My mother has said over the years "gettin' old ain't for pussies." I interpret it to mean that I better have and maintain a solid foundation about most things when I reach old age. Your pictures lately have given me ideas on how to age beautifully so I can have that solid foundaton and not become a pussy.
This is the first time I comment on your website, this image is just perfect. I wanted to say that before I started looking at your blog a couple of months ago when my friend was given your book as a present, I had never been interested in fashion before. At all. The people you choose to photograph are amazing, but the way in which you photograph them is such a large part of that. You make each person appear extremely unique, and they are, but that comes across so well in your photos. Every picture conveys a character. You are truly doing an amazing job, and I have since given 'The sartorialist' book away as a present to people I know who appreciate design, but also great photography. You have made me love clothes, and realise how much they can do to bring out the uniqueness in each of us. Congratulations.
Maybe it's time for you to learn some italian, swedish and french. At least the basic frases that one might need to know: "Est'ce que je peux te photographer, s'il vous plaît?" "Du är jättevacker, får jag ta en bild på dig?" and so on. :)
I love monochrome looks, there is something very elegant about it and this women certainly pulls it off wonderfully. I also love the splash of color in the background with the flowers. Beautiful.
First thought: Margot Tenenbaum. I love seeing fur coats on such sylphlike women, since the intimidating notion of the 'fur coat' is softened by the fragile aesthetic.
an exceptional photo. because – finally – a picture of a senior and because of the composition. monochrome and flowered backdrop. kudos. i see you have another recent photo of an oldster. good. love it when you snap the real people, not only the "beautiful" people. real people photos are sart at his best…
I love the latest spike of older people on this blog- interesting and inspiring… This look is lovely, I love her hair and the way shee stands out from the flower stand.
She is not in her 60s, rather 70+. And this is how old ladies look in Milano (where I live). Most have this build and this attitude. And you may spot some on bikes – with the same outfit!
Also, on the lady with the scarf on head – this is old style scarf knotting, you still see it in countryside areas in traditional Europe.
Your shots of older people are tremendous. As you said, their fashion sense is based on their own reference points. I love the fact that their looks are, in the end, timeless and unique. Please keep these photos going.
What a shame you were unable to communicate. She's the kind of person we can all learn from, the most. A well of experience. Get a translator app for your phone and go find her!
Beautiful contrast between her monochrome and flowers. I'm glad she is not wearing Spartacus shoes etc. But seriously, isn't she is a retired ballerina from the Ballets Trocaderos de Monte Carlo?
Awesome photo, but I just can't understand how you don't speak ANY Italian (even the minimum to make a -deserved- compliment to the lady), assuming the time you spend in Milan! However, I'm still a fan :)
I think that your shoots during "normal days" are much better than the ones during fashion week. During "normal days" i feel they are closer to a big safari, and are much more uncommon, more original, more inspiring.
this women is already my style icon, and i haven't even seen her face! her poise is that of a ballerina, and just exudes class. Besides, her choice of fur is so soft! She is probably a dear.
i really appreciate your finding inspiration in the fashion of older generations. the simple elegance of this look makes me realize how overdone many "fashionistas" feel they need to be to achieve a level of chic. Well done and thank you!
