What do you think the colors of this photo are?
August 21, 2011 at 12:04 pm
So modern and beautiful – very Lartigue looking!
August 21, 2011 at 12:08 pm
I think their high waisted pants look fabulous, and they both look so elegantly slim and graceful.
August 21, 2011 at 12:15 pm
They are so cool, bohemian, and sexy.
August 21, 2011 at 12:25 pm
Those pants are amazing, as are the hats. Once again, heels in casual settings are featured. I love it!
August 21, 2011 at 12:26 pm
Look bellissimi, in particolare il cappello
August 21, 2011 at 12:39 pm
Absolutely beautiful photograph. Thanks for sharing, Sam.
August 21, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Lovely photo! Thanks for sharing!
August 21, 2011 at 12:46 pm
Beautiful! Love the baggy linen pants.
August 21, 2011 at 12:47 pm
Great !!! So chic !!!!
Was this typical beach wear for that time? The tops show alot of skin while the pants keep it conservative. Maybe this was the fashion transition into true bathing suits with short bottoms.
August 21, 2011 at 12:50 pm
lovely picture and beautiful style. Their outfits create such a nice silhouette, timeless.

Gorgeous! My favorite vintage photo to date.
August 21, 2011 at 1:31 pm
Those pants will never go out of style, but it’s the hats that make the ensembles for me. They may be dressed for a summer day at the beach, and they have their jaunty, bepomponed hats to complete the look.
Great photo, Sam.
August 21, 2011 at 1:47 pm
I absolutely love the high waist pants too. They look amazing then, and now. And look at the tops! They are baring more then any side view of the modern photo. It was stylishly sexy even back then. What lovely looking girls. So slender and graceful. I notice from all the vintage photo that people were indeed far more slender in the last century then they are now. If you took an average photo of a person today they would be sloppy and overweight. Whereas the vintage photos they are beautifully turned out and thin.

Touching picture. I belong to the 40′s. It feels like I’ve been there.

very nice!!! great blog!!!
August 21, 2011 at 2:13 pm
Astonishing that they wear such modern clothes! I wonder if there was a difference between Europe and the US regarding openness of clothing and showing skin…

August 21, 2011 at 2:17 pm
Wow… I love vintage pants and hats

beatiful photo :)
August 21, 2011 at 3:30 pm
Wow! This photo is incredible. I love their style (the hats are amazing!!)
August 21, 2011 at 3:53 pm
Wow, strikes me as unbelievably risque for the times.
Such interesting poses, and serious demeanors. One wonders what has so captured their attention…
August 21, 2011 at 4:04 pm
nice old photos!! :)
August 21, 2011 at 4:20 pm
High-waisted and flowing linen pants. Halter tops. A hat to keep the sun off one’s face. An elegant demeanor.
These two wouldn’t look out of place today at any of the world’s most fashionable beaches or resorts. This photo really illustrates why some things are true classics and will never go out of style.
And love the mid-height heel on the woman wearing the light-colored pants. Just the right touch.

August 21, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Gorgeous women, gorgeous pose, gorgeous outfits…i agree that they seem like they would be amazingly risque for the times. Also amazing that real style never goes out of style, it just gets recycled!
August 21, 2011 at 5:18 pm
Oh my God!!!! This photo is amazing!!!!! These two women are INCREDIBLY sexy. Great photo!
August 21, 2011 at 5:26 pm
Lovely and perfectly on-trend for today.
August 21, 2011 at 5:52 pm
I agree with lintmag: “very Lartigue looking”.
August 21, 2011 at 5:53 pm
Love those pants! and the hats of course!!
August 21, 2011 at 7:08 pm
Love the heels in the sand. And the ball fringe on the hats.

So lovely, I would wear this today… I want those hats badly
August 21, 2011 at 7:30 pm
Oh my… these girls are achingly cool. This picture shows that great style transcends time.
There are so many amazing things about this: androgynous, relaxed tailoring at the beach, a touch of sexiness with a bare midriff, whimsical accessorising, loose curls in the wind…etc
August 21, 2011 at 7:47 pm
oh so beautiful! old style is best
August 21, 2011 at 7:53 pm
OMG the best shoes at the shoreline timeless thanks
August 21, 2011 at 7:57 pm
there style is a mixture of 20′s 30′s and 40′s Not such a hard edge as true 40′s just love the sisters
August 21, 2011 at 7:59 pm
i think they slpped on trousers over their bathing suits
August 21, 2011 at 8:09 pm
Wow! Very forward for their times but just goes to show how style transcends time. This could be now.
The photo exudes calm yet an intense sense of sensuality as well.
August 21, 2011 at 8:11 pm
WOW! This photo is stunning! Look at their style!!! Those pants, hats, (those waistlines)! They look so gorgeous.
August 21, 2011 at 8:15 pm
What a wonderful picture!
How good looking they were!
I just loved their sexy outifts.
August 21, 2011 at 8:20 pm
Beautiful pose and outfits! But these were not risque’ outfits for these times. In the States we became much more stupidly puritan in the last 30 years. Talk about regression!
August 21, 2011 at 9:43 pm
Beautiful picture. They look pretty, elegant and also in a way ‘sexy’ because they show some skin.
La Petite Marmoset
August 21, 2011 at 10:55 pm
I love the hats!
August 21, 2011 at 11:25 pm
I wonder if their clothes are homemade…it would explain why the tops are so risque. The pants look like pieces my great aunt made.
August 22, 2011 at 1:01 am
wow, they look AMAZINGLY modern….and so graceful…beautiful girls, beautiful pic
August 22, 2011 at 1:35 am
This is a great photo. The pants, the hats, the halter tops, their expressions and the wind-blown tendrils of hair all add up to portray a simple innocence of youth and winsome loveliness. Thank you for posting!
August 22, 2011 at 1:40 am
looks like miuccia might have had a scope around in your drawers before doing her SS 11 show ;)
August 22, 2011 at 2:05 am
Great photo. Their choice of clothing worn today would still be as fashionable as they were then.
August 22, 2011 at 2:39 am
Stunning pic ! These twins are sexy and romantic, kind of Marguerite Duras’s Mekong mood.
August 22, 2011 at 3:37 am
At first glance, even though i could see it was a vintage photo, I swear I thought it was Garance and one of her fashion freinds in Montauk or French seaside.
Palazzo pants never go out of style. Beautiful photo, styles, gals!
And yes, everyone was thin then, All food was real food..organic before there was such a word/distinction between real and fake/treated food.
I was born in ’51, my mom in ’25, Dad ’24.
Nothing was more exciting than party/dance night and watching the size 2 ‘gals’ arrive in all their glamour, and smelling their intoxicating , heavy perfumes from the top of the staircase. I swear, i remember everyone of their fabulous cocktail dresses, and the rare evening wear palazzo pants, furs, laughter, and the sound of cocktail glasses clinking. Just like it was a party at Don and Betty’s. As a special treat on party night, we got to eat those fancy new frozen TV dinnners. The beginning of the end, but boy were they ever neat..with that yummy apple crisp in center.
Thanks for the memory, Sam, just wonderful!
And, of course, thanks to you Scott. Keep ‘em comng.

Great picture !
these casual widelegged pants look so elegant on them somehow
new outfit post !
August 22, 2011 at 8:50 am
I absolutely love your vintage photos section. It definitely shows that fashion is something but style is even more. I absolutely adore the high pants and their hats but above all what I love the most is their attitude, I don’t feel this photo is posed. Elegance is a gift:)

Graceful, flowing rhythms in this photo with the perfect proportions of the subjects and their clothes.
August 22, 2011 at 10:36 am
beaaauuutiful!!!!!! they both look so regal.
August 22, 2011 at 11:58 am
Vintage sideboob! Awesome!
August 22, 2011 at 1:25 pm
The deep creases and hats make me believe the lovely linen pants are of the Thai variety. High waist pants and cropped tops are a product of the 40s; we should expect nothing less. I don’t think it’s the clothes that are particularly modern, I feel it is the wind swept damp hair, sun soaked skin and the intense glare these women have as they uniformly pose for the picture. Like they were aware of the photo’s destiny as a revered feature on The Sartorialist and they did not want to disappoint.

I love this…. clearly, they are sisters, but each has her own embellishments and spin… your vintage posts are my favorites.

Stunning and very sexy. The combination of the high waist trousers and rather tiny tops (vintage sideboob indeed!), the hats, the shoes, the poses of these two lovely women, an amazing photograph!

This is an absolutely stunning photo. They’re both so beautiful and I like how they are not directly facing the camera- so classic.

August 22, 2011 at 9:57 pm
LOVE IT – Nina is totally serving fierce – I can’t even pay attention to what she’s wearing.
August 23, 2011 at 12:28 am
On second view, in such an obviously unposed photo, it is absolutely amazing how the (very unusual) position of their arms and hands is exactly the same!
August 23, 2011 at 4:43 am
Such elegant and beautiful girls.
August 23, 2011 at 6:45 am
This photo is just perfect.
August 23, 2011 at 7:36 am
cool comfy pants!!! nice one!!
August 23, 2011 at 4:08 pm
Beautiful women! The girl right remind me – “en passant” – Jodie Foster or Maria Medeiros, both actresses.
August 23, 2011 at 6:18 pm
wonderful picture of times past… it actually brought a tear to my eye thinking of a young woman, full of wonder, who eventually aged… yet, probably, still full of that same wonder…

I love that the great-aunt is wearing heels on the beach. Glamorous and innocent all at once are these two.
August 26, 2011 at 5:58 am
wow! amazing picture!
August 26, 2011 at 5:59 pm
@ annabella; Thank you for the sharing that great memory! I can just imagine you kids watching the fun from upstairs wondering about the time you were a grown up and got to stay up for the party!
@Modcat So people at the time did indeed dress like this commonly. I kind of thought that was the case, as I had seen halter tops and palazzo pants together in films about the 40′s era. Well, why not, looking as good as this! But good to have you confirm.
August 28, 2011 at 12:51 pm
Love, love this photo… lovely girls, great figures, timeless beauty. And oh those clothes!
January 7, 2012 at 2:05 pm
I imagine these were pretty daring outfits for the time….but like Madcat says maybe they were not…great photo any how and really looks like the two girls have something on their minds…..

Such great photos and……so so sexy for the time!
January 22, 2012 at 9:58 pm
Quick correction, Nina was my grandmother and this photo is circa 1930 when the girls were teenagers. I believe this is a beach near Galveston. The Creswell sisters lived in Waco, Texas at the time. Nina was a skilled seamstress and made many lovely outfits for me when I was a child. I miss her.
November 30, 2012 at 1:05 pm
thanks for the update mom!
March 27, 2012 at 9:11 pm
The pants are great but I’m totally surprised by the crop tops!
September 17, 2012 at 12:50 am
I dont think they’re showing their waists, on close inspection it doesnt look like skin but some sort of white belt…it appears theyre wearing those pants over full bathing suits.
