I love this guy! He always dresses a bit over the top, but I love the way he does it. He's got the khakis with the suit jacket, what we were seeing in your photos weeks ago from Europe. And the "Moc" type shoes. The green sweater over the shoulders is the killer, love it!
Love it, great outfit! I love when men wear their sweaters like that around their neck, I never see it in California but here in Buenos Aires it's quite common.
I love everything he has on (well, maybe not loving the highwaters too much) , but it's what he doesn't have on that is bothering me. I will never accept the notion of not wearing socks- simply on a practical level. Feet sweat, and shoes can give you callouses without protection. I just think that a nice pair of distinctive socks ALWAYS trump the "dare to be bare" look.
Granted the shorter pant length is in, but c'mon it hardly floods in Manhattan…or maybe I'm wrong. Great looks, but the pants should be longer, at least down to the ankles. That being said, the color combination, the fit, the textures, all work very well.
Yes, I must agree. You know you've got it when all you have to do is flash a little ankle. Why can't every man wear such a pant length? I don't think I'd be able to concentrate, on anything.
Great look. The bold jumper makes this look. I'm pretty sure it's courtesy of British knitwear manufacturer Huxley! http://www.huxleyclothing.co.uk/shop
I'm not fond of this shot, I don't like the hair, the length of the pants, or the sweater around his neck, which seems unnecessary. He's already wearing a nice jacket.
Im a guy and I personally like this new trend of shorter pant lengths, especially when they're cuffed.I feel ilke it adds something even to a simple pair of jeans
I'd lose the sweater. It looks like he is trying too hard. He has seen too many Sartorialist postings but still can't get it right. This guy would look much hotter in just a fitted T, blazer and regular length pants.
hmm. definitely not my favorite shot. ill have to echo the previous comments, it looks like he's trying way too hard. usually there's at least one good thing to take from a photo, but there really isn't much to like here.
as much as i like showing off ankles, the pants don't look natural on him at all, the sweater out of place. oh well, cant win em all!
The sweater around his neck does not work. Its obvious that he has no intention of wearing it. Perhaps the pocket square could have been bright green instead.
I also agree. I don't know. I've seen this look at least half a million times from others and I'm getting kind of tired of it. I'm not saying he doesn't look good, but…*sigh* Chinos, no socks, loafers, suit coat and some pop of color. *SIGH* okay, You look so business caszh.
cute boy, but geez those trousers are so short and so tight in the crotch they look painful! ha. i guess i should say "nice package" but i really shouldn't be forced to think that. totally distracting. and he utterly knows it.
I think it's important to consider context here. Yeah the green sweater over the coat is over the top, but he's at a Ralph Lauren show and looks like a Ralph Lauren model. Dude's job is to be over the top at this particular moment in time. Trying too hard? Better than not trying at all. I dig the ankles. I don't dig the "he needs socks comments". Get over it people. In his book Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion Bernhard Roetzel recommends that men go sockless when wearing mocs. Why? Ankles are sleek….if you have them. As for the flood, well I'd rather see a million dudes in Thom Browne-short pants than the masses of idiots wearing garbage bag sized attire, which is actually the norm. I'd take over-snug over over-large any day. I'm not forgetting pleasantly relaxed, but that's a very fine line. There is inspiration in this look. Not everyone's cup of tea, but the color combo is definitely on. And yeah, context.
He's beautiful. No socks is sexy & his ankles are beautiful and tanned. All feet don't sweat! The short pants suit him, the jacket and lime green sweater — terrific. Never cut your hair and the oh-so-cotroversial "tight crotch" — why not? I don't think he has anything to be ashamed of! Yes, this is a classic look and it's done a lot. But how can anyone be TIRED of it when someone like this carries it off? What's not to love?
This is obviously a very handsome and well dressed man. But sometimes (I guess this time) it feels to me he is a bit of a RL caricature, the green jumper a bit too well planned, pocket squares, short trousers, all perfectly stylish but this guy never conveys to me that unselfconscious style that your male Italian friends achieve so well. That's not to say I wouldn't look at him twice on the street!
If he had a more casual jacket and watch this look might work, but it's a bit discordant as is. A business jacket doesn't really go with an otherwise very Ivy League look.
I think he is a handsome man, love the sockless look (never wear 'em myself, even in winter) but the tightness of his pants makes them look as if they accidentally shrank in the wash, rather than a deliberate choice. As for the sweater, well, if you start off wearing it over your shirt and under your jacket, and you get too warm, where else are you going to wear it?
pants are not too short per se but they might be too short with such a formal blazer/jacket. I guess I would need to see fabrics to make a real judgment. Something just seems off balance to me.
I thought the whole preppy look was about seeming NOT to try too hard. The real preppies (I'm not one, so just speculating here) must be rolling on the floor laughing at this, especially the pants crotch.
i think accessories should be great watch, belt a scarf a hat but i just don't get the sweater it seems like he tried to hard! but i do love a man who does not wear socks!
he works for the company, lol. i forget what he does. when i watch the product knowledge videos, he's the one explaining it all. i like the length. i roll my jeans and pants to/above the ankles… mainly to show off my socks. =]
I don't know but when man of certain age *try* these pedal pusher/ cut off/cropped whatever you called this pants… sometimes ( almost ALL!) looks to pushy…love his watch!
DSM's remark about "context" is spot on. In Real Life I find this look to be off-putting and here's why. In my experience this sort of a look is worn by someone who delivers long-winded, humorless, self involved monologues. Granted, that's my own prejudice, albeit one carved from experience. But back to context–He's the personification of the male Ralph Lauren look down to the sockless mocs and the rumpled, too short pants. You look at this man and can see him on his sail boat, driving his vintage BMW, cheering on his daughter and her expensive pony at Devon, attending a VIP cocktail party at the US Open. He knows wines. He doesn't work-he manages his portfolio, the seeds of which were planted a hundred years ago by his industrialist great grandfather. He's on several very impressive boards. He's Blue-Blood, Ivy League Lifestyle Man.
We have two short trowser men, first in Atlanta, now in NYC. Is that a trend? If so, THANKS GOD! I'm 6'3", and it's very dificult for me to find "classic long" trowser for me. With this trend I could wear all my old trowser with proud!
The picture is great, as usual. However, in my opinion, that is not the natural style of the guy. I think he is trying to imitate the present trend of short trousers, but he lacks of personality. So, as for the green sweater, is just a trend of recent years. Only my personal opinion :)
Sexy attractive guy!! Love his whole TOP ensemble but honestly, the trousers is wee too short… n his black loafers… oh my… i'm afraid it just doesn't jive. I'm confident he can do better than this… n he is so sexy! Did i mention that already?? :p
Lovely man with a bright snap of color. But my first thought was that his pants shrunk in the dryer (too tight in the groin…don't want to think about "it"). Maybe that was the only pair he had available. Or maybe someone dropped soup in his lap and gave him something temporary to wear home, and he's so cool it doesn't matter. Either way it looks like laundry day…ha-ha. Sorry.
WOW, he's got the WHOLe look down! And love the ankle pants!!!! Not many men would pull it off! Paris Fashion Week has gotten on to a crazy start with Pierre Carden! Go to http://www.imeanwhat.com for some snarky images!
Great sweater, but his attitude is far too "Muffie-fetch-me-a-bloody" — and as 82Brute says, for many of us, that's mighty off-putting. (His hair is far too thin & fine for that cut, too.) The pants & shoes could work on someone who wore them with a sense of humor and irony.
God, I wish more comment strings were like this. The usual comments—"I wish I lived in NY"; "People are so stylish in Milan"—are a pain. THIS comment string was terrific; readers really got a wide variety of possible responses to this guy. The only comment I truly disagree with is the idea that this guy is "boring." Nope. Not boring. Anything but boring…
I've seen this gent before in other post and I think that he works for Polo Ralph Lauren, I love he's style and people need to understand that this is the Polo Look, and the crop pant is not an accident. perhaps this look is made for ( Park Ave & Up ) kind of people & not for the average Joe kind of people you dig!!
First it was the (still) ridiculous pants falling down "look", then it's the (still) ridiculous pants too short "look". The former looking like the wearer raided his fathers closet, the latter looking like the wearer raided his SONS' closet. Both don't work for me, I'm not sorry to say. A grown person should know how to buy clothes that fit.
With that typed…In theory I like the outfit but with the following changes:
1.) Pants that fit (i.e. at LEAST touching the top of the shoe.
2.) Properly fitting shirt (look at the exposed cuff, it could go down a TOUCH further.
3.) Followed by the jacket cuff ever so slightly.
4.) The hair. Length is ok but while a Ferrari should look fast sitting still your hair should not.
5.) The GREEN sweater. Actually, I don't have a problem with it. LOL. Although as an option he could have merely gone with pocket square in the same color.
People are defending this guy's look because he works for Ralph Lauren. All the more reason to tone it down a bit, I think. Even in his over-the-top ads, RL seldom lets it all hang out. And the slim cut of that jacket suggests he'd have a hard time wearing even the thinnest sweater under it.
There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, and this man, judging from the photo, seems to be more on the arrogant "look at me" side. Too studied. Miles away from the attitude that you Americans call (using an 18th century Italian term) "sprezzatura". Or nonchalance if you want.
Wow – what a handsome man. Good thing he's so good-looking, the outfit clashes and the pants are high-waters. Please tell me high waters aren't coming into fashion?
Don't like this look – hair too long, trousers too tight, no socks. Ick. Also he looks self conscious, as if the clothes are wearing him rather than the other way around.
Can you spell AFFECTED!? I would do a complete 180 degree turn and never give this young man a second look. WTF!? This hasnt been done before!? I wore my pants that high in 1970!–its still a poor choice for men. Jack
waaay to predictable. too loud. too clean. and high waters are one thing but their height needs to be in proportion to the width of the pant leg – these would suit finishing just above the ankle as they are they shift the attention to the least tailored knee area. or the moccasins echo the sloppy knees area. the outfit would work better without those pants or with the jacket unbuttoned minus the jumper. the loose/fitted is all mismatching. mediocre
I think this is very nice outfit with some color, like ralph lauren likes alot as I also do. I think the loafers looks better with shorter pants, they get "uplifted" alittle… Another thing to note is why does he have a sweater around him when he doesnt even need it actually..

Sorry.

Or nonchalance if you want.

waaay to predictable. too loud. too clean. and high waters are one thing but their height needs to be in proportion to the width of the pant leg – these would suit finishing just above the ankle as they are they shift the attention to the least tailored knee area. or the moccasins echo the sloppy knees area. the outfit would work better without those pants or with the jacket unbuttoned minus the jumper. the loose/fitted is all mismatching. mediocre

I think this is very nice outfit with some color, like ralph lauren likes alot as I also do. I think the loafers looks better with shorter pants, they get "uplifted" alittle…
Another thing to note is why does he have a sweater around him when he doesnt even need it actually..
