Nice shoes, Michael:-)
March 29, 2009 at 6:14 am
I love everything about this – the layering, the slouchiness of the jeans that still show his body, the color palette, those EYES… Everything is age-appropriate and still hip. The more I look at it, the more I love it!
March 29, 2009 at 6:15 am
He looks pretty much good!
March 29, 2009 at 6:24 am
quite nice, I must Say.
March 29, 2009 at 6:29 am
So simple yet so elegant…so typically Stype!
March 29, 2009 at 6:41 am
He is just fabulous!
March 29, 2009 at 6:56 am
first! Mr. Stipe, long time no see!
March 29, 2009 at 7:05 am
I think Michael Stipe (a personnal god of mine)is incredibly beautiful on the first photograph. You captured his amazing blue gaze… He looks great with a beard. Gives him a bit of austerity which has the greatest effect. (on me at least… and i’m not a man!)Love your work by the way. Endless source of wondering and inspiration.
March 29, 2009 at 7:39 am
He’s elegant and georgeous as usual. Love it. Love the beard too.
March 29, 2009 at 7:41 am
Nice stripes! But he doesn’t look cheerful. at all.
March 29, 2009 at 7:57 am
He always looks sexy!
March 29, 2009 at 8:04 am
he looks like a ballet dancer.
March 29, 2009 at 8:16 am
Sophisticated and dapper. Two thumbs up.
March 29, 2009 at 8:19 am
So comfortable in his skin.
Kudos, Mr Stipe.
March 29, 2009 at 8:26 am
I love his eyes, and THAT beard- he looks very much in the moment, as if he’s thinking “Its ok, just take it, I won’t move”.Very nice!-Cinephile-
March 29, 2009 at 8:30 am
Wow! I like it!
March 29, 2009 at 8:57 am
He strikes me as sort of groomed, modern-day Walt Whitman. a refined animal, to be sure.
The Clever Pup
March 29, 2009 at 8:58 am
I hope he continues to let his hair grow back in
March 29, 2009 at 9:12 am
i love him
March 29, 2009 at 9:31 am
I always knew he was a rock star, and from the looks of his ‘turn out’ in the bottom photo, seems he might have also been a great dancer.
March 29, 2009 at 10:04 am
Le sigh…he and I are from the same town…this gives me hope that I too, a girl from Athens, Georgia, can be worthy of your website.
Great photos. I think the second photo is especially well done, excellent sense of movement.
March 29, 2009 at 10:05 am
It’s like looking at my older brother. These shots capture him perfectly. Good job Sart.
March 29, 2009 at 10:20 am
He looks great! I’m so glad you got these pictures–I remember being so sad when you lost them, last time.
March 29, 2009 at 10:28 am

WOW! good goin. Great portrait!
March 29, 2009 at 10:36 am
THAT Mr. Stipe? OMG!
March 29, 2009 at 11:37 am
are we just interested because he used to be famous or is there a fashion comment being made here. He is dressed like every other shlepper in SoHo.
March 29, 2009 at 11:39 am
He always dresses well.
March 29, 2009 at 11:46 am
I love how the sweater in the first pic truly brings out his eyes. The second picture is just epic. Good job sart.
March 29, 2009 at 11:54 am
As shocking as it is seeing Michael Stipe with such a beard I must say it looks really great on him.
March 29, 2009 at 12:13 pm
amazing lighting in the second photo, and I really like his style. That cardigan is fantastic.
March 29, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Now this man knows his way around clothing.
March 29, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Mr. Stipe……ALWAYS a classic!
March 29, 2009 at 12:55 pm
what nice turn out. O.o
March 29, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Give the fellow an orange beanie hat and he’d be Steve Zissou.
March 29, 2009 at 1:04 pm
one of my favorite people who plays with fashion best!
March 29, 2009 at 1:08 pm
One of your best shots, Sart. Very nice.
March 29, 2009 at 1:34 pm
oh my god!…he is so handsome….
March 29, 2009 at 1:51 pm
He’s always had a great sense of style…there is nothing really special that would hit you over the head, but there is a subtly to it. Maybe it is that he is, well, Michael Stipe…Shiney, Happy…..
March 29, 2009 at 2:00 pm
His look is relaxed, at ease–visually reciprocal to his active and restless mind. His subject is always interesting, as with these photos. Great shots.
March 29, 2009 at 2:15 pm
March 29, 2009 at 2:16 pm
March 29, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Looking like an old man – not a rock star!
March 29, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Clearly Mr Stipe has got better with age. No longer the fuzzy headed waif of the eighties.
March 29, 2009 at 3:18 pm
What a beauty
i has no brains
March 29, 2009 at 3:25 pm
March 29, 2009 at 3:27 pm
r.e.m. style + beard
March 29, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Mr Stipe is just so effortlessly cool. I love the punch of rust against all the black.
March 29, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Oh I just love him!
March 29, 2009 at 4:01 pm
If I did not recognize him with the beard, I would have recognized him from his standing posture. It is absolutely trademark!
March 29, 2009 at 4:09 pm
March 29, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Forget the scarfs or gold bracelets! His beard is his best accessory! OMG, he’s GORGEOUS! :-))
March 29, 2009 at 4:24 pm
nice pics, i just recently lost my religion…
March 29, 2009 at 4:50 pm
His horizontal stripes are also reflected in the stripes in his beard. Conversation with him would be deep.

March 29, 2009 at 5:01 pm
very cool shirthttp://www.moneasywardrobe.com
March 29, 2009 at 5:31 pm
He’s always been nice to look at, including here. Pic’s dark, clothes are dark…judging from what I can see, he looks great. He presents such a well sculpted silhouette..he looks small or narrow, lean, athletic, like a dancer or divers bod. He does casual very well here. The brown scarf with the brown shoes are perfect to keep the all black interesting.
March 29, 2009 at 6:20 pm
March 29, 2009 at 6:31 pm
This look is great. Love the cardigan visible at the cuff and the touches of blue. Complimented nicely by the rich colour of the scarf as well.
The silhouette in the second photo is excellent.
March 29, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Gee, he ages well! Beautiful photos.
March 29, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Oooh, fantastic. Thank you.
March 29, 2009 at 7:37 pm
:wow:He has evolved into a sophisticated version of his younger self.the way the light hits his shoe and the diagonal of the second photo is just great!
March 29, 2009 at 7:42 pm
He’s an original.
March 29, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Stipe has always had style! It’s refreshing to see his mug on here…thanks!
March 29, 2009 at 8:09 pm
March 29, 2009 at 8:16 pm
I love Michael!
March 29, 2009 at 8:32 pm
I felt really sad after seeing these photos. Perhaps it was not the intention, but it made realise how old I was seeing the aging on Michael Stipe’s face. Yet, less negatively, it brought fresh memories, nostalgic ones. Funny, the things photos and faces of them do.
March 29, 2009 at 9:23 pm
He looks good! And has one of the most recognizable voices!
March 29, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Stipe’s sense of style is like his music: timeless and a work of art.
Dig his scarf, shoes and cuffed pants…and his sweater under blazer in top pic.
March 29, 2009 at 10:17 pm
he looks so cool! so comfortable with himself…
March 29, 2009 at 11:14 pm
He’s got the most soulful eyes.
March 30, 2009 at 1:38 am
my dream man.i love anything and everything he chooses to wear. back in the early years REM embodied a collective brash yet sincere ‘effortless’ cool.he sort of resembles a leaned out peter linbergh in the first photo.
March 30, 2009 at 2:27 am
Nice to see a rocker stay classy. And he’s wearing that grey/brown beard quite nicely.
March 30, 2009 at 3:04 am
Great pose. Great style. Great man. (That goes for both of you;-))
My Yaya Wears Prada
March 30, 2009 at 3:44 am
Mr. Stipe has a class of his own. I love it!
March 30, 2009 at 3:58 am
i’ve always liked michael stipe’s style. this just reminds me why i had such a crush on him in the 80s and 90s.
March 30, 2009 at 4:25 am
March 30, 2009 at 4:33 am
love the pose.
March 30, 2009 at 4:38 am
This is a Renaissance portrait and the blue of many restless seas captured in his eyes.
March 30, 2009 at 4:54 am
I love this man.. what a elegance and grace.
March 30, 2009 at 5:47 am
The first picture is amazing… With eyes of any other colour it wouldn’t be so striking and that’s what makes it so beautiful! Nicely shot
March 30, 2009 at 6:01 am
Is he ‘The’ Michael Stipe? The member of R.E.M?
March 30, 2009 at 6:31 am
March 30, 2009 at 6:47 am
Speechless. I simply cannot think of any outfit that could outshine his allure.
March 30, 2009 at 7:15 am
A whole day has passed and no comments on Michael Stipe. C’mon! He looks great!
March 30, 2009 at 7:19 am
Very sexy, very classy!!
March 30, 2009 at 7:42 am
if it isnt REM himself ;)
March 30, 2009 at 7:51 am
i did not know mr. stipe was taking up ballet. so 80s suburban teen. love that rock star move.
March 30, 2009 at 7:58 am
Mr Stipe: my absolute coup de coeur. He is divine, always perfectly composed and with his very own special personal style. I do so love his look.
March 30, 2009 at 8:27 am
I too, am happy you got these shots and posted them…I remember the unfortunate elevator event.
And yes, M. Stipe looks dapper, particularly the blue stripe, blue eye shot. His worry lines between the eyebrows give me some confidence to wear mine proudly as well.
Lastly, he is so smoking hot!
March 30, 2009 at 8:46 am
One of the best dressed men in America? And a very very nice person.Wendy La – if i could age as handsomely and elegantly as Mr Stipe, bring it on!
March 30, 2009 at 9:11 am
He’s become more fashionable and sexy as he’s gotten older. Love the beard!
March 30, 2009 at 10:11 am
very handsome with the beard but I worry that the footwork is a male equivalent of the pigeon toed stance.all the same, very nice to see him.
March 30, 2009 at 11:36 am
“Style is a simple way of saying very complicated things” said J. Cocteau. Mr. stipe is a living myth and an elegant man… One of the best dressed musicians.
March 30, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Aging gracefully never looked better – love the salt & pepper beard!
March 30, 2009 at 1:43 pm
I think the first picture is about grooming. Very nicely designed beard. Who’s to say he doesn’t selectively color it? Only he and his haridresser know for sure!
Of course, Mr. Stipe does his blue eyes proud with the touches of blue in his sweater. Lovely.
I also like the echo of gray in the sweater. I feel having gray hair is a major fashion statement and should be worked into an outfit. This is a good example.
Second pic: one too many cell phone pics for my taste.
March 30, 2009 at 1:49 pm
I would not have recognized him. I quite like the beard.
March 30, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Michael Stipe has done more experimenting with fashion in his 20 years with R.E.M. than 99% of the world’s population. well done sart!
March 30, 2009 at 3:03 pm
OH MY GOD.Michael Stipe is just awesome.
March 30, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Michael Stipe has gotten older. I have gotten older. Michael Stipe is still beautiful. Thank you for bringing him back to mind, Sartorialist.
March 30, 2009 at 4:05 pm
That rocks! Stipe rocks! I met the great Peter Buck a few months ago and I can definately say he also rocks!
March 30, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Nice beard, Michael.
March 30, 2009 at 9:07 pm
This is such a classic look. I think that this is the best casual look for a man. It allows him to individualize his outfit, but still look masculine and completely relaxed.
March 31, 2009 at 1:11 am
March 31, 2009 at 7:19 am
March 31, 2009 at 12:02 pm

April 1, 2009 at 7:04 am
i love this man. always have, always will. he’s inherently good, can boogie up a storm, writes amazing music and dresses well. sigh…
April 1, 2009 at 8:19 am
I want to look like this when I grow up. He’s gorgeous!
April 1, 2009 at 8:32 am
With his charisma, you could basically wear anything and still look good…It’s all about the man, not the outfit (still very important however ;))
April 1, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I love the jolt of color in the second photo from his cinnamon brown scarf. And his stance. And I really do have a thing for turned up jean cuffs.
April 1, 2009 at 2:54 pm
love all of him- clothes, eyes, shyness, his appearance on jimmy fallon… great shots. *a
April 1, 2009 at 3:12 pm
I’m amazed! You took a perfect picture of a man who has been photographed so many times, in so many ways… Beautiful shot of an elegant man!
April 1, 2009 at 11:06 pm
‘Me in Honey’ indeed. LOVE it! Now the real coup, would be to get a shot of M.S’s former crush, Morrissey!
April 2, 2009 at 2:51 am
I love him. He’s divine. Always. Great pics. Great man, so sophisticated. he is tremendously beautiful.Michael would you like to go with me to Ladureé?

Michael would you like to go with me to Ladureè?
April 2, 2009 at 9:56 am
I absolutely looove peolpe watching, observing and try to imagine what kind of person they are and what they do… this guy looks like someone you would like to sit down for a coffea with. Looks like he´s got a good story! If it´s solely the outfit or the whole persona, I don´t know – but it works!
April 2, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Style. Style. Style.
April 2, 2009 at 4:03 pm
So wonderful and effortless. Love Michael.

April 2, 2009 at 9:30 pm
When we were both in our 20′s Michael Stipe and I participated in a gallery talk for a group exhibition we were both in at a museum in S.C. I never saw his face or heard him speak. He was so shy (or bored)that he wore a trenchcoat and hat and stared at the floor the whole time, even when he spoke. Time long past. I think he’s always been interested in his appearance and had great style (however much that style changed over the years). I’ve never seen him on the street. He looks good here. He still has the body to wear clothes well, anything, really. I’m not enamored of the beard. He has wonderful facial features, many of which are either hidden or obscured by the beard. I think that’s a mistake. I like the un-shaven head. Nice to see him here.
April 3, 2009 at 2:03 pm
It almost looks like his feet are in “fifth position.” Stipe is lookin’ GOOD.
April 4, 2009 at 7:23 am
Great pictures. I love him! :)
April 4, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I know we should be talking about clothing, but I am blown away by how well he has aged. Yes, WELL. Especially for a typically anti-aging obsessed celebrity, he is a beautiful and rare example of timeless cool. I can only hope I age as well!
April 5, 2009 at 4:05 am
I wish I knew whether the bottom stance was natural or contrived.
Can’t wait for you to come to Sydney!
April 5, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I just adore him!
April 6, 2009 at 12:41 am
Shtyyyyype! What a wonderful eccentric.
April 11, 2009 at 6:57 pm
I like him with the long facial hair. Everything looked great until I saw his legs.
April 16, 2009 at 9:48 pm
oh, Michael is simply beautiful. wonderful style x
April 19, 2009 at 8:40 am
how did you get this number?
June 12, 2009 at 9:44 pm
I always think Stipe looks amazing. His eyes are beyond words. He has aged extremely well. If he were to go clean shaven, it would be like looking at the Micahel Stipe of 1994. Beautiful man!!
November 6, 2009 at 5:33 am
wow i think i'm in love
April 3, 2013 at 3:47 pm
this man has walked all along my youth by ! an “idol”. Thank you Mr Stipe.
