I don’t know is it the picture that makes this man look so great and somehow even mysterious or it’s just his style that makes him a real dream man. Love it!
I hate to admit it but that guy looks infinitely cooler than me. Really great location for this subject too. Looks kind of like a cleaner cut ewan mcgregor
Did you really snap this photo at Yale? When did students start wearing jackets to class again? Very Ivy League, though, the hair, the glasses, the pose.
Lovely. Just lovely. Nice to see standards are still being maintained in New Haven. Drives home what Birmingham wrote a few years ago:
According to the best possible source – the Social Establishment itself – the most important college, socially, is unquestionably Yale. Princeton has a lot of glamour, but Yale is solider.
what! what! i go to school here, this is right out back from our art studios and i stand out there everyday! when did this happen! why wasn’t i there! and who is this person? he’s not an art student…but no matter. he looks great! we’re bringing sexy back at yale!
He fits definitely my pattern of predation… I think his hair does it. The cut and the colour. The grey jacket. The age of course. Don´t know if he was that cool without the glasses. But I´d try to find out about it!
Great shot. Good looking kid. The clothes really don’t matter on this one. I think I’m seeing an unbuttoned cuff on jacket, if so, I’m satisfied that it may be more legit than it looks in this particular pose/stance.
Great portrait. This charming man… Classic pure style. Love his mischievous glare penetrating from behind those perfect glasses! (A very young) Jason Bateman meets Holden Caufield.
All the prep boys just continue to dress as they did at prep school. That goes on at Princeton, Harvard, Yale and even Columbia. If he’s at Yale he’ll have a backpack somewhere nearby.
I mean it’s just prep moving through Ivy League. It’s pretty standard.
Hey, Sart … head on up to Columbia… you know, Morningside Heights, it’s still a part of Manhattan, you’ll find that there as well, just not as often.
You always wait for us to come to you and well, face it, the preppies just don’t get out that much.
I love the way he’s wearing the glasses, and not the other way round, if you know what I mean… I see too many ‘statement’ glasses on men nowadays, and it always seem to: “*uh* lets plan my outfit around my glasses today”
He is a wonderful example of the confident, sexy, nerdy guy that doesn’t get much play. I mostly see guys working the high water pants, small jacket, glasses nerd-look (Wes Anderson). This is much classier and not forced.
I’m gonna go with the Holden Caulfield take on this one.
“The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it.”
—Original book jacket copy of The Catcher in the Rye, possibly partially written by Salinger (so say wikipedia with a sited source, but I liked the quote all the same).
I love the coat, jeans and glasses. But I have to disagree that this is ivy league style. Ivy league is america’s native aristocrat style, and this guy’s unkempt hair and collarless shirt make it seem like working-man chic. If he combed his hair and put on an oxford-cloth button-down, then I might call it ivy league.
Oh god – he is heaven! Did you get his contact details Sart? He looks like a dream! The glasses, the blazer smoking.. I could actually gawp at him all day long – in fact maybe I should never meet him, I might freak him out.
His style is so beautiful that it is the kind of style I would want to replicate as a woman.
oh man. i usually can’t stand this type of boy, but everything about this picture is perfect. he does the look well. and that is the best come-hither expression i’ve seen in awhile!
really everyone? i respectfully disagree. a jacket, glasses and a cigarette, he’s clearly first in line for an arcade fire concert or a corey feldman / kd lang look-alike competition.
this look is pure class. nothing about what he’s wearing screams for attention but upon closer inspection his choices are distinct and razor-sharp. great jacket. fitted without being too snug or awkward. the fabric has a lightness to it without looking flimsy or cheap. classic but relaxed. what’s the name of this type of shirt w/out a collar? always loved these kind of shirts on guys. very sexy. the piping sort of detail at the waist of his jacket is a nice touch. also those glasses are fresh. the shape is almost a subtle cat-eye. the subtley and lack of flash is what made this look stand out for me. great eye as usual!
when will fashion dispose of the idea that smoking is attractive? i have yet to meet someone who i would consider more beautiful being a smoker. this fellow is just another example. he would appear a lot more confident and sexy (to me) without it.
I love this photo because it looks like his style or what he is wearing was really not on his mind that day, but instead he is the student in deep thought after a tough lecture needing a smoke break wondering what he is going to write for his final thesis.
i have to admit, most of these comments made me laugh hard.
i think ted, up top, got it right.
as for the person who said that this young man does not have the “ivy league look” either you know nothing about the boarding school/ivy league culture or you are just being facetious. if you were going after the joke end of it, well i admit it, you did make me laugh.
the one thing i would like to see is that we stop dismissing sartorial styles we can’t relate to as being criminal/lame/thugish. i have never seen the sart post even one pic where i thought the man looked like he was going to descend into delinquency.
if anything, the guys look good natured/sweet/fun or even better yet, as if they could be the life of the party due to their personality. but never, criminal. i might not love the look of this particular sartorial story, but i appreciate the fact that the sart took the time to capture it, reminding me that this style also exist.
Obviously no-one else is a fan of the BBC Doctor Who series – this young man is chanelling David Tennant (the Scottish actor playing the current Doctor Who) and doing a fine imitation. Bring it on lads – more like this I say.
As good as he looks, the jacket is just too tight, he clearly cannot raise his arms and he must be uncomfortable… you should be able to move comfortably in your clothes…
1st impression: combo of ewan M. and Toby M (both scots by heritage, both have better teeth than actual local scots)
2nd, stronger impression: this guy is the spitting image of the American Beauty film character Ricky Fitz! You know, the kid with the gay dad who dealt pot and made movies? This is him at college. I was at Yale (JE ’96) when Rumpus published a beautiful people issue: it proved the truth: hot kids go to Chico State & studying is what ugly people must resort to.
How do you get people to pose for you?? whenever i ask, they get all awkward and fidgety. Good subjects? or maybe you’re just such a talented photographer, lol.
He looks really great. the whole pose-outfit-cigarette-stained wall look is just fantastic!
But I’ve seen so many people wearing glasses like that but with non-prescription lenses. Which (I know i sound like a narc)is just plain irritating. The nerd look is turning into poser. And it’s bad for those of us that actually NEED to wear glasses.
*end rant*

(L.A Eyeworks do some really great frames for not too expensive)
Haha–as someone mentioned, this guy is actually British (he’s in one of my classes this semester). Always great style, but most Yalies don’t dress like this, of course.
This man is gorgeous. I will track him down I swear to it!
I saw this in the book "The Sartorialist" and just spent the past 30 minutes looking for this picture online. He's so dreamy, and preppy, and nerdy… awesome

This guy knows himself. The glasses make him smart. The blazer makes him ”chic” , and the cigarette makes him ”artistic”.
Love it!

*end rant*

Hello, American cool-version of Ewan McGregor. :) I wish more guys dressed like this at my Midwestern liberal arts college. Roadtrip to the Ivies!

Haha–as someone mentioned, this guy is actually British (he’s in one of my classes this semester). Always great style, but most Yalies don’t dress like this, of course.

This has very good style, just like me…. I think I feel in love. Joking. Nice picture though.

This man is gorgeous. I will track him down I swear to it!
I saw this in the book "The Sartorialist" and just spent the past 30 minutes looking for this picture online. He's so dreamy, and preppy, and nerdy… awesome
