Everyone loves her! Great style, love the lip color, glasses, shirt and hair! This is one of my favorites, a little less major sophistication, more just coooollll.
Rise of the hipsters. Horn-rimmed glasses? Check. Plaid shirt? Check. Unusual accessory? Check. American Spirit cigarettes in front shirt pocket? Check.
She's stunning. She actually looks like my wife's identical twin but with short hair. It's beautiful in every way. I really like the frame she's wearing, complements the shape of her face and makes it look harmonious and elegant.
Horn-rimmed glasses – the popularity of the bold ones is enormous (it's even hard to find subtle frames these days), maybe it's just the shape that suits her well? Plaid shirt – who doesn't have at least one? Unusual accessory – you mean a bike lock? Maybe she's actually riding a bike? And the cigarettes – yes, deliberately placed and exposed but it's rather typical for the teenagers, some kind of teenage pugnacity (so visible in her stare and expression)… As you certainly know, it's typical for young people to use the visual "code" and somehow symbolic items to demonstrate a certain attitude. All of these things are as old as the world, older than the recent popularity of the world "hipster". In my opinion, the "hipster look" is often a cliche, designed from many fancy (but sometimes kitschy) items that don't create a strong, original entirety and lacks the personality and character. This girl, for me, certainly HAS both character and personality, she uses and mixes these items knowingly and with taste. I object to use the world "hipster" as a pejorative describing somebody who expresses his knowledge and familiarity with popular culture, teenage culture, street culture, even mass media cliches. It's a little bit tricky, but in this case I agree it's rather a "kerouac-ambiance" look than swanking about a collection of fancy items.
Interesting, a hipster on the sartorialist. I'm not sure what to think. 75% of the folks I hang out with dress like this. Maybe this is making it hard for me to get perspective.
@emmadajska, " You're a real gone gal". The Howl Festival was this past weekend at Tompkins Square Park. Your collages show great promise. Loved 'Little Beatles'.
So great. She looks like the love child of a grown-up Shiloh Jolie-Pitt and early ScarJo from Ghostworld. With a dash of Joey Ramone swagger thrown in the mix. No high fashion, high heels or expensive bag needed.
Great haircut, glasses, plaid button-down and fixed gear chain padlock phenomenon…love it! Does she actually have her bike with her? Or just wearing the chain as a true fixie enthusiast might?
Gorgeous young woman. I agree with the Scarlett Johansson comparison–BUT this woman hasn't been through the Hollywood mill, so she is way more interesting because she is doing her own thing.
perfect for the age and for her age.. Truly the look of today's youth; Dressing for who you are, not what you want to be.. http://oslolook.blogspot.com/
I second emmadajska's post. Please, let's not add hipster scolding to cigarette and bike helmet scolding. All are tiresome and none reflect well upon their practitioners.
Well personally I prefer hipsters to fashionistas if we're going to hurl labels around, but she's just great regardless. And I bet her bike lock actually gets used – some of the cycle chic crew seem to ride one block then pose.
Sometimes I wonder how you find so much beauty in everyday things, this picture seems like a wonderful example of style that we overlook so often. I love how she has such simple accessories: stud earrings and horn rimmed glasses and keeps her makeup simple to match it. Her lips are the most obvious feature and you can see that was a deliberate highlighting of one of her stronger features :) I have often felt that plaid is difficult to use as something feminine but I like how this works.
This includes elements of standard street style that you could find in any East Art Village in a few major cities – however, it's a nice contrast from elements that you'd find in standard runway style that we see often on this blog.
I've seen hairstyles similar to this on a few girls. Some go as far as to shave one side. It's interesting, and when done on the right person, adds a ton of attitude and boldness to their look. It could appear to be gimmicky or 'off' if not executed properly, though.
Yes, we all see the Evo Mini U-Lock with bike chain and the Spirits in the breast pocket. But no one else noticed the button on the opposing breast pocket? I think it was intentionally pinned there to create a more balanced look. I love subtle details!

I love the glasses. I really like how she is in a pretty casual, laid back outfit, but from her stance, and the way and has a nose and chin held up she could be an aristocrat or royal, someone of great importance. There's a really pretty girl behind the glasses and mousy hair. Her lips remind me of Scarlett Johannson. x
and to think once we have grown up and become adult, that we leave high school labels behind. yet i keep reading 'hipster' and ' fashionista' responses.

i will say this, the diamond earring stud & pillowly pink pout are what puts the spin on the masculine attire.
I can imagine that bike chain getting pretty heavy. I swear I know this girl though….lips are throwing me off though. Maybe just a similar hair style, glasses, eyes, and fashion taste…….which means I probably know this girl.
@Dorothy C: she's a wonderful server at Cafe Select, a Swiss cafe in Nolita. And to the earlier commenters: she's everything the picture captures. Shy but nice, stylish and very beautifully unassuming.
@jelliy: I think hipsters make fashion with less, for the most part. Or at least that's how it started. I live in Seattle and what was once original is totally run of the mill now. You can't turn around on Cap Hill without seeing someone dressed like this, right down to the pin on her pocket probably professing something "radical." This haircut was standard 20-something queer a couple of years ago and is now standard hipster. Not to say this isn't a great shot and the girl isn't beautiful. But walking around my neighborhood sometimes is like going to a party where everyone is wearing the same basic little black dress. Even so, I don't want to live anywhere else.
It's interesting – and I see the value in this picture, but I'm put off by her hair. It looks dirty. I have a feeling she doesn't quite care what we think of her. However, I do like how she wears her bike chain – THAT works.

Other than the fact that this girl is a textbook example of a "type" I don't see anything here.

She looks like a byrd. Hair resembles a feather cut.

She looks a little like Michelle Williams – Heath Ledger's baby mama.
