She's most definitely unstoppable. But in that outfit, she could stop anything. Love it. But my favorite part of her whole look are her sunglasses. Hello! How brilliant are those.
Dear Scott, I love this picture. Its because of you and Garance I know women like Anna Dello Russo and a few other trend setters. My whole outlook on fashion has changed for the better. I thank you for your amazing work. - Jayanthi
Such a great lace jumpsuit! I think there is nothin more feminine than lace for a woman^^ and moreover, she assumes it down the street! Such a great woman^^ Love it!!
This is so wild, so daring. I'm not sure it would fly here in somewhat tame Chicago. But it would be easy to sew. You'd want to use stretch lace…and now that I think about it..this dress is probably made from stretch lace. I don't see how it woul hug the body otherwise. And it wouldn't be comfortable against bare skin. You could also wear a contrast one-piece underthing…even something with leggings. I'd love to try this sometime. Maybe I will! I love stretch lace and sewing it is a piece o' cake!
Wow. Wow! Bold look. I wonder where she's going in an outfit like this. And is that her underwear, or her bikini because she's just coming from the beach?
I'm always intrigued by photos of this woman. Her face isn't traditionally beautiful, and she doesn't try to look nineteen. But the body, the mane, the confidence, and the clothing make her a stunner.
I envy of her confidence, that´s for sure :-! I am very interested in those underwear/bikini, she wears unterneath the dresses. I saw the black-red combo from the back, and the cut of the panty ist great. It covers the bottom completely, but this makes the whole thing even more sexier.
There's nothing more attractive that true confidence. I meet a lot of Italians who have this trait – maybe it's because they're adored from day one! It takes guts to own a look like this and she's got them. Awesome.
I would say her walk and smile while flaunting it is what hits it out of the ballpark :) If anyone dared to put that on, I'm sure they wouldn't have that much confidence to sell the show!
I love it, except for earrings and sunglasses. Those I don't get. The glasses seem wrong for her type of face, they're somehow too high and elton john, they almost dehumanize her, and certainly de-elegantize, so to speak. But the dress is marvellous, underwear, shoes, bag, figure, movement, great.
Beautiful model and beautiful dress to wear – to the beach! (Seriously, who – other than beach models and hookers – can wear this to a professional job!)
Gotta love Italy. Where else could a woman be dressed like that and a man have a direct line of sight of her and not be staring? The man in the background is just continuing his day — like the sight of beautiful woman in a white lace outfit is unremarkable. I assume that's her driver, but still.
wow. I love her so much, this is not an easy look to pull off and she does it to perfection. Being beautiful and having a fantastic figure no doubt helps, but it is her confidence that does it. X
Bold. Confident. All that. But not appropriate. I wonder about a personality that needs that much attention. Are there no limits? Maybe this is "fashion", but to me it's not style.
She is definitely one of the bravest dressers out there. Her confidence in herself to pull off these Dolce and Gabbana is amazing. She's an inspiration. :)
Montreal has a lot of fashion going on but I don't think you'd ever see this walking down Sherbrooke St. into Holt Renfrew. Come to think of it, not even trendy St. Laurent.
I think this looks awful and she just looks a bit like a slave to fashion-you know, wearing "trendy" things as opposed to what actually looks good and suits her. Don't get me wrong though, I love Anna Dello Russo and this is the first time I've actually disliked her outfit.
glad to see anna's back!!! this is very appropiate for milan's heat these days -if you have the confidende to wear it!- i'd say this is also very carrie bradshaw
it's times like these where i wish i didn't use the word ' amazing ' as much as i do . anna dello russo is truly amazing . this outfit is gorgeous , and she is incredibly confident . she looks absolutely stunning , love it !
The sunglasses are too much. I'm usually in love with all the looks on this blog but this is bold accessorized with more bold and it's just overwhelming. I can however appreciate how happy and confident she looks.
woke up this morning to news of fellow sarters' elopment tomorrow. and, walla, here in all her glory, our hero, our beloved favorite "Anna" in inspiring DG WHITE lace. off we go for an interpretation of the "wedding" version! You are so fun Sart! Annabella
a body-defining lace dress will leave a permanent impression burned into the male brain! It has happened to me only a few times, this is one. My wife knows my jaw will drop when she emerges from her dressing room in a certain black one. If you have the shape for it it is marvelous. Perhaps a body stocking with this one, no?
the dress is beautiful and there definitely could have been better ways to wear it. do think jewellery n shades could definitely have been better, and white underwear or a body suit might have been nicer. but this is still ok because first it is ok and second she is smiling and third she has a good body (that helps a lot). the picture reflects a moment where we look past certain aspects and still enjoy the overal aesthetic effect.
I love the print of the lace almost as much as I love her strength and confidence. I don't think this is an easy look to carry off but she does it with ease, confidence, and a smile.
…..well, I remember way back in 1973 in my small suburban school in Toronto, I was sixteen and quite shocked when a decidedly sexy and inappropriately clad student sauntered down the corridor along to her next class in a black lace, form fitting, one piece jumpsuit with nothing more underneath than the same black bra and undies that Anna Dello Russo sports today under her pretty…but old hat…lace dress.
Lovely? Yes. Fun? Yes. Worthy of all the over the top exaltations of joy in your readers comments? Not really.
I think that the “merletto sul regipetto e mutantini” number required more confidence and bravado back then, 37 years ago, then on today’s "strade di Milano".
Just saying….(to coin a phrase from my daughter’s newspeak).
i know she can be glamorous and daring and all that but there's something that makes me go a bit tired of her. maybe because she's been all over the web these days. and i agree with one of the earlier commenters. her outfit is not age-appropriate.
what makes this awesome? glasses, amazing mane, fabulous smile and energy, and the high neck+long sleeves+completely transparent lace combo. this lady is fabulous incarnate
This outfit made me smile. So bold, intricate, contrast of the black underwear against the white, the shades are awesome!
One of those pairings that would either put you on best or worst-dressed lists at the same time, but who cares, it's a free country, and she is so free
what's not to love about this? btw someone mentioned a dog?? also someone commented about channelling gaga – forgive me but i simply fail to see the appeal of the woman ..
I can imagine this outfit on any number of the stunning women to be found in Port of Spain ( Trinidad)days prior to Carnival – hot. By the same token the same dress on the same woman during lent ( straight after carnival) would prompt much opprobrium.
So as with much else it's as much about context as content.
the lace dress is lovely, her body is great but this truly a case of the clothes being a costume and a means of attention seeking. true confidence is wearing daring clothes that have depth and style rather than just shock value. The glasses and the black undergarments are what I expect from a 19 college dropout trying to "find" themselves not from a women who already knows herself.
The black and white association in this case is not the best one. Perhaps a little to classic I dont like the black underwear but the dress is great ! The sunglasses are not also the good ones. But she seems so happy so that's the most important !
I'm sorry but i think that this woman is not the embodiement of elegance, at least on this photo ! Just because her name is Anna Dello Russo everybody see in her a kind of fashion goddess. Sometimes she may have style sometimes not. Everybody is so enthusiastic about her style on this photo, and i really do not understand why !
white lace dress, pink sunglasses & black underwear??? i cant’t think of anyone who could rock this combination the way Anna Dello Russo has rocked it!!!
Oh please, I know, the dress is great…amazing! but it's the second or the third time that she wears the same outfit (obvuisly with a different dress, diffrent underwear and different shoes) anyway the idea is the same, and it's boring.
to me ana has a great and a unique sense of style, but…even being thin she's not young anymore neither a beautiful woman. so i really dislike this kind of look on her.
Am I the only one that feels like her outfit is a little too much (or too little)? The lace dress is stunning, but I think it would be better with more demure undergarments. Right now it just screams, "I need attention!"
Love that she can pull off the daring dress, love the shoes/bag, love the confidence.
But the other accessories are out of whack. The necklaces and earrings look random and cheap. At first glance I liked the sunglasses just because they're unusual, but paired with this dress…. meh.
This is definitely a winner. As I sit in a coffee shop in LA, I am noticing more and more lace in even the casual attire of ladies. I think Ms. Russo owns this look which transcends geographical boundaries. Lace is the new black!
It's nice she's enjoying herself but I'm bothered by her not understanding that the context for this outfit is really askew. This is a long, long way from sequins in daytime or evening shorts. There's something sadly bipolar about it…others have mentioned Gaga and Spears…
I like the glasses, the shoes and the purse. The bikini and gigantic doily cover-up are just plain fugly.
I wonder if the comments about this outfit would be quite so adoring if the wearer were an unknown pedestrian, and not a fashion-industry power broker.
this style is just too much. i'd be freaking out if i see a person actually dress like this in the street. walking around showing your underwear is now fashion? it's so horrible.
I read a comment "Fashion, not style". Do you often see people with such an amazing personnality? I mean, she often wears amazing clothes and stunning things, a bit too much, with a lot of jewelry, she keeps smiling and have a great self confidence. I don't see people like this around me… It's not just fashion, it's style, no doubt for me.
Either you love this outfit or not, if you find it too much or not, you cannot say that she's just doing the same as so many "fashionistas" on the street. She assumes. Too much, yes. Fashion is a game, she plays nice.
I think this look (minus the accessories) would work beautifully for a night out dancing in the company of other folks happily flying their freak flags; for day… just… no. It looks desperately attention-seeking and, frankly, sort of silly in this context. Hate the glasses & jewelry, too–looks like an homage to the '80s done badly.
I am, however, puzzled by the "age inappropriate" comments… why shouldn't a woman wear the types of clothing she loves, whatever her age? It's one thing to attempt to literally look younger than one is–that is, to try to pass oneself off as something one is not; that's just sad. But simply maintaining one's core personal style as the years go on is quite another.
She's just so…life enhancing. Always seems so full of joie de vivre and love of what she does. She's an inspiration for that alone, even without the amazing outfits.
Diana Vreeland said that "a little bit of bad taste is better than no taste at all." But the operative words was "little." Vulgar. What is the Milanese slang for "hoochie mama?"
This reminds me of that scene in "Gone With the Wind" in which Scarlett O'Hara runs up a dress from her old green velvet curtains–although in this case the dress was made from my auntie's old lace tablecloth. Take away the context–the Milanese setting, the hired car–and she looks like Vegas "hostess."
WOW! Anna is AMAZING!! There's no other like her.. I feel like Alicia Silverstone would channel her inner ADR for a Clueless remake and she's be fabulous!
Oh My!!! I like the material. See through is not easy to do. This is densely constructed material with gaps. I like this better than sheer gauze material that simply shows everything.
She's fab but her outfit is way too costumey as worn. She'd look so much sexier with a slip worn underneath. As is, she's a bit too much of an exhibitionist (and too old for the look as well!)
i love it. the sunglasses tell us that she is in on it, and she is not taking it too seriously. fierce, sexy and a sense of humor. at her age and with her style, she knows EVERYTHING that everybody is going to say, from the good to the bad, and she doesn't care b/c she loves it and is going to wear it anyhow! love that!
I think she looks amazing even though I think her outfit is heinous. It's all about the personality and being someone who can wear that outfit well, because a lace cover up over underwear would not fly if she wasn't famous. She has a rockin bod, though, and those sunglasses are something else!
There's an absolute genius to this outfit. The silly glasses save it from being merely risque/chic. Thanks to those big pink frames the whole look is saucy and playful!
Completely agree with the comment 'fashion not style'. I think the idea is unique conceptually but is not a winning example of style and particularly of elegance as professed in many comments. To draw the nerd card here for a moment, the origin of the word elegant is from late 15th Century France and was used to describe a person dressing tastefully. Is she dressing tastefully? The outfit and the photo have a striking impact on the viewer and, as per usual, Scott Schuman has posted a great photo – not only because of the impact it has but also because of the starkly contrasting opinions it brings forth and the discussion that ensues.
Oh, ok, wow. That's the issue I have; serious guts, apparently. I have an American Apparel dress that is sheer lace, lovely, and still hanging in my closet – tags attached. I suppose I should just stop thinking, and start wearing!
to me that is just terrible. i am sorry, but that dress is an absolute no go. and those glasses: terrible! i do not disagree often with the styles on this blog. but this time i strongly do so…
Really??? To the most of you…really !?!? I agree with cociolph.I have seen her in better and classier outfits…this one is one of the most inappropriate looks a woman in her age should wear. Better next time , ms Russo.
oh come on … I know she's an icon and whatnot, but this just isn't a great example. the (otherwise lovely) dress looks tacky, not to mention those sunnies.
I admire her confidence, it is a lovely dress. Not sure about the underwear rather than a black slip, say… However, were this not in the realm of 'fashion' I do not think the comments would be so positive….
cociolph – but, the thing is, she is a powerhouse. A fashion industry princess. So, therefore, a trendsetter. She has earned the respect and the right to wear what she wants and, quite frankly, this is a fierce, feministic statement. I find her strong and powerful. Everything about this outfit is top notch. The shoes are gorgeous. The see-though lace and bikini are a strong statement. The clutch is classy. The lace is vintage-esque. The sunglasses add a stunning pop of color while still holding onto classic shape. The earrings and necklaces are fabulously chosen. Her hair left down and natural looking is perfect. To top it all off, she is happy. And that is wonderful.
I can't believe some people said that it's inappropriate for her age! I see old woman older than Anna wear tight, tacky looks that only teenagers would wear everyday! Anna looks amazing in this dress and she's definitely not an attention-seeker! Have you seen her previous outfits at all? She's very true to her personal style! And if she has a body like that at her age, who cares? She can show it as much as she wants! I love it!
I really hate this. I'm sorry, but whenever your underwear can be seen, it's a no-no for me. She looks like she's wearing a giant tablecloth too. I don't like the shades, but the necklaces are passable and I can't see much of the little bag. Her shoes are rather boring, but I like how carefree she looks in this.
Seems like an outfit not unlike the photo of the man with the grey underwear… dressed to make the people around her uncomfortable and forcing them/us into a position of voyeurs. Hard to imagine any gathering where that outfit would have been a classy choice. Those of you who know her personally, is she a Narcissist?
I don't like this outfit — I don't care who's wearing it. even Madonna looks ridiculous in the same kind of thing. I don't care if you have a great figure, this is not flattering or classy. The glasses are funny, but also not flattering. The one thing I like is her attitude.
I don't know. The dress is gorgeous and the bikini covers what's important. On the beach it would be a great look. In the city, it's a little tacky. Feel free to call me provincial, but she's no Erika (from July 20th).
I dream about being able to wear whatever I want when the weather dictates. Right on, sister! If you can do it occasionally and with such style, by all means, mix it up.
it does not look daring, but cheap. the lace of course is exquisite, but the pink dangling earrings with the pink, silly glasses make it look like my 14 year old's girlfriends. not inspiring. maybe with a black slip dress and some kelly green glasses, no earrings….
Strikingly beautiful is what came to my mind when i saw this photograph. Though, on another person(maybe a pop star) i think it would be perceived as trashy and low class. You have to have a certain confidence to pull this off and you have to have fun with fashion and by the smile on her face i believe she is has both.
We need the ADR's of this world to show people that style is inherent and highly personal – it's not a given just to wear designer clothing. Fashion designers need people to interpret their work and she is an artist of fashion.
To all the anonymous posters here who are bagging it as "trashy" or "bipolar" and "age inappropriate" etc – discriminate much? ADR is extraordinary and anyone who doesn't get it…just doesn't.

This is the best look I've seen on her!!
Her style is great, but in other photos she often looks stiff, underfed, & with bad posture– too "social x-ray" to use Tom Wolfe's term.
Here she's got a playfulness going that screams joie de vivre rather than 'cigarettes and Tab.'
I love everything about this outfit except there are too many baubles going on for my taste. Keep the black necklace & the shades, and lose the rest.
It works well to have such a conservative cut, line, and length to the dress in contrast to the lace & lingerie.

a body-defining lace dress will leave a permanent impression burned into the male brain! It has happened to me only a few times, this is one. the dress is beautiful and there definitely could have been better ways to wear it. do think jewellery n shades could definitely have been better, and white underwear or a body suit might have been nicer. but this is still ok because first it is ok and second she is smiling and third she has a good body (that helps a lot). the picture reflects a moment where we look past certain aspects and still enjoy the overal aesthetic effect.

This dress is completely out of context with her surroundings. Stupid.

Oh My!!! I like the material. See through is not easy to do. This is densely constructed material with gaps. I like this better than sheer gauze material that simply shows everything.

She's fab but her outfit is way too costumey as worn. She'd look so much sexier with a slip worn underneath. As is, she's a bit too much of an exhibitionist (and too old for the look as well!)

i love it. the sunglasses tell us that she is in on it, and she is not taking it too seriously. fierce, sexy and a sense of humor. at her age and with her style, she knows EVERYTHING that everybody is going to say, from the good to the bad, and she doesn't care b/c she loves it and is going to wear it anyhow! love that!

No. I don't like it. On anyone else it'd be laughed at, and I'm betting some poor souls will attempt to emulate her and BE laughed at.
It does look like old lace curtains/old lace tablecloth.

Yeah, baby! This woman is having a blast. What does it take to wear an expensive lace tablecloth over your black undies:
- a sense of humor
- a fearless {shameless} sense of style
- balls
- a great body
And Anna has it all.

cociolph – but, the thing is, she is a powerhouse.
