Yes, especially the guy to the right feels very 1963. Quite Beatles-esque actually. The glasses, the “moptop” the turtleneck and the tight jacket make the look.
November 25, 2008 at 9:02 am
love the glasses
November 25, 2008 at 9:06 am
i’m imagining that it’s a new-fangled electric razor in the guy’s hand, and the other guy’s pocket as well i think so that it can be 1963 in this picture… i have to believe this because i will never be brave or cool enough to wear those lapels, etc. Holy crap the dude left-center looks GREAT.
I wish I could see the details of his hat in his left hand.
October 20, 2014 at 3:31 am
I think their haircuts are better than back then.
November 25, 2008 at 9:10 am
i love this look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i want to be like them!jejeje
November 25, 2008 at 9:16 am
Love this photo! It speaks volumes. The gentleman facing the camera looks so, so cool, he is immaculately dressed. He could only be Italian. [Hope this photo doesn't prompt a barrage of boring anti-cigarette comments. i don't smoke, i don't like smoking but i defend peoples' right to give themselves bad breath and hideous diseases if they want to.]
Love the way those oversized wayfarers complement their outfits.
November 25, 2008 at 9:24 am
I LOVE this outfit. I wear things like this on a daily bases, all I need is to start smoking! Haha.
Great job! :D

Except for the cellphone is right, otherwise he looks great. Everything here suits his look and his attitude very well. If only he’d known…
November 25, 2008 at 9:55 am
Wow, everything old IS new again. Two questions – Is the murse “in”, or is he holding for a lady friend? And isn’t the purpose of slimmer and smaller electronic devices avoidance of that unsightly pocket distortion?-Capt. Mike

The boys watch the girls while the girls watch the boys who watch the girls go byEye to eye, they solemnly convene to make the sceneWhich is the name of the game, watch a guy watch a dame on any street in townUp and down and over and across, romance is boss
Guys talk “girl talk”, it happens everywhereEyes watch girls walk with tender lovin’ care
November 25, 2008 at 10:17 am
I adore Italian guys and their style and this just confirms it. One word: Lovely
November 25, 2008 at 10:18 am
I love Italian men after my last visit to Milan, but this picture made me love them even more! I like the way he holds his cigarette and his hair.I also like the glasses and the turtleneck of the guy in the front.
November 25, 2008 at 10:19 am
I forgot the tell that I love the way he purchess his lips. Nice detail…
The Man Who Knew Too Much
November 25, 2008 at 10:21 am
make it black and white and it IS Rome 1963.
I like it. :)
November 25, 2008 at 10:40 am
Crisp and sexy! In any time period, this would be a stunning ensemble, but for the new millenium, I think this faux beatnick reinvention is perfect. I can not get over those gold bracelets.
November 25, 2008 at 10:41 am
I love it, it looks right out of a movie!
November 25, 2008 at 10:43 am
Man has clutch bag?lovely
November 25, 2008 at 10:54 am
November 25, 2008 at 11:05 am
Yes, upon seeing this, I was about to say “this is totally Mod~”
November 25, 2008 at 11:07 am
I think they look more Diana Ross than Beatle.
November 25, 2008 at 11:13 am
Besides their amzin choose of clothes and glasses, also take a look of hòw he smokes and how he shows his attitude by bodylanguage.Left guys haircut inspires me
How fantastic, i love this picture, you can see that a moment was captured, but most of all i love their shades.
November 25, 2008 at 11:16 am
Also very chic to see these stylish Milanese guys together.
November 25, 2008 at 11:17 am
I wonder where they are going for lunch!

November 25, 2008 at 11:23 am
The pale blue slacks are wonderful!
November 25, 2008 at 11:40 am
They look incredibly affected and self-conscious. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’m just pointing it out. I would also say that this kind of affectation is more culturally acceptable in Europe. North Americans have more of a taste for the “natural”.
November 25, 2008 at 11:47 am
It’s funny how most of people still have a positive and admired vision of italian men and sense of fashion. Thank you all, but, really, I’m italian and here there’s a spread lack of style, originality and elegance. We are really boring about fashion than most of other countries (in and out Europe).
November 25, 2008 at 11:49 am
Amazing. Very cool. Bravo!
November 25, 2008 at 11:54 am
absolutly, Mr. Schuman! Roma or some other italian city…. Remember the film “The talented Mr. Ripley”? Hearing the sound of the song “Tu vou fa l`americano”. Great! Looking like a Dandy…… Thats me! Hello! Thats me!!! ;-)
November 25, 2008 at 12:07 pm
What a great shot! This photo makes you want to listen in on their conversation.
November 25, 2008 at 12:11 pm
It looks like Fellini´s Dolce Vita.

November 25, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I can only agree with Suzanne Nelson’s comments near the top of the responses. They both olok great!
November 25, 2008 at 12:32 pm

November 25, 2008 at 1:02 pm
black velvet blazer…amazing!!
November 25, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I’ve always wished I had the supreme confidence to pull off a look like this—not necessarily this look (although I do love it) but something like this that takes some boldness.
November 25, 2008 at 1:55 pm
i adore this photosuch class
November 25, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Love their looks, they look like they came out of a movie set..

November 25, 2008 at 3:29 pm
This is amazing, the guy on the left is so great. Love it, awesome photo.
November 25, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Great shot Sart…and a very apt comment to boot. I love seeing shots like this that are very timeless. Could be 1963, definitely is this century. That said, the fellow on the left is sporting a hairstyle that is VERY much early 1960s Italian/French/Continental – the rock & rollers in "La Dolce Vita" come to mind. Nice.
November 25, 2008 at 3:38 pm
I love the jacket the man on the left is wearing, and his white trousers are lovely too! I also want his sunglasses…
November 25, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Love this portrait– all those great sunglasses… Such a modern take on the La Dolce Vita sensibility.
November 25, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Too cool for school :)
November 25, 2008 at 4:31 pm
wonder what their shoes look like
November 25, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Sure it does… when smoking wasn’t so déclassé.
November 25, 2008 at 5:46 pm
First: To everybody who said, ‘yawn:’ could you possibly be any more disrespectful? Despite the fact that the technological era seems to have recast all art (blogs being an obvious and decidedly post-post-modern example, as public property) it is still art. Therefore, show a little respect when you’re commenting on somebody’s work, for crying out loud.
Second: I don’t think this look is boring at all. It’s classy, it’s classic, and it’s well-played. You can’t go wrong with clean, cool, and collected.
November 25, 2008 at 6:06 pm
This is one of the RARE times I like what your men are wearing. Being from rural Iowa and now in DC it’s one of the fews looks I brought with me.
November 25, 2008 at 6:29 pm
November 25, 2008 at 6:39 pm
i love his pose
November 25, 2008 at 6:42 pm
what a great picture! the guys just give off a “cool” vibe.
-h of candid cool
November 25, 2008 at 6:53 pm
this reminds me of the “new look” of the dior homme models.
this would make a good sunglasses advertisement. great capture.
These guys look so cool, I’d love to dress like this everyday.
Not sure though, should white trousers be only worn in summer / spring.
November 25, 2008 at 7:00 pm
…step back in time…I love it…retro is always the best…
November 25, 2008 at 7:41 pm
i love it
November 25, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Wow, those guys look very cool, Nice pic.
November 25, 2008 at 7:45 pm
I hate to be so pc but all I could see was the ciggy.
well, that and a totally affected “look”.
November 25, 2008 at 7:48 pm
That guy looks like a young Patrick Dempsey. Yum.
CK Dexter Haven
November 25, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Yeah, ‘stylish,’ but way too femme.
I can’t begin to imagine how many times the word “fabulous” or “fierce” came up in this conversation. They should be a judging panel on some sort of fashion reality show.
November 25, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Love the glasses on both of the men closer to the camera. Very chic. love the look of the jacket, but no so much the actual jacket. While I’m not a fan of white pants…. the look pulls together for these two. Could do without the ultra-feminine hand gestures (I’ve never thought that looks sophisticated but just rather feminine).
November 25, 2008 at 8:30 pm
this blog is inspiring!!!
November 25, 2008 at 8:47 pm
reminds me of that Will Ferrel skit on SNL with the mini cell phones you can barely see.”Meet you in Milan in an hour!”
November 25, 2008 at 9:15 pm
love, love the sunglasses on all three of them! also can’t ignore the jacket/ white trousers combination on the left, it is excellent!
November 25, 2008 at 9:22 pm
It looks like a Fellini movie. Very cool! The cell phone could be erased from the photo, but he has such a cool way of holding the phone and cigarette in the same hand!
November 25, 2008 at 9:28 pm
What make are the black sunglasses? where can i get them ?
November 25, 2008 at 10:01 pm
They’re acting out a Rufus Wainright song.
November 25, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I love the look of these three young men. so natural, so classy, so together.
But what I love more, is your ability to catch people being themselves. Not posed, not pretending – these images are the reason why I’ve been returning to your blog for well over a year.
thank you for inspiring me and delighting me
November 25, 2008 at 11:17 pm
I thought you meant they were like a mirror reflection of each other, except for the cellphone, until I scrolled down. I think it still applies tho.
November 25, 2008 at 11:24 pm
LOVE it, i like the femininity, the slim silhouettes, and the hair :P it helps that the man facing is so handsome
oh and the sunglasses are the prada version of the wayfarer…
November 26, 2008 at 12:02 am
Love the way they’re carrying themselves… and great sunglasses!
November 26, 2008 at 1:13 am
If they are Italian they wouldn’t say fabulous or fierce.
THE DAY AFTER YOU DIE
November 26, 2008 at 1:37 am
this is how i dress right now, however after seeing this pic i think im gonna stop or change it up.
November 26, 2008 at 2:11 am
This is not new. Or innovative. It maintains some kind of ready wear ready to sleep aesthetic.
November 26, 2008 at 3:08 am
i love it except the cell phone
November 26, 2008 at 5:14 am
too girlie to be 1963
November 26, 2008 at 5:44 am
Beautiful photo, beautiful men. They seem cool & aloof, almost unapproachable- which makes them somehow very appealing.
November 26, 2008 at 6:48 am
i mean what manand i say man carries a clutch bag, and what sort of person thinks this is cool !!! these guys walked into my local they would get called wankers straight up
November 26, 2008 at 7:01 am

November 26, 2008 at 7:23 am

November 26, 2008 at 10:40 am
Amazing picture. Love the style. Actualy I will be going to Milan next weekend. Just a short stop, saturday night/sunday morning through afternoon, but I would like to check out some fashion and maybe acquire some new pieces. Any tips you guys would give me for places that I should definitely pay a visit to? (manswear :))

November 26, 2008 at 12:27 pm
the only thing i don’t like is the ring on his finger…?! haha
November 26, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Oh, Marcello! Where’ve you been!?
November 26, 2008 at 1:27 pm
November 26, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Marcello Mastroianni was asked by an interviewer, “What is ‘la dolce vita’?” He replied “To eat, to work, to smoke.”Nonsmokers(and I have been one for life) do not ‘get’ what a pleasure this is.
Great shot, makes me look and look!

I’m shocked that someone could say “yawn” to this one….this man is FABULOUS!!!! Perfect poise, perfect hair, great glasses, and that jacket! White pants…men need to wear more white pants.
Love this shot!!!
November 26, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Oh, I wish my boyfriend would see this! We’ll be trying to re-invent his style when he gets back on christmas break, but it’s a little hard since he has very little idea of what he likes. Perhaps these guys could pull him in a good direction…

“It’s my new ‘mobile’ from the FUTURE.”
“Can you smoke it?”
November 28, 2008 at 12:19 pm

” Anonymous said…They’re acting out a Rufus Wainright song.”
The song is “Poses” and you are 100% correct
November 30, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Wow,I must buy white pants/a ribbon tie to go with my tux jacket and oversized dior homme sunnies. sleeeek. But what shoes to wear, hmmmmm?
Btw, It’s not the guy on the left holding the LV bag, its the woman behind him, his hand and the bag line up perectly creating the illusion.
fashion for passion
December 1, 2008 at 9:58 am
Great silhouettes, but a bit too precious in the details. I would remove the ribbon tie, open the jacket, and muss the hair a bit.
December 1, 2008 at 2:13 pm
The gold bracelets look perfect… along with everything else.
December 1, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Great jacket. The whole look is slightly undermined by the pompness. Life’s not a commercial!
December 1, 2008 at 5:17 pm
He looks like a waiter from the 60′s… but what I really can’t get past is his mouth. What perfect lips this boy has!!

why sart of course!

December 4, 2008 at 9:11 pm
I love all of your photos from Italy the best, particularly that of the men. The way that they dress is just as powerful as the French woman in Chanel or what Ralph Lauren romanticizes as being quintessentially American. They give men a style and an authority that is otherwise lacking, as if fashion is an art for BOTH sexes to participate in; they illustrate that there ARE options for men other than J. Crew, what most Americans perceive to be the higher evolved man from T-shirt and football jersey. I implore you to take as many photographs of Italian MEN as you can – perhaps even start a side blog, even seasonal, dedicated to Italian men only. May I propose The Sartorialist Italia?
December 7, 2008 at 10:05 am
this is so fantastic. the shades – especially the brown rimmed ones on the right hand guy – are SO perfect with the black outfits. bravissima.
December 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm
he has a feline quality
December 10, 2008 at 1:06 pm
amasing confidance……no fashion is complete with out it..!
December 10, 2008 at 9:46 pm
very Dolce Vita.
December 12, 2008 at 5:56 am
Oh my gosh so gorgeous !!!
December 15, 2008 at 7:28 am
This look works well, though I can’t help but agree with previous comments that this look is slightly effeminate.
Though it could be argued that it isn’t so much the gaping lapels and ostentatious bow that is dare-I-say effeminate, yet his posture.
December 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm
The Murse is completely acceptable for men of gay or straight orientation in Italy. I love this photo, it remind me of Marcello Mastroianni. Why don’t you ever shoot in Rome? I would love to see the young style of Rome up here. It’s fantastic!
January 5, 2009 at 8:33 pm
This is guy really exists? Is he single?
January 7, 2009 at 12:26 pm
