It takes attitude to pull off seersucker shorts and not look ridiculous.
I love the dress in the first pic. I have no idea what fabric that is but it looks light and perfect for summertime dancing.
I also loved the dress in the third pic. So detailed and ladylike but still cool & comfortable enough to wear in modern times. I'd almost swear that's Gwyneth Paltrow.
July 19, 2010 at 9:22 am
Wow! What a fantastic series. The first and last photos are my favorites. You've conveyed such joy in the pictures that it is infectious. Black and white was also a fantastic choice. Awesome work.
July 19, 2010 at 9:26 am

Oh I love this annual event, for the fantastic coverage on your blog.
I think the dress in the first picture is from H&M actually.

You're whole blog is about being classy. I love it.
July 19, 2010 at 10:08 am
I love these images and style. I'm trying to find more references like these for a party theme. Any recommendations?
July 19, 2010 at 10:09 am
YOU`RE THE BEST!
The Man from Amsterdam
I believe the gentleman in the bottom picture is "Dr Dan", one of the most sartorially-minded individuals ever to dance the Lindy Hop (the original form of swing dance from the '30s). I've never seen him *not* dressed well/not dressed vintage.
July 19, 2010 at 10:12 am
This is how I would like the rest of my summer to look please.

July 19, 2010 at 10:59 am
I love how, though the pictures take me to a time I can only imagine and would love to have lived in, there is a touch of modern in each: a sandal in the first, the filtered cigarette in the second, a plastic bottle in the third, and what looks to be a reusable tote bag in the last.
July 19, 2010 at 11:04 am
Great pictures! I think the black and white is a good choice here. The 1st one is just perfect!
LOVE THESE! Don't you think she looks a little like Gwyneth?
I really wanted to share so have blogged these with a link.
Let me know if you want me to take them off. xx
July 19, 2010 at 11:06 am
The photos from this event last year are some of my all-time favorites of yours. I'm so glad to see it's back!
Really wonderful to see how current these styles still are (although a lot of that is a function of the dressers themselves, not the clothes).
Thanks so much!
July 19, 2010 at 11:13 am
What a great party. I want to be there! I love, love the seersucker.
Lovely pictures! I've had the Jazz Age on my mind lately for a paper at uni and these pictures really will help me envision them more clearly. Thanks for posting these!

Love the rolled up seersucker shorts and hat in the second photo! The drink adds a nice touch but not the cigarette. Makes such a nice ensemble smell badly.
July 19, 2010 at 11:17 am
How can I join them?
Olivine sur les pavés de Paris
Oh yes ! Again ! I really love this event ! The photos you took last year were awesome.

Great photos. I always look forward to this series.
These photo's are gorgeous, and the fashion pieces, timeless.
July 19, 2010 at 12:12 pm
I remember the photos of last year, they surpass them in elegant and beautiful.
July 19, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Great Shots, Sart!
Makes me wish I was in New York right now, in my seersucker swag with my Panama and spectator brogues on!
I remember that Asian kid in the second photo on the roster for GQ last year (?) for best dressed man in America. How is he doing being a young throwback in a world of sweatpants and baseball caps? It would be nice to see a profile on him. I enjoyed his take on dressing like a gentleman and standing out for his individuality.
BTW, dig the crisp look of the first photo. Speaks volumes in spite of the black and white.
July 19, 2010 at 12:25 pm
I love the black an whites they give and old era feel to something that is rather recent.
July 19, 2010 at 12:26 pm

WOW…what style, what fun what AMAZING shots!

OK, this first picture is awesome. Love the guy, he seems on his tip toes. And what a stylish dancer. I want to be there.
July 19, 2010 at 1:36 pm
When somebody like you who have the "it" artistic factor, there is no mistake. Great shots! (I loved them all but the guy in the first photo, with his bright white teeth and the exact moment you took it is awesome.)
July 19, 2010 at 1:39 pm
did i just think gatsby? because those pictures incredible.
Such beautiful pictures! They look like they're from an entirely different time.
July 19, 2010 at 1:47 pm
These photographs truly are picturesque, and some of your best work. They do a remarkable job of demonstrating what fashion is all about, while simultaneously capturing the personalities behind the clothes. I love that you chose black and white. Beautiful work.
July 19, 2010 at 1:52 pm
Love the dancers in first photo.
July 19, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Ah ! This works so well in black and white ! Specialy the first one. Marvellous !
July 19, 2010 at 2:13 pm
If I could go back in time to any era, I'd pick the Jazz and Art Deco period. From fashion to architecture to art, it looks so liberating and yet conforming to standards of excellence…
July 19, 2010 at 2:22 pm
This looks like so much fun!
July 19, 2010 at 2:30 pm

These people look absolutely wonderful! I love the movement in the first photo, and the dreamy mood of the second photo. The energy from these photos is so vibrant and alive. They make me want to dance too!
July 19, 2010 at 5:21 pm
Love the black and white photos!
July 19, 2010 at 5:33 pm
This continues to be one of the most delightful things I've ever seen. Beautiful photography. Sorry to have missed you in Denver during your shoot for GQ! We almost flew back from holiday in Ojai to be 'customers' for the day. I guess you can say we like your work!
July 19, 2010 at 7:13 pm
The movement and joy captured in the first one is especially stunning. Makes me want to hop up and begin dancing. Shooting it in black and white adds to the striking graphic quality of the photo. It's one of the more memorable ones you have taken, and you have taken MANY!
July 19, 2010 at 9:24 pm
I always love looking at the pictures from this party!
July 19, 2010 at 9:35 pm
Love the movement in the first photo. Gentleman in the last photo looks like Maurice Chevalier [if he'd only worn a bow tie].
July 19, 2010 at 10:06 pm
By far one of my favorite posts! Thank you so much for these incredible photos, they are AMAZING!
July 19, 2010 at 10:08 pm
i love all these images!
July 19, 2010 at 10:30 pm
I love the girls sweet white dress and hat. Lovely!
July 19, 2010 at 10:37 pm
Oh, I've been waiting for these! I don't see why we can't dress like this all the time, many of the people in these pix do. You don't have to look selfconsciously retro, you just need an awareness of creating a seasonally- and event-appropriate ensemble and love accessories like hats and cravats. And what better summer fabric than seersucker? Honestly, if our parents/grandparents could take workwear like jeans into the everyday, why can't we return a little polish and care and joy? I also think if we danced every day to live music we would all be happier.
July 19, 2010 at 11:23 pm
The gentleman in the 2nd photograph (Ray) is a good friend of mine and has been captured by The Sartorialist's lens many times. There was a comment above about Ray being in GQ's Best dressed men in America. You were absolutely on point! He was dead-center of the photograph in that article. He is always dressed to kill.EXCELLENT!
July 19, 2010 at 11:52 pm
The photo of the young woman laughing melts me and delights me. Thank you thank you thank you.
July 20, 2010 at 12:22 am
These are amazing! They just ooze fun!!! …Ooze fun? :/… Well, they do!
July 20, 2010 at 12:52 am
I was there! The dancing flapper girl actually had on hightop black Chucks, it was a really fresh look in contrast to all the skin-colored t-strap heels I was seeing.
Clearly I need to step up my game to make it into Sart's viewfinder…maybe next time!
The whole "story" is elegant. Seersucker, 2 tone shoes wingtips/cap toes, linen, rayon/silk dresses, straw boaters, cloches — I Want! All lovely.
July 20, 2010 at 2:01 am
I want to live in these photos, forever and ever.
July 20, 2010 at 2:07 am
I LOVE these. They are such a visual pleasure, especially the first and the fifth picture. The frozen movement is just perfection.
Odd to see a woman wearing Fit Flops in picture 5 though. She's a few decades too early! ;)
July 20, 2010 at 2:18 am
July 20, 2010 at 2:35 am
Can't people dress like this all the time? I always look at old photo albums and wonder,"why did everyone look so good back then? why don't people look like that now?" I found the reason: people need their class back. Dress nicely and your features will follow suit.

July 20, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Are you kidding me? The shot of the couple dancing actually gave me the same thrilling feeling you get in your stomach when flying down a hill on a bike with no hands. I want a print of this. It looks almost like the type of shot that would take hours and teams of experts to stage, but then there are these lovely imperfection–his off-kilter bow tie, the sweat coming through his shirt, the scrape on her knee. But look at his feet!! You caught him at a weightless moment. Is he on his way up or down? Who cares. It's brilliant!!
July 20, 2010 at 3:09 pm
the pictures are stunning!all those people look so happy and joyfull
July 20, 2010 at 3:33 pm
If you missed it this weekend, it's happening again on the weekend of August 28/29. Definitely worth the trip – it was so much fun! I'm sad I'll be away that weekend and can't go again. And no, I don't work for them. I just had such a great time, I encourage people to go take advantage.

Love these photos! Love your blog! Thanks for bringing us daily inspiration like this. xo
July 20, 2010 at 4:53 pm
These pictures look like they could be from a different time. Very clever decision to put the majority of them up in black and white…I was always surprised to see the colored shot, had to remind myself that these photos are modern! :)
July 20, 2010 at 5:10 pm
True style, I love all these photos
July 20, 2010 at 6:22 pm
Again I echo what I posted in the above photos–all of them are gorgeous. The movement in the first photo is infectious–ohh, those legs!Smoking is so wrong so I hate to admit the 2nd photo is superb with that cigarette. The hat and dress on that lady sit so perfectly on her and she is dancing with that laugh. I love the suit and tie in the last photo–double breasted is underrated these days–and this one fits so flatteringly. Thanks Sart–your photos allowed me a little bit of real fantasy this morning.

All white outift with shorts, cap, and spectator shoes is just perfect. Great photo.
Gary Grant at the end is also very fine. Is there anything more beautiful on a man in the summer than a suit like this?

Its my Grandfather and Father! Inspirational. Some comments consistently include desire to come to N.Y. to experience that which is seen in this site. Even in NY it is rare to see. Create it where you live! (the grass is always greener….) Spread the joy, beautify your world!

I feel like I'm looking at a storyboard of The Great Gatsby. Gorgeous photographs.
July 22, 2010 at 11:37 pm
This jazz section optimizes New York for me. I don't really notice the clothes but notice the peoples smiles and body language. New yorkers are the most vibrant lovely creatures I have ever met.
Beautiful mix of people.
July 23, 2010 at 4:48 am
This looks like a scene from a film -or someone's (jazz age!)video diary. makes me envious of such a day and such style. thank you for sharing
July 23, 2010 at 8:47 am
FABULOUS!!! Reminds me that there is still a group within our generation that longs for the times of elegance and class… 2 thumbs up!
July 23, 2010 at 9:06 am
this is just AMAZING on so many levels..
July 23, 2010 at 2:36 pm
Fact: Seersucker shorts are awesome.
Though I don't know if I like the monocolored outfit of the man in the first photo. (Maybe it's not all white, just in B&W)
July 23, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Love the outfit. Reminds me of The Great Gatsby!
July 23, 2010 at 9:14 pm
To find more of this kind of thing, come out to the Dunsmuir Estate in Oakland, CA on Sunday Septemeber 12, 2010 to the Art Deco Society of Northern California's Gatsby Summer Afternoon. Step back in time to the 1920s and 1930s to mingle and picnic with over five hundred folks all in vintage or vintage-inspired garb, with their vintage picnics, admiring the many antique automobiles, whilst listening and dancing to the tunes of the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. An annual tradition for over 25 years.
July 24, 2010 at 12:18 pm
I can't stop thinking about how fun these pictures are. Love them!
July 24, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Aside from the fact that I love the fashion and style of the people in all the pictures you take, I just have to say that you take wonderful pictures in general, capturing beautiful moments, I always look forward to seeing what's new on here… you're totally awesome :)
July 25, 2010 at 6:15 pm
