theres a light on him that isnt there in the second picture? sunlight? love the two contrasting images, and how he conveys a real sense of self in his demeanour and attire :D
This reminds me, as an old man told me on the street the other day, to "be happy darling!" And I love the vertical coordination of colors in hat/necklace/belt.
What a great idea to combine camo with colour. Except the fat bling ding ring is hideous – such jewellery seems to be quite popular in the US, which doesn´t make it better.
Thank you SO MUCH for the two starkly different expressions on this brother's face. Although I love reading the comments on this blog, I'm sometime's frustrated that commenters place too much emphasis on facial expression—as a way of "knowing" the subject. Snapshots only capture a brief moment in time. The two contrasting expressions here cement the idea, really, that you talked about in your interview on The Treatment: these are less photos of the subject, and more the momentary view of these subjects by you, Scott.
Lovely shots Scott. It's quite obvious summer is beginning to wain. I know it doesn't seem possible to those of us who live in the south, but you can see it in the light. The pitch of the sun is changing, the days are shorter, and the sun is taking longer to rise in the morning. And I can definitely see the change of light in your morning photographs. Both yesterday and todays shots are just beautiful, a certain softness that only comes from a great photographer and his use of light.
Now on to this gentleman. He is the bomb, love him. His outfit is soulful and perfect from head to toe. Great expressions, he appears to be a very loving a friendly fellow. Someone you'd like to meet, someone you'd definitely say hello to on the street and have a conversation. Happy!
The photos catch the Yin and the Yang of this gent. His Power Glare in the first shot tells you to stand back and his playful "Gotcha" in the second invites you in. The contrast of his demeanor mirrors the contrast in his style–the combat fatigues juxtaposed with the Ja Love vibe of his Rasta colors. It's quite wonderful. (Btw, there's a weird flare on his shirt on his left front about halfway down. What is that?)
You always seem to "capture" these stately looking African-American men on the street. They pose like crazy and look great in outfits that would look terrible on anyone else.
Scott, you've got it going on! (and you keep me from working too!)
Well, what really makes me tick here is how great that golden ring looks in his hand… I am not a fan or jewerly, I don't like big pieces of gold, but sometimes one thing like that looks great on a certain individual.
If I saw this man walking towards me I'd think ooo I like, so well coordinated, so neat, so unusual along with the head wrap…damn he looks cool. Then when he got close enough I'd flash him a coy smile, hoping he'd smile back and say hello. He makes me want to be a part of his world even for a millisecond.
fantastic picture! i love that you got his personality to come out in both shots, both in different ways. the second shot makes me smile. great character this man.
However, I've always been uncomfortable with camo as streetwear. If you're willing to serve your country in it, for better or worse, then have at it- it's a right that's earned.

It's funny that this picture is posted now. I love my people and how they represent themselves stylistically. This just gave me a confirmation i needed on how to proceed with my work. Thanks for the design intervention.
These two images together say a lot about the still magical powers of the camera and how, in the right hands, it can be an effective tool for breaching the tough exterior of an individual and for exposing precious inner beauty.
I love the camo look, it looks great done this way. He is definitely posing in the first picture, giving us his model's stare. The second photo is him saying, SEE, I was putting you on! As for the ring, necklace and the belt and hat, I think they're cute.
You know for a following that believes all that is Babylonian is next to the selling out of one's proverbial soul those are some pretty cool Babylonian boots he's sporting. I love them. love him! I believe in live and let live but always find it amusing to see bits of 'outside' the statement in an ensemble.
I seriously cannot stop smiling while looking at this gentleman! he reminds me of so many of my friends' uncles and even a couple of their dads. his spirit shows right through his beautiful smile. thanks for posting this one, i needed it.
