Gorgeous picture! Very Paris.
January 27, 2009 at 9:10 am
i love how europeans can’t be bothered to flink the ask off their cigarettes. i think it says a lot about the difference americans and the french (or spanish, italian, etc.)
January 27, 2009 at 9:13 am
what a stunning shot.
I rarely actually think smoking is sexy…. but in Paris, it is.
January 27, 2009 at 9:23 am
How do you keep getting such amazing photos?!
Hadley Gets Crafty
January 27, 2009 at 9:25 am
Oh, I often still wish I were a smoker! Funny how your body misses things so profoundly even when your brain says “done”.
At any rate, I like this woman’s purposeful stride.
A cinema moment…inspirational-s
January 27, 2009 at 9:28 am
Were you on a motorbike? Beautiful rich tones in this picture! Nice one!
January 27, 2009 at 9:30 am
Magnificent. I agree, this is incredibly Paris.
January 27, 2009 at 9:35 am
very walk of shame…
I love this in black and white! It’s very 60s European glam…
Catherine like Deneuve
January 27, 2009 at 9:38 am
What a shot! The rearview mirror on the bike (or is it a moto?), the crystal-clear focus on the girl, wow.Totally timeless and classic–coat, bag, hair, makeup (or lack thereof, but she’s so lovely she doesn’t need it). She will only regret the cigarette later. I would love to put my hair up like that, but if I walk quickly it falls down. What is the trick?
January 27, 2009 at 9:42 am
January 27, 2009 at 9:45 am
Love it! The jacket and the bag are great choices.
January 27, 2009 at 9:48 am
Love her Dior…
this picture is absolutely perfect!
January 27, 2009 at 9:52 am
This picture is timeless, and gorgeous. The benz in the background is the only thing in the photo that gives it away as contemporary. Just lovely!
January 27, 2009 at 9:59 am
looks like a movie still from godard.
January 27, 2009 at 10:00 am
she is hot!!wearing amazing bag and jacket..waa lah
January 27, 2009 at 10:01 am
are they filming a new version of “the hills” in paris? ;)
January 27, 2009 at 10:04 am
Love the belted coat! And, yes, this photo just screams Paris, no caption necessary.
January 27, 2009 at 10:15 am
i love this picture most of all
January 27, 2009 at 10:18 am
WOW! AMAZING shot!
January 27, 2009 at 10:19 am
I wish she didn’t make smoking look so cool.
January 27, 2009 at 10:20 am
reminds me of the new wave. a bout de souffle. a new Jane Seberg.
January 27, 2009 at 10:22 am
ohh…this is your first black/white image that i seein some moment is b/w the besti like it…
tellement Paris, french woman just know how to play itoh so well
I love the picture and what she is wearing. It’s a shame she is smoking though as I really don’t think it suits her. If you imagine the picture without the cigarette you’d think here is a stunning looking girl that probably smells of Chanel perfume. Instead you’d think here is a stunning looking girl that probably smells of Marlborough lights.
January 27, 2009 at 10:25 am
How I miss living in Paris… Picture is beautifully shot too, adds style to an already stylish outfit.
January 27, 2009 at 10:26 am
January 27, 2009 at 10:28 am
She smokes! Why do some still believe that a cigarette is an accessory?
January 27, 2009 at 10:33 am
Une vraie parisienne
This look like an old picture, is really great.
January 27, 2009 at 10:35 am
She’s lovely, but looks like she’s coughing.
Jorge from W Palm Beach
Now thats my kind of girl: one killer accessory (handbag) and the rest, keep it very classic and very simple. Agree with Heloise, great light and picture!
January 27, 2009 at 10:36 am
The black & white just captures her.
January 27, 2009 at 10:38 am
Gorgeous girl, and I love love love the belted coat!
January 27, 2009 at 10:40 am
January 27, 2009 at 10:43 am

January 27, 2009 at 10:55 am
thats so so pretty! shes gorgeous!! tres chic!
January 27, 2009 at 10:56 am
Good cigarette, nice attitude!!
January 27, 2009 at 10:58 am
Wonderful… if it weren’t for the cars in the background (and perhaps those lapels), this could have been taken in the 60s or 70s.
mi moleskine y yo
January 27, 2009 at 11:02 am
She looks cool, I would like to see her dress. It’d be beautiful, like the other clothes
January 27, 2009 at 11:04 am
This has got to be one of your first black and white pictures. Amazing. Straight out of a French film noir.
January 27, 2009 at 11:10 am
Very nice picture. Has a “soft” touch to it.
January 27, 2009 at 11:11 am
Love her lady Dior¡¡ and her hair is perfect¡
Ahh! B&W, how beautifully perfect…
January 27, 2009 at 11:12 am
Wonderful B/W photo. I bet this lady only use half an hour to tidy up herself, but it’s just great!! little mess hair, but i like it!
Her face reflectin Paris in this days.
Enric, from Barcelona.
January 27, 2009 at 11:14 am
is that Doutzen?
January 27, 2009 at 11:15 am
Her faces reflecting Paris in this days.
Enric, fron Barcelona.
January 27, 2009 at 11:17 am
This is amazing… This is art. I want to hang this pic at my wall… So much expression about it. What she’s thinking, where she’s about to go? Love the laid back hair… a perfect shot, really!
January 27, 2009 at 11:19 am
i love the black and white. that never happens here!
January 27, 2009 at 11:20 am
Love how you introduced the side mirror/image! Don’t love the ciggy–she could be walking around the states looking like that. Actually looks like someone that just woke up at her boyfriends and is making her way home.
January 27, 2009 at 11:21 am
she’s so beautiful!
January 27, 2009 at 11:22 am
love this. wish I was classy enough to pull off that messy hair style. Love the composition, and the reflection in the mirror.
January 27, 2009 at 11:23 am
I love her coat, just shrugged on unassumingly. She looks fabulous even though she seems cold and tired. Great shot!
January 27, 2009 at 11:25 am
So parisienne… Love it !
January 27, 2009 at 11:26 am
Oh Sart… your editor will have a really hard time editing your book. There are soooo many good pictures to chose from…
January 27, 2009 at 11:28 am
January 27, 2009 at 11:31 am
agreed and i love how it looks somewhat voyeuristic. did you set up the shot like that or was it candid?
January 27, 2009 at 11:38 am
true…i was just about to say: “very parisienne very”….i would have known it wa sparis immediately!nancy
January 27, 2009 at 11:43 am
i wish it was winter in australia…
January 27, 2009 at 11:44 am
I love the way her hair and coat have been tied in a hurry as she was dashing out of the house, yet she still looks so chic. I also like the way the mirror is hinting at her surroundings.
January 27, 2009 at 11:47 am
I stayed two weeks+ in the Marais and she reminds me of many of the women That I saw, that tousled, yet chic look.
January 27, 2009 at 11:52 am
Tellement parisienne! Thank you for all your pictures! they are an endless source of inspiration!
January 27, 2009 at 11:54 am
amazin pic!love the B&W… and the Dior bag of course…
January 27, 2009 at 11:56 am
love this picture…
January 27, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Stunning picture.. Herb eat your heart out!
January 27, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I just love that this picture is black and white
January 27, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Reminds me of Charlotte Casiraghi. Very chic!
i was in paris for the first time (!) last week and found myself walking behind two women with very similar, messy, high chignons.
in true sartorialist-reader fashion, i found myself meditating on it for a large part of the morning. in america, this style would be considered sloppy (and really only fit for a walk of shame back to your dorm room), but it seems to fit in perfectly with parisian style. any thoughts as to why it works so well?
January 27, 2009 at 12:06 pm
I like the bag, tres chic.
January 27, 2009 at 12:08 pm
I love the combination of fierceness and vulnerability.
January 27, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Lady Dior bag looks great on the girl.
January 27, 2009 at 12:11 pm
this is definitely one of your best pictures. well done Sr.
January 27, 2009 at 12:15 pm
wow that looks like right from some magazine….fantastic
January 27, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Is it the cigarette that makes this photo? If so, it’s sad as we all know it’s an unhealthy habit. The only thing I like is her hair.
i love it! black and white is my fav. format for pics…but i which i could get a close up of that charm on the bag…looks so cute!
January 27, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Love it. Great shadows, great mood.
Yah people will bitch about romanticising the cigarette and smoking, blah blah blah but take it from someone who has NEVER smoked a day in her life (cigarettes, that is), I still find shots of people smoking to be glamorous. I can’t help it. Though it’s very bad, it looks very good :)
Besides, that’s what people do in Europe and you’ve captured it well.
There is always something sexy about haplessly pulled up hair and a cigarette! It seems that she just woke up and “walla” a chic city photo moment…
is that you in the vespa’s side mirror?? love the shot
Federica - Inside a bullet with butterfly wings
January 27, 2009 at 12:29 pm
January 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Sart!! On Point! She is well dressed with her short coat and stockings and purse and cigarette and perfect eyebrows and hair. And you captured it oh so well with the black and white photo! So, So, French…You rock!
January 27, 2009 at 12:32 pm
very chic. however, when will people, europeans included, realize that smoking is passé?
fantastic photo! i love the reflection in the scooter mirror. paris (et cette jeune fille) often lends itself beautifully to black and white shots!
January 27, 2009 at 12:36 pm
smoking a cig has never been more sexy
January 27, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Hair in a rubber band, no makeup, looks like someone is making the “walk of shame”. If you could look in her purse, you’d find her panties and a phone number scrawled drunkenly on a cocktail napkin.
January 27, 2009 at 12:42 pm
One last word…whether the reflection in the motorcycle mirror was intentional or not, it really works for me. You have a Noir photograph with a little Alfred Hitchcock effect thrown on as the icing. Great!
January 27, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Dopeness!!!!!!!!..look at those Ray Bans with the salt and pepper grey
January 27, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Looks like a latter-day Audrey Hepburn/Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment. Very stylish on her walk of shame.
January 27, 2009 at 12:53 pm
im quite dying to know whats on her feet
January 27, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Great shot – beautiful girl … but she looks like she is coughing; that takes a bit of the romance away.
January 27, 2009 at 12:58 pm
That is probably one of the most gorgeous pictures I’ve ever seen.
January 27, 2009 at 1:03 pm
the girl resembles Doutzen Kroes!
January 27, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Love this photo. It’s SO French!
January 27, 2009 at 1:10 pm
January 27, 2009 at 1:14 pm
love the black and white color, so chic..
January 27, 2009 at 1:16 pm
lovely photo, love the trench
Haunting. Existential. Provocative. Someday, someone will write an entire novel about this girl, this photograph.
January 27, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I love this B&W shot! It is gorgeous!
January 27, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Gorgeous girl too!Love the style..
January 27, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I am not crazy about the girl, I must say. However, what a beautifully-framed shot! I love the blurry gate obfuscating the view of a Parisian subject in motion. Fantastic!
January 27, 2009 at 1:36 pm
This looks to be a perfect example of why I quit smoking: I love my clothes too much. Are those not burnholes near the hem of her coat in front?Lovely girl, though, and a beautiful photograph.
January 27, 2009 at 1:44 pm
- she looks like she just rolled out of bed and was just as beautiful w sleep in her eye as with the leggings and awesome coat!
I miss France…
January 27, 2009 at 1:46 pm
January 27, 2009 at 1:49 pm
i wish she weren’t hunching or smoking but i like the messy hair, the coat, the stockings, the stride. wish you caught her shoes.
The Khaki Crusader
January 27, 2009 at 1:52 pm
great action. great feeling. great choice of black and white.
January 27, 2009 at 1:53 pm
what a rad photo – besides the delicate beauty trying to stay warm we are given a fantastic self portrait. very clever
January 27, 2009 at 1:59 pm
the picture is wonderful (as always) but i’m not impressed by her clothing at all. She looks like every other 20-something girl.
January 27, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I sort of find this photo sad. A beautiful young woman, puffing away. Self-destructive.
January 27, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Insanely beautiful.I like her laidback bun;D
January 27, 2009 at 2:04 pm
January 27, 2009 at 2:07 pm
January 27, 2009 at 2:12 pm
héloïse said what i came here to say. i love the picture!
Something about the complete candor of this shot gives her whole appearance just that much more of a sense of completion.
The bag with the coat looks fantastic, especially with the minor amount of adornments.
January 27, 2009 at 2:13 pm
This girl should date me. –James.
January 27, 2009 at 2:14 pm
She looks as if she’s had a long night. Maybe good or not so good, but she’s still stylish. lol
January 27, 2009 at 2:18 pm
stunning – is this the first b&w i have seen on the blog… I am trying to remember. Its beautiful. I love the coat, the way her legs look like a brush stroke in the black tights. I love the clean face and the loose up do tres chic.
January 27, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Paris je t’ aime
January 27, 2009 at 2:24 pm
smoke is not good…
Love frey black and white pictures, they are so artistic
January 27, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Trés chic! This is why books like “All You Need to Be Impossibly French…” exist!
January 27, 2009 at 2:28 pm
This is quintessentially Parisian chic, no Westerner can pull off casual like this….
January 27, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Exquisite picture, Sart! She looks like a very young Jeanne Moreau.
January 27, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Wonderful picture! It has the mood of when fashion gets mixed with the real tough quick everyday life. I love it!
January 27, 2009 at 2:37 pm
this makes me miss Paris… :(
January 27, 2009 at 2:39 pm
oh this is simply gorgeous! very old worldly.
January 27, 2009 at 2:41 pm
if only we could all appear so glamourous on our early morning walk of shame.
January 27, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Black and white always gives this extra edge to a picture…it just looks like a movie still….Wonderfull !
January 27, 2009 at 2:44 pm
i love the picture! what camera have you used?
Beautiful Photography! i want to frame it!
January 27, 2009 at 2:53 pm
January 27, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Beautiful in b/w but, what are the colors of her ensemble?
January 27, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Ahhhh, to look so chic without a lot of work. The young have it…
January 27, 2009 at 2:59 pm
O! So Paris! Fantastic moment!
January 27, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Lovely shot. I’m not sure if this resembles the “walk of shame” or a sad girl after a bad breakup. In any case, I love everything but the cancer stick. She’d look much more cosmopolitan with an ipod or something in her hand, in place of the cigarette.
January 27, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Beautiful picture- it looks almost voyeuristic
January 27, 2009 at 3:28 pm
i love this picture so so much
January 27, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I’d say too bad the mirror of the scooter didn’t made the picture imperfect.BUT….then I see a reflection of Mr Sartorialist himself, and now it IS a perfect picture.
The only reason why this picture is not 100% perfection is the cigarette. But that’s just my personal opinion.
January 27, 2009 at 3:59 pm
I adore this photo! She is very sexy.
January 27, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Beautiful beautiful shot!
January 27, 2009 at 4:03 pm
over the years, with the birth of digital and the death of film, it’s amazing to see how people respond so much to monochrome – both in a visceral, and yet, undiscerning way.
January 27, 2009 at 4:10 pm
what a capture!
January 27, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Wow, this is a favorite shot for sure. Verry nice.
January 27, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I have a coat very similar; I love the way it feels like a “lined bathrobe”, but looks very classic. I agree with the multitude of comments on your wonderful picture taking capabilities, maestro. xo
January 27, 2009 at 4:23 pm
great shot. definitely a marais girl!
January 27, 2009 at 4:30 pm
I also would like to know how to make my hair look like that.
and I wish we could see her shoes…!
January 27, 2009 at 4:44 pm
beautiful girl, beautiful picture. it reminds the best photos from peter lindbergh. nice work sart!
January 27, 2009 at 4:53 pm
She looks cold.
January 27, 2009 at 5:23 pm
If I could take out the cigarette and add some lovely leather gloves… for her sake and that of the otherwise magical image.
such a great shot!!
January 27, 2009 at 5:43 pm
this is art!
January 27, 2009 at 5:55 pm
The shoulder on her coat is fantastic; a great, simple ensemble. This thread has also reminded me that the only thing more irritating than smoking is uppity self-righteous non-smokers.
January 27, 2009 at 6:10 pm
January 27, 2009 at 6:11 pm
In this single frame, you’ve captured the fleeting creature in it’s most natural, translucent state. What a high that must have been.
January 27, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Her hair and attitude are sooooo Parisian!
January 27, 2009 at 6:26 pm
great action shoot. it makes me miss le marais, there is smoething about this that makes me think of jules et jim. it might be the monochrome or something about the inadvertent erotic nature of this girl. seductive but not slutty. haahaha
January 27, 2009 at 6:33 pm
love the hair and lady dior bag. butt the ciggy looks painful!
January 27, 2009 at 6:35 pm
If she was holding an ipod or cell phone instead of a cigarette, would we be as compelled to give her a story?
January 27, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Amazing picture…love all the greys and blacks. This picture is definitely very…Paris!
January 27, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I could stare at this picture for an hour, just reading everything about this image… I’d say “you should start selling artist’s prints”, but the book’s coming out eventually, so I guess we’ll have to wait for that first!
January 27, 2009 at 7:09 pm
What an incredible photo! The mood is so evocative of European angst in black and white, I’m weak in the knees. And the blurry bike with her in focus – you had to catch this in a hurry. Ya done good!Forget fashion this is timeless style.
Art! If it were not for your copyright, which I shall respect, I’d like to live with this image. Thanks for showing some of your work in b/w.
January 27, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Louise you’re beautiful comme toujours
January 27, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Shes beautiful. And with that coat, she looks like she just got out of bed to meet someone, careless because she knows her beauty
January 27, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Tres Chic , looks like Charlotte of Monaco !
January 27, 2009 at 7:31 pm
beautiful shot!love the rear view mirror placement in the picture
January 27, 2009 at 7:50 pm
This is just a beautiful shot. All the greys, and blacks. She looks wonderful and as though she has a story to tell.
One Man's Style
January 27, 2009 at 7:57 pm
beautiful. holding the cig makes it so cool too. why i dont know, it shouldnt, but it just does. also in B and w, just wow. i know i am not saying much different than everyone else but its pics like this that put you over the top sart!!!
January 27, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Nope, in my opinion, the cigarette lends an air of old-world romance and perfectly matches the b&w tone of the picture (an iPod or phone would seem incongruous and destroy the glamor of the shot, I think).
But I am really writing because of the hair: I'm a fan of the messy bun look, but this seems to be a kind of double bun with a soft part on the right and one casually overlooked strand. What is going on here and do you think it would it be possible to imitate, if not recreate? I'd love to hear thoughts or suggestions, seeing as you're clearly a fashionable bunch. :-) Thanks!
January 27, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Great shot, great eye, great sense of composition…That’s why I’m completely adicted to this blog!!!!
I love youuuuuuuuuu, the Sartorialist!!!!! Tks for all those stunning shots of yours!

January 27, 2009 at 10:04 pm
he, b+w! nice one.
January 27, 2009 at 10:16 pm
My guess is this photo would be so-so were it in color. In black and white, however, it has to be my favorite of anything I have seen you do. If they were creating a pictorial dictionary for French phrases, she would be the entry for je ne sais quoi. The hair, the lips, the legs, the bag; no jewelry (visible), not even simple earrings, and short nails with no polish; wearing a coat that, perhaps, was not the one she wore to wherever it is she is now rushing from. First cigarette for the day, for a nicotine kick until she gets to the first cafe au lait of the day. Utterly inspiring – you’ve caught a muse on film!
January 27, 2009 at 10:18 pm
It’s a beautiful shot. You certainly got it, congratulations!!!
but, I don’t think it captures any particular beauty on the part of the subject. I agree that her look, face, and clothes are a little mundane. But is that the point? Are you trying to show us ordinary, plain people elevated to the sublime?
January 27, 2009 at 10:32 pm
This is beautiful. I love her, shes so cute. I also love tobacco chic, I dont smoke myself but just love it in photos…can’t really explain it
January 27, 2009 at 10:40 pm
she looks like doutzen, what is she covering up?
January 27, 2009 at 11:05 pm
I’m in love.
And yes, she makes smoking look irresistible.
January 27, 2009 at 11:40 pm
January 27, 2009 at 11:47 pm
Motion in motion!
Glad to see this in your photography.
January 27, 2009 at 11:56 pm
This reminds me of a famous italian photo.
I think my last post didn’t go through, so I’ll add again, motion in motion. Glad to see you bring motion into your work – and, yes, I know, this isn’t the first time.
January 28, 2009 at 12:06 am
i’d love to know what shoes she was wearing…
January 28, 2009 at 12:24 am
I concur with the consensus. This shot is one of your very best Sart, and I really appreciate your enthusiasm. Your work of late has been moving to a completely other level of inspiration.
She is gorgeous. So Parisienne, so perfect. This picture just makes me smile.
January 28, 2009 at 12:44 am
I guess I am only echoing what others have said, but this picture is so well composed. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, I am sure I could write atleast 1002…
Appreciated, as always.
getting artsy, are we sart?
I like the way her legs contrast with her bulky/blurry coat.
January 28, 2009 at 12:51 am
beautiful shot. it looks like all is busy around her, but she’s having a quiet moment with herself. And I love how the light is reflected of the mirror in the foreground
January 28, 2009 at 1:08 am
im in love with it.
Eugénie from Paris
January 28, 2009 at 2:44 am
In the early seventies, my very bourgeoise French grandmother and mother were saying that it was not appropriate for a woman to smoke on the street (my grandmother and my mother were both chain smokers, but would have never been caught smoking on the street).
January 28, 2009 at 2:57 am
Love her Dior bag! This is a stunning photo!
January 28, 2009 at 3:12 am
isn’t it doutzen kroes????????
January 28, 2009 at 3:25 am
I have been staring at this picture since you posted it. And I can’t help but wonder, did you plan the whole mirror of the scooter and your reflection bit? Given that you caught the girl in movement, it seems to me that it is a miracle that you even got the picture. The fact that it is perfect is amazing. Either way, planned or not planned, this picture is a blessing. I want to frame it and put it in my room.
January 28, 2009 at 4:16 am
she is effortlessly stylish and you have captured her is a near perfect moment where her thoughts are covered with the downward eyes but still the image speaks volumes!I do love this picture.
January 28, 2009 at 5:10 am
is she Charlotte Casiraghi?
January 28, 2009 at 6:07 am

January 28, 2009 at 7:35 am
If it wasn’t for the Dior bag I would swear this was taken in the 60′s. Perfect!
January 28, 2009 at 7:36 am
I love her Lady Dior Bag !!!!!

January 28, 2009 at 8:26 am
I quitted smoking years ago but I must admit that the righteous comments about how it’s bad to smoke make me feel like smoking again :-)
January 28, 2009 at 8:38 am
I think she is the famous model from Holland Doutzen Kroes…
January 28, 2009 at 8:43 am

gorgeous photoeven better bag
January 28, 2009 at 9:26 am
I think it’s interesting how everyone has their take on the story behind this picture– a sign of great art. I didn’t think “walk of shame” when I saw it. She could just be cold. The thing I focused on in this picture is the cigarette. There was a time in history when it would not be this controversial, if at all, so the cigarette, passe or not, makes it that much more interesting. Let’s face it: vices are often sexy.
January 28, 2009 at 9:48 am
What a beautiful picture. Very photo-journalistic. And almost voyeuristic. One of my favorites.
January 28, 2009 at 10:35 am
While I don’t wish to promote smoking, I don’t think this shot would look as beautiful if she didn’t have that cigarette in her hand. I also like how she clutches the collar of her jacket. Wonderful
January 28, 2009 at 10:52 am
She’s a perfect crossover between Doutzen Kroes and Angelina Jolie.Love the picture, very classic.
The clothes are not that interesting though. But the picture itself is great!
January 28, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Europe is sexy!
January 28, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Sart, I’m not sure if you’ll permit a second comment, but I just wanted to clarify why I suggested that the girl would look more cosmopolitan if she were holding an ipod or something similar, in place of her cigarette: It seems to me that most of the women you’ve photographed, particularly in France and Italy, are always holding some piece of electronics. To me, this photo departs from that standard (not in a bad way; it’s still a lovely shot). That was why I felt that it was a bit incongruous with your other work, and that the cigarette seemed misplaced. (My “uppity self-righteous non-smoker” attitude notwithstanding. ;))
January 28, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Chic…so parisienne !
January 28, 2009 at 3:52 pm
o my gosh… very picture and imazing time zone so words no import!
January 28, 2009 at 5:19 pm
smart move to put it in black and white…and look at you in the mirror! very european… or at least the cliche made out of europe. but yeah.. it does show that way of being informal, very natural, not so neat. we are the best at doing that and ending up better than if polished.
January 28, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I love Black and white pictures and this one soo beautiful!!
January 28, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Same here! Love the dior bag!
January 29, 2009 at 3:59 am
I just love how each one of us looks at this photo, at this lovely Parisian girl and it all represents something theirs. It reflects everyone’s longings and desire to be a person this nonchalant and this grandstanding..
Love your work Scott. Thanks for this small enlightens every single day.
January 29, 2009 at 4:03 am

January 29, 2009 at 9:45 am
you met Robert Doisneau’s ghost in Paris, right?Lovely!
January 29, 2009 at 10:50 am
Absorbing, compelling, captivating.
I’d also like to weigh in on recreating her hairstyle (which I love): stop washing your hair everyday. It will be a lot more inclined to take a shape when your natural oils have a chance to work their way throughout.
January 29, 2009 at 12:20 pm
No more words can be added to add more to this photo, amazing, divine!

January 29, 2009 at 10:44 pm
I don’t know about Doutzen Kroes – I think this girl is the doppelganger of a girl from the last season of America’s Next Top Model (guilty pleasure!)… Analeigh somebody. But who cares who she is – it’s a beautiful shot!
January 29, 2009 at 11:40 pm
amazing photograph! when i close my eyes, this is who i want to be…
January 30, 2009 at 1:33 am
An extremely enigmatic image of a jeune fille.
January 30, 2009 at 5:17 am
This thing about decent women shouldn’t be smoking in the street or in public places (actually should not be seen smoking). I used to smoke and I remember my “Maman” was very angry about it (cancer thing etc.). She was driving us to school when she saw a girl smoking in the street. She said: “I hope at least that you are not smoking in the street. You’d look like a whore!”There are a lot of other things I’m not supposed to do but I still do… (like crossing my legs or other things boys can but girls certainly not – in my grand-mothers’ opinion-)= Classic French etiquette. My mother isn’t French but easily mistaken for a Parisienne because of her posh accent…
January 30, 2009 at 5:29 am
Nice picture by the way, especially the vespa mirror.
January 30, 2009 at 6:39 am

January 30, 2009 at 10:33 am
i believe that in this case, it is mainly the picture as a whole that gives this woman a certain vibe. you have captured her soul, this photograph is such a fine work of art.

An Amazing picture!! I love black and white. Wonder how it looks like in colors. I love her coat, it looks like she has taken her boyfriends coat or her fathers because of the shoulder seam all the way down her upper arm. I looove it! I’l go to my closest vintage shop tomorrow and look for one. Yes and also how do one get the hair like that? So it does not fall down. Did the do look good from all angles?

This picture is taken absolutely beautifully. but i can't help but think that it warns people of the dangers of smoking. she's young and beautiful but she looks like shes going to keel over at any moment from all that smoking.
July 9, 2009 at 10:05 pm
reminds me of a young Angelina Jolie.Love the protected body language of this shot, it makes the coat appear to be very precious to her…. wonderful.
August 23, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Enough already with the finger wagging about the smoking. Don't make me comment about rolled up Pilates bags making the legions look like urban snails…
