This kind of picture / look I question because it’s more mommy’s style than it is the kids. Sure she’s a cutie patootie (and there will be a hundred comments proclaiming so) but I personally don’t get the point unless this girl dressed herself, which I don’t think she did. Will you please post this Sart? (you rarely post critical comments, thanks)

    Either way, she’s a cutie.

I have just found your blog. My husband spotted it and sent me the link. Fantastic photos. I love taking photos, but of course don’t come within a mile! I bet this little lady chose her own clothes. I know 3 year olds who insist on it. What a face.

If the drab woman next to her is Mamma, then perhaps Mamma is expressing her vibrancy through the little one? Maybe the child wants to go home and change into something grey, like her mother? etc etc…

If she didn’t style herself, I will bet money she had a lot of influence on what she’s wearing. Little girls always do. My guess is that the leg warmers were her idea. I also don’t find anything wrong with parents reflecting their style on their kids – that’s how they learn!

to the anonymous that said that s/he questions the mother’s style, seriously, i know TONS of little girls who dress like this and they pick out their outfits on their own. lots of different colors and styles all mashed together. there are just not that many moms who will let them go out like that :) i bet this little girl LOVES that dress and wears it to bed!

it’s rare that little girls get it so right. she definitely knew what to put on. probably from watched her mother.

I’m glad to see a kid wearing clothes with a sense of fun and colour that don’t rely on glitter AND frills AND pink AND fairy motifs to say ‘girl’. With sensible shoes no less. And I’m with ‘iheartfashion’ – my 2 year old daughter could also have dressed herself in this. (She chose spotty shorts worn over jeans this morning.) Was the pout over the lens attention or the occasion?

    1. unless we’re saying “Asian photographer” to distinguish the person in the background from Sart (and even if we are), i think the “Asian” part is a little unnecessary and quite revealing about people.

    2. to people who think the style is all the mother’s doing: clearly you have never dealt with children. the vast majority i come in contact with on a regular basis are very self-determined and do not allow mommy to pick out all their clothes. this little girl is obviously more of the independent type.

Sart, you say this shot is about not doing what everyone else wants you to do, and that is certainly what I feel when I look at the “little star.” It’s her face and demeanor, not her clothing, that communicate to me. In light of the many other photographers around her, I also wonder what is going on–and is it all right to take a person’s photo when she does not want it, even–or especially–a child? After all, Sart’s adult subjects pose for him.

Anyone who thinks that child did not dress herself probably doesn’t have children. It’s all over once they can speak! The parent may indeed be purchasing the clothing for the child, but trust me, the kids have their own take on what to wear.

Aside from all that, it does an old knitter’s heart good to see all the knitted items. I’m so glad I’m not the only one with leg warmers! I might need some pink ones …

You can tell by the look on this kid’s face that there is no way that her mom gets to dress her. “No mommy! I want to wear my glitter dress and my hot pink leg warmers!” When I was that age, this is absolutely how I would have dressed myself. Her mom may have had to convince her to wear a long sleeve shirt and tights though, so she doesn’t freeze to death.

    O this is adorable !

i shoot what moves me, most of the time it is based on what people are wearing but sometimes it is just the moment.

Sometimes I see someone that i wouldn’t take their photo when they are standing still but once they are moving the whole look comes alive – basically i react to the moment and think about the “why” later.

this ,to me, is a great moment wrapped in great style.

At 25, single and living in NYC, there’s not a whole lot that makes me yearn to marry a beautiful woman, settle down and have children.

I don’t care who dressed her (though I think she dressed herself) — she is absolutely adorable! I love the pout and the way her outfit is so put together yet also appropriate for a little girl. Bright, creative and fun! Cheer up kiddo, I’ve made you my wallpaper :) You are such a star, you made my day!

My guess is that she lovingly picked out her clothing, but is now mortified that it has drawn too much attention. I hope she isn’t traumatized into dressing blandly in the future.

She must have dressed herself. Every kid I’ve ever known has been through a stage when they’re really into that, and I don’t blame them, as there’s so little in your life you control as a kid. A boy I used to nanny for went through a stage where he insisted on wearing his green rainboots all the time, even to bed, and often while otherwise clad only in a diaper. It was a pretty winning look, I must admit; when you’re little you can get away with anything. Charming.

aww, what’s the matter cute little stylish boo-boo bear? …i mean, it doesn’t get any better than heart pockets!!

and i actually don’t quite agree that this is necessarily “mommy’s style”. i think this is exactly how a little girl might dress when dressing herself on fall morning…

Little girls can be the most demanding fashionistas.I can see this one refusing to leave the house until she had her matching tights and turtleneck. I have been yelled at by friends/mothers because I have purchased these sets for thier princesses and it only ignited thier inner diva.

all of the little girls i know dress like this..
if mom did dress her though, i applaud her. it’s nice to see a child at fashion week who isn’t dressed like a mini-me in designer clothes.
the facial expression is priceless… people have commented saying ‘great photo, but it doesn’t belong here’. why not? i think it’s beautiful and hilarious.
