Oh, brother, this is a tough one. Let’s not forget shorts are a casual item, to me they should be mostly something you can toss in the wash and fold right out of the dryer. In the last couple of years we have seen summer-weight wool that would be at home with a nice year-round suit, and those are a bit more formal, yet masculine and streamlined. Linen is another option. Silk? My vote is no. Too high-maintenance, although I love the looks here! Jorge from W Palm Beach
From the angle in the first picture, the shorts look like boxers, like the gentleman forgot his pants. Silk shorts would have to be tailored just so (the ones in the second picture look better) to look like they belong on the outside.
I like the idea of men wearing silk, because in my opinion it’s more of a feminine material, and the juxtaposition is really sexy but fresh. Have to say, though, I love the gold shoes and the tatoo in the 1st pic the best. Not that huge a fan of tatoos but sometimes you see ones that make you say, oh yeah. That guy is cool.
The pair in pic #1 are nice, but not a fan of that outfit’s style. If I was a man I would wear those silk shorts in a very simple way, not showing off about the silky item, perhaps with a pair of plimsolls and a cotton shirt, somehow like they’re worn in pic #2: the same way as if they were made of cotton and then people would say: ‘You’re wearing silk shorts.’ and I would go: ‘Oh, really? Gosh, I wasn’t aware of that!’ LOL!
Great idea. I bet silk would look great in a variety of cuts too, and would feel great on if it wasn’t too hot. And here you have them worn casually and with a jacket. And yeah, someone besides me would wear metallic shoes! I had never considered them with shorts, though. Especially like the pair in the lower photo. Top ones look a little too much like boxers to me. I’d like to see more, though.
The combination of the gold shoes, the shorts, and the tattoo could have come from a fairytale! Talk about a modern-age dandy. Do you have a picture of the entire outfit? The shorts are gorgeous…and I want those shoes! Beautiful photos all around, today, Sart!
practical, non. fun? yes. love the first, paisley pair. especially w/ the tat. hate the shoes w/ it though. tap dancing in vegas. maybe a plain loafer. crazy preppy tatty.
LOVE the idea of silk shorts! wonderful way to introduce colour and print to a man’s wardrobe. I really like the top picure, the shorts , tattoo and those fabulous shoes. It’s one of my favourite pictures of this week. I hope he’s going to leave the tattoo as it is and not have it colored. Thanks Sart for an inspiring post.
Maybe chill with the metallic lanvin shoes, and you don’t need to wear the whole Balenciaga runway collection at once. But I always appreciate men who aren’t scared trying new things!
let’s not… looks costumey and like someone is trying wayyyy too hard. but that’s just me. i’m as much into the practical aspect of clothing as i’m into the aesthetic. neither of these photos meet either criteria.
lets not forget that silk is available in lots of different weights, hands and textures. To think only of “silk boxers” is to not really be considering all the possibilities that silk can be.
Any man who can pull off gold shoes is okay in my book. In fact, far from looking underdressed, these two pairs of shorts seem to dress UP the outfit to me.
definitely agree with sart about silk weights and therefore looks. however the look featured is a big no in my book. maybe for lounging and bedroom but i think a no for out in the world. and people complain about flip flops being inappropriate? no shiny silk shorts for me.
I think the raw silk texture, hem detailing, and casual styling of the second photo exemplify great style and an ideal way to wear this look. That said, the second man’s clothing with the first man’s accessories would take the outfit straight from the garden to the city.
Raw silk shorts can be magnificent I think….with these two gentlemen, perhaps the first would have been wise to add a couple of really clunky gold bracelets and rings with some vibrant colors….the second gentleman….pure brilliance combining nice flashy D&G espadrilles with a digital watch.
Listen people, lets get practical with these silk shorts. I am not sure where these folks live, but I will never forget the summer in Texas when I was wearing a silk dress and the ac in my car went out. Tramatized in Texas.
I love the first pic, love the shorts, the shoes and the tattoo combination. Wish i could see the whole picture. Sart do you have a picture of the whole outfit????
i love the second look. the first one is fun, but there is something so chic about the second guy’s outfit. the trim is a really lovely touch. i’d love to meet a guy confident enough to pull this off. what a dandy!
Hmmm. I can’t really feature it. I’m not lovin’ silk shorts but there are some strange things that can be pulled off on the right person with the right accompanying garment and/or accessories in the right light at the right time and of course, in the right place. Other than all those rights, for me silk shorts are generally wrong.
I do however think the dude in the shades (all his accessories are wonderful) pulls it off as good as it’s gonna be pulled…. or is it just his winning smile and confident, sexy gangsta lean?
He’s a 10 on the richter scale, even in silk shorts.
Forgive me for going off topic, but my imagination is captured by the copper shoes! You could wear those to change the spirit of so many things. First idea, with original raw denim 501s.
So funny how things just come up. I was thinking about those silky shorts the other night. Now this morning i’m reading some old fashion magazines and found the same pair of silk shors with cashmere print the guy with the golden Lanvin shoes is wearing. In a editorial with The Virgins band shot by Tery Richardson for Vogue Hommes International, Donald Cumming is wearing the same shorts. They are by Balanciaga.
And no i don’t think these were meant to be for the street. Just enjoy the comfort of these items in your home, or maybe at the beach while buying an icecream.
The first look is a bit on the kinky side, don’t you people think? The underwear look of his shorts, the shoes, the tat combined with bright yellow bag.. and his legs are so hairless they look shaved. Great foto and like the weirdness of the look.
Silk shorts look good but it take a certain body shape, a certain type of silk and a excellent tailor. If you have even a bit of hip the silk will cling to it and make you look large. without good structure you look like you are wearing a skirt or boxers and of course the weight and type of silk will be the largest factor. The first picture doesn’t work as well because the silk is too light weight and doesn’t have the right fit and structure.
i think silk shorts suit the right person, but not in that paisley pattern that looks like boxers, as the above commenter pointed out, or an old neck scarf. i’m also a bit hesitant about the embroidery on the brown shorts, but he pulls it off in the outdoor setting.
i love the concept though, and it certainly takes a brave soul to pull it off. i would prefer solid silk shorts.
hmm…if you’re talking about silk shorts like the pair in the second pic, then maybe.
The first pair reminds me of silk boxers – which funny enough, I think are the sexiest things ever. But for some reason I just want to walk up to this fellow and whisper so very softly in his ear, “Errm…sir, I think you forgot your pants this morning.”
I’m not meaning to completely ignore the clothes, but the man’s tattoo in the first picture is just amazing, how it is so complex and unique but yet simple, being that it is just an outline in black and white. That really is a great photo!
gee i don’t know…. they kind of remind me of the Thai Silk boxers I see everywhere in Thailand. But the 2nd picture seems an okay outfit to pull off…. but, in the tropics.
The second shot is good, I like the detail on the fringe, but the shorts look just a little too tight. Make them a little baggier looking and I would wear them. .
Like it but would err on the side of caution. The first look seems to work better, maybe because of the tattoo? And the bold unapologetically metallic shoes that simply say ‘Iam going the whole hog here – like it or leave it’. It somehow lends the silk an extra wow factor that takes away the pyjama shorts look of the second pic.
i think all silk shorts should have at least some prints on them, or it would be a waste. the sheen of the fabric has this great majestical glow about them.
I just have to say Sart, your site has singlehandedly made me appreciate mens’ fashion. I’m even a bit jealous that I can’t achieve some of the same looks, like the second shot, with the same effect. Thanks for all the inspiration!
If they were heavier raw silk (which can look like rough linen especially when washed) and much baggier I could understand a little better but this just smacks of exhibitionism to me. The guy in the top photo probably works in the circus and they guy in the bottom looks way too pleased with himself. Plus, if you’re gonna wear fitted silk, for crissake’s take the cell-phone outta your pocket!
Paisley printed silk boxers, rose tatto, metallic shoes and not to miss an egg yolk coloured bag…. was his intention by any chance to bring out the sun in his life! great, ‘make your own rules’ is the kind of message that i got from him. keep up the spirit!
I must say, when I first saw the picture, I laughed out loud. When I read your first sentence, I had to smile. It’s the first time I actually got to check out this blog of yours. It’s very inspiring. It was nice to see your kids, and you too, looking so classic. And I must agree. silk shorts are intriguing, because the fabric itself is so sensual. Looking forward to more of your pictures =?
That tattoo is beautiful! Hmm, the problem with silk shorts is the weight of it. It has to be the high-grade textiles that you can pick up in India or the stiffer silks you can source through China and Japan. Otherwise you look like you wore some Hefner boxers out to play.
depends on what weave in silk.. i would love to see a thicker twill or a jacquard, or even slub-silk. (no habotai please)! the cut is most important- slightly long, till just above the knees probably, and slighly tapered, with maybe a turn-up. it would be a quirky yet masculine look (provided it is teamed up well)
I Toatally adore these shorts they add a wonderful sense of structure, texture and color Amazing And dont even get me started on the shoe WOW!! Love calachie
I am afarid I think the shorts look like boxer shorts… silk on a woman may be more wearbale but eve still… no. However, I think in amterial such as raw silk or thicker dupion type, one could probabaly get away with thme, i mst say the last one of this set of pictures looks ht e best and rather cool. just my opinion.
I had dark teal silk shorts once. They felt like I wasn’t wearing anything – great for the hot DC weather, but disconcerting – wondering if your pants had disappeared! LOL!

silk shorts require

have to agree that there’s an element of “still in my pajama’s” to prints on silk-satin shorts or trousers – personally, i think it’s quite sexy.
a bold stripe or jacquard in silk mixed with cotton/hemp/linen/ramie might work better on mere mortals – easier in the wash as well.

i think all silk shorts should have at least some prints on them, or it would be a waste. the sheen of the fabric has this great majestical glow about them.

I just have to say Sart, your site has singlehandedly made me appreciate mens’ fashion. I’m even a bit jealous that I can’t achieve some of the same looks, like the second shot, with the same effect. Thanks for all the inspiration!

If you’ve got the right legs and the right shoes, go for it! It’s summer after all!

LOL!
