You should do more uniforms Scott. Some people wear them really well and some just shouldn't be there wearing them at all. Take the flight attendant for example. You should go out to JFK one day and capture some of those international crews departing. (not arriving…they will look too tired…haha) That airport has a whole world of airlines flying in and out of there. Imagine all the different uniforms you could capture.
She makes me think of Bob Dylan's song "What's a Sweetheart Like You Doing In A Place Like This." I continue to be impressed by your knack for finding beauty in all the places people are.

What is implicit in this image is the non-uniformity of the uniform. Anna dello and all the fashion world people are much more strait jacketed into their ridiculous almost clown-like fashion editor uniforms than this young woman. Dreads or no. The dreads themselves are a rebellion against uniformity…

Three questions: 1) Is she happy to be wearing her uniform, and to be working a job that imposes a visible identity on her? 2) If she smiles in her uniform, does that make it okay for us to appreciate (from our privileged perspective) the contrast between how she is forced to look at work and how she wishes she could look? 3) Would you have shot this girl in her full street clothes?
I just love your blog, having recently come upon it. It gives me license to be who I want to be and not adhere by strict uniform guidelines. I love to top off whatever I'm wearing with something that gives others pause. Just when they thought they knew me….ha!
I really agree with you.The best style comes from the inside…sometimes it really dosen´t matter what you wear,it means how you carry it.And anyway retro is back,so this uniform,looks good too.

I totally agree. I used to work for Dior and had to wear the same black uniform attire everyday, i have very eclectic style so i could not handle not adding my own flair. Good for this girl!!!! She looks adorable.

I find it interesting that uniforms are meant to be background to whatever is happening, so that cleaning, cooking, whatever the establishment doesn't want to be seen, is hidden. But she manages to transgress this by her funky attitude and her great hair. Uniforms are by their nature, defacing.
love that u brought the uniform topic up…have u heard about the uniform project? its about a girl in NYC who wore one dress for a whole year and styled it differently everyday to make a point in sustainability and fashion. and this exercise was done to also raise money for education of underprivileged children in India…i love the concept and she recently finished her 365 days in that dress… i ofcourse donated to her cause.. check it out
It's easy to catch the eye when one wears oh-so-deliberate eccentricity or stunning opulence, but this woman in everyday attire, her spirit shining forth is also and every bit as beautiful.

I agree with 'The Photodiarist'! In my high school, we had uniforms and everyone managed to make their statement, be it with the WAY you wore it, your jewelry, hairstyle… Another interesting point is people who dress within the 'boundaries of a code' for religeous reasons – yet they manage to be individualistic as well, with colors, patterns, and attention to detail. Great stuff!
We'd rather talk about rules we need to break to make good fashion than rules we need to follow no ? Fashion needs to evolve, that's why we need to investigate more in order to produce good fashion and not to be turning around and always come back to "good old fashion". Rules need to be learned to be broken no ?
Beautiful photo, beautiful woman. As someone mentioned earlier, many people either overlook workers in service jobs or see them as office fixtures, not as human beings. (Unfortunately, that attitude often infects their behavior toward workers as well.) Thanks for SEEING this woman, creating art with her, and putting her photo right alongside those of the bourgie (and, honestly, boring) women of Milano below.
Great dreads. Yes, unifroms are great for showing the someone's style in a subtle way–it sort of gives hints but leaves an air of mystery there as well. I love it here in Australia how with some of the more relaxed public schools the kids have to wear a uniform but are still able to show some of their own style and character. So you can get interesting juxtapositions such as dreads or a vintage tooled leather belt with formal grey trousers and a crisp white shirt. Usually as long as things are in school colours it's deemed ok.
One of your best shots, ever. It is easy to shoot cool people from the fashion world, but it is very difficult to catch an image like this one where style grows out of a person with an ordinary job. Monica
I've been reading your blog for a while and I am truly a fan of your work but I just can not agree this time. Of course it is about taste and finding someone "stylish" is a subjective manner, but I do not see how is this outfit "playing with the boundaries of a code". She is beautiful in the sense that every person is beautiful in his or her individuality but it is just a uniform and she didn't add anything to it. It's a photo of a girl looking sweet in uniform but not a person playfully altering her clothes.

I have read this blog for a long time and never needed to comment, but as a person who worked in a uniform for years, I just have to say that it can be so easy to not even try when you know you can't control your own wardrobe. I always tried to find ways to be unique, but never did it as well as her. Great photo and intriguing girl.

Speaking of uniforms, I am one of those people who dreads getting dressed in the morning if I've already worn the only two or three outfits that I actually like for the week. I would love to have a uniform that I could wear pretty much every day, with only minor variations here and there. Why is it so hard to find more than a few things that I like to wear? I am an artist, so I suppose I could get away with wearing the same thing almost every day and chalk it up to quirkiness. Or poverty. Or both! :)

I love the uniqueness that one can put into a uniform look intended to make you blend in. Rather than making you blend in, when you add your own style, like this lady did, you become what I would call an average everyday icon of this day and age.

I have a hunch that part of her confidence/happiness is her knowledge that she's not going to be working jobs like that (back breaking labor) forever. She's clearly going places.

the thing that makes her stand out is that she's cute and know how to strike a pose. it has nothing to do with how she wears the uniform or her style.
she would have stood out anyway, no matter the context or the way she was dressed.
put her in a high fashion dress and she would still be an interesting subject.

Three questions:
1) Is she happy to be wearing her uniform, and to be working a job that imposes a visible identity on her?
2) If she smiles in her uniform, does that make it okay for us to appreciate (from our privileged perspective) the contrast between how she is forced to look at work and how she wishes she could look?
3) Would you have shot this girl in her full street clothes?

I find it interesting that uniforms are meant to be background to whatever is happening, so that cleaning, cooking, whatever the establishment doesn't want to be seen, is hidden. But she manages to transgress this by her funky attitude and her great hair. Uniforms are by their nature, defacing.

I agree with 'The Photodiarist'! In my high school, we had uniforms and everyone managed to make their statement, be it with the WAY you wore it, your jewelry, hairstyle…
Another interesting point is people who dress within the 'boundaries of a code' for religeous reasons – yet they manage to be individualistic as well, with colors, patterns, and attention to detail.

Yes, unifroms are great for showing the someone's style in a subtle way–it sort of gives hints but leaves an air of mystery there as well.
I love it here in Australia how with some of the more relaxed public schools the kids have to wear a uniform but are still able to show some of their own style and character. So you can get interesting juxtapositions such as dreads or a vintage tooled leather belt with formal grey trousers and a crisp white shirt. Usually as long as things are in school colours it's deemed ok.

I've been reading your blog for a while and I am truly a fan of your work but I just can not agree this time. Of course it is about taste and finding someone "stylish" is a subjective manner, but I do not see how is this outfit "playing with the boundaries of a code".
She is beautiful in the sense that every person is beautiful in his or her individuality but it is just a uniform and she didn't add anything to it. It's a photo of a girl looking sweet in uniform but not a person playfully altering her clothes.

Speaking of uniforms, I am one of those people who dreads getting dressed in the morning if I've already worn the only two or three outfits that I actually like for the week. I would love to have a uniform that I could wear pretty much every day, with only minor variations here and there. Why is it so hard to find more than a few things that I like to wear? I am an artist, so I suppose I could get away with wearing the same thing almost every day and chalk it up to quirkiness. Or poverty. Or both! :)

Pour moi c'est vraiment une BELLE photo car nous avons tendance à être peiné face aux femmes de ménages ou aux personnes qui s'occupe de la propreté, mais contrairement à nos croyance, ici, cette jeune femme à l'air épanouie.
