photo in particular — I am going through Decembers of past years up until 2009 and absolutely love this girl's look. I think it still is a fresh and classic look –even over a year later. What do you think?
