Smooth and dapper. With that fixed wheel bike, I must say, that's the classiest looking hipster I've ever seen. I must admit, though, that looks like an awfully uncomfortable outfit in which to ride a bicycle.
Love the look. Love the sunglasses, especially, wish I could get a closer view of them.
can't get enough of metropolitan bikes! I have a purple retro one myself and can't imagine anything better than cruising through Kreuzberg and the rest of Berlin :) In this spirit, happy weekend all of you
Does anyone else feel a little disturbed that although the Sartorialist frequently features pictures of people with bicycles (which is wonderful!), those people are almost never wearing helmets? Head injuries aren't glamourous if you ask me.
I know him!!!!! I went to church with that lovely fellow hahaha. I'm glad to see Timothy on one of the most famous fashion blogs in the world! Makes me smile
I would love to see some images of stylish folks riding bikes and also wearing helmets on here. Brain damage is irreversible and horrible to witness, one friend lost is too many friends gone.
Everything about this photo is fabulous. The composition, the depth of field, the taxi, the other pedestrians, the bike, the man on the bike, the man's style…on the bike. Love it all!
Brilliant, classy photo. One of those photos that you just think YES! On a serious note though, lack of helmets on cool bike riders is a problem, but nobody has come up with a bike helmet that looks cool. Any designers out there want to take up the challenge?
For crying out loud this is a fashion blog not a statement of peoples safety choices or lack of . From smoking to no helmets ,yes we need more stylish helmets but what are you ,these people already have mothers to tell them off for being silly . There was photo of my cousin in here a few weeks ago and he was smoking I could not believe all the judgmental comments .believe me everytime he goes home to his 80 year old mother she tells him off for smoking . So people get over it ! There are greater crimes against fashion out there
@Sarah and Anonymous helmets are not always suitable (i.e. they are designed for a certain style of riding) and can in fact cause certain head and neck injuries. They aren't bad but it should be up to the rider whether or not they wish to wear one. On an upright bicycle like this it is extremely unlikely the rider would hit their head if they were to fall, as say opposed to a racing bike where the rider would go over the handlebars head first. Don't believe the helmet companies and end up like us here in Australia where we have mandatory helmet laws and as a result no cycling culture and a growing obesity problem. Check out the Copenhagen Cycle Chic blog for fabulous photos of how people ride in their normal clothes everyday, sans helmets (note Copenhagen also has far fewer injuries than countries like us that promote helmets).
Enough with the helmet requests – just go to Holland or Denmark to see stylish helmetless people in suits on bikes with skulls intact. What makes you safe on a bike is not a helmet, it's lots of other people on bikes. Cyclist numbers plummet whenever mandatory helmet laws are introduced. Go figure. This guy looks totally appropriate for street cycling. And I am loving all the Mad Men hairstyles creeping in everywhere.
Uber cool, and it seems to be the look for gent's hair styles at the moment, thank god we are moving on from the spiky cropped hair a few years ago! As for a helmet, in Australia, it's almost a law that you must ride with a helmet, and let me tell you, I've seen plenty of hipsters abound with really cool looking helmets. And if you, like me and this gent in the pic sport similar hair, then it doesn't actually get flat like "helmet hair". Believe me, there's enough product in there to keep it that way.
And I am a massive fan of mixing tones in a suit. Yes, you may argue it isn't a "suit" but a blazer and pants but this is such a great look compared to the same colour top to toe(boring). Think double denim but in a "suited" sense. So much more individual and interesting.
Wearing a helmet is by personal choice for adults, and people really need to stop nagging ——– it's just not their business what someone else does in regard to this. Yakkay makes relatively stylish helmets, but they don't fit very well. There is a market out there – and people would buy stylish helmets that fit – so hopefully some resourceful person will take on the challenge!
The guy looks great! Based on the clothing of the others, it must be warm there in NYC?
I am starting to suspect that people in Manhattan are intentionally dressing up and riding bicycles on conspicuous streets in hopes of getting spotted by fashion photographers/boggers like yourself. Once they've been seen, they then go home and put on their comfortable bike-riding clothes and helmets. I'll have to try it myself…
OH My Gosh. Looks very nice, not, loook Beatiful. I'm a blogger in Brazil, and started arrazando much. It Boy talk about fashion, something very common here. Other than that … The look Very good! I'll look for more photos to inspire me and make looks amazing. And if you are curious to know from my blog without pity, will comment on, do reviews … http://www.FashionItBoy.blogspot.com Kiss for women, and handshake for men.
I've been a NYC cyclist for close to forty years; therefore, I feel it's incumbent upon me to weigh-in on the helmet issue. Yes, it's a personal choice, but it affects others when they have to witness the aftermath of a fatal cranial crash. I've seen it and it's gruesome. Ride safely and courteously all.
I love this look so much that I'm giving this dude the benefit of the doubt, even though it looks like he totally ripped off of the Mad Men look.
Regarding the helmet debate: Personally, I think a helmet is essential in NYC, regardless of what type of bike you are riding. Many European cities like Amsterdam have bike lanes and very large cycling populations. There is a very diverse cycling culture, there. Riding in NYC can be scary and dangerous, because almost no one cycles–and most of the people who do are "sporty," sweaty, and wearing spandex (gross)!
@Dasher: well said! This from someone in Amsterdam, where everybody bikes, in heels, ballgowns, what not. It can be done, people! And please let's keep the boring comments about helmets and smoking to ourselves, this is a style blog!
Love the composition, the colours and the concept. Don't love the man though. Appreciate that he has some sort of style, but it speaks to me in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable. He looks creepy, not someone I would invite to a dinner party. It's like he's trying too hard in his slick suit, but then adds this more interesting quirky bike.
This is a perfect photo. I wish all men dressed and acted like this. I have a purple retro one myself and can't imagine anything better than cruising through Kreuzberg and the rest of Berlin. Brain damage is irreversible and horrible to witness, one friend lost is too many friends gone.
great classic style. love the fact that such a style is seen more and more these days. we're really getting back to looking dapper. to proper dressing. fuck the skinny pant and the flats!
Excellent. Thats how its done right there. But I have to say, to anonymous above… sometimes, skinny jeans and flats are called for. I'm not wearing a two toned suit when I'm sweeping out my garage.
that's a look would take a few seconds of attention from me … hope no light pole in front :o) … one thing though – there's something uncomfortable for him – too high the seat maybe? or he should try and be more relaxed?

i wonder if he has bikes in all colors, hehe.
great classic style. love the fact that such a style is seen more and more these days. we're really getting back to looking dapper. to proper dressing. fuck the skinny pant and the flats!

This has just inspired me to get my boyfriend a chrome bike and new suit for his birthday! Bonjour, summer!

Excellent. Thats how its done right there. But I have to say, to anonymous above… sometimes, skinny jeans and flats are called for. I'm not wearing a two toned suit when I'm sweeping out my garage.

The contrast between the man and bike make for perfecion.
Very Avante-Garde.

Such a wonderful photo. Love the use of his corporate fashion yet riding a bicycle, ironic maybe.

Am I the only one who thinks this young man looks a lot like Jake Gyllenhaal? :D
No matter, this is an awesome picture!

that's a look would take a few seconds of attention from me … hope no light pole in front :o) … one thing though – there's something uncomfortable for him – too high the seat maybe? or he should try and be more relaxed?

Great photo, do agree with another commenter, don’t like the man. His apparel is fine, but he’s face doesn’t work in the photo or something.

Could people stop banging on about cycle helmets. They DO NOT make you a safer cyclist. FACT
