She is such a massive inspiration to me. I love studying the elements of her outfit; almost all of them are desirable in and of themselves and not just as a part of the whole.
I must say I think she looks the most beautiful with her hair long and down. It really frames her features and makes her look young, feminine, and gorgeous.
i love her fur jacket and the way that although she must know that she is having her picture taken she still doesn’t look at the camera just in case her secrets to effortless style is revealed :D
WOW!! Sartorialist Super-Star… What would we do without Giovanna? These photos are invariably amazing. She has it all: consistency, originality, always tasteful but never boring, sexy sans a hint of trashiness. Really incredible! It’s very rewarding to see these all together. A few thoughts: she looks so different–perhaps younger?–with her hair down. I am not feeling the golden dangly earrings so much, but that’s just being nit-picky. Great work Sart!
giovanna’s style is really great…she has such an eye for colour and texture which i love. Especially texture. I love how she wears somtimes quite prim clothes and is never overtly sexy sexy….she is quite demure and sometimes gives a little nod to androgyny.
i could write an entire thesis raving about her style but i’ll stick to one word (and say it 3x): LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! – that top picture; her bag and shoes – OMG!!
perfect timing. im using one of your pictures to take to the hair dresser this morning. i know that there is the saying, that french women do it better, but then im thinking it’s really about the Italians (monica, sophia, anna, and giovanna!) giovanna really does this excellent mix of classic with trend, but she always looks “in control” of her look.
great look! I would choose a wider belt and try not to let my hair fall on the left side, but maybe these slight flaws are what make her look so casual and effortlessly chic!
I love the fact that she has worn the grey sweater in the top foto about a million times and that she always looks a little cooler than the rest of the FASHION crowd!
Gorgeous photos. Every single look is stunning. Does this woman ever not look good? Second photo down: Did anyone comment on this lovely black coat (wearer on the left)? It’s simple but beautiful. Something about the gold buttons against black is so appealing.
The last picture is the best! The combination of colors between the clothes and the background is brilliant, and she looks much more beautiful than in the previous pics.
She is such a beautiful and chic woman. These pictures prove that you don’t need to plaster your face with makeup or show lots of skin to be sexy and alluring. An inspiration to women of all ages.
the key is that the outfits are well put together … no disharmony at all, and modest. an air of tradition – impeccably tidy and groomed looking. something we need more of.
She is always classy but never boring. She is sexy but never trashy. Look at that bottom shot: the long black fingerless gloves and the tall black boots keep her from looking like a librarian. She always looks comfortable–the skirts aren’t too tight. Her long legs make her look fab in those skinny pants, but you’ve also posted her in wide pants that looked equally great. She seems to be very fond of lightweight turtleneck sweaters–they pop up regularly on her and show off her slenderness while being warm. She does minimal makeup, but then she’s so beautiful she doesn’t need any. An inspiration to us all
Does anyone know the story on the wonderful blue skirt in the hair-down shot??–it’s just great. I like her imperfect hair in the last photo–it makes me like her look even more. Slightly unkempt tresses make an outfit younger and less formal.
So, again, who is she and what does she do and where and how does she find her style? How did she and The Sartorialist find each other? Rhetorial questions really. I’d rather watch and admire and aspire to create something equally as splendid for myself.
Wow. Its great to see how someone dresses differently each day, how they work different aspects of their wordrobe(snake boots)to create different looks. She is such a well dressed person! Sartorialist VIP.
jesus christ this woman is amazing. she has the most amazing hair i’ve ever seen. i love the small forehead (i know quite a strange thing to say) and the drastic center part.
what i love about these photos is that while each one is quite different there is always a common thread or piece that runs throughout each. ultimately, giovanna truly shines through in each and every outfit and image.
I love that my first though was “What a well-dressed woman!” as opposed to “What gorgeous clothing!” She really makes each piece her own. I would wear every single outfit. Those YSL shoes in the first shot are incredible. A great series of photos— the yellow wall in the last one is the perfect backdrop.
Fantastic outfits all. Great sense of style, with great use of length, material and pattern to create something interesting and different in each outfit. What I particularly like is the way she manages to hint at something in herself and her mood with each look, while looking comfortable and utterly herself.
Really great, thanks for putting them all up together. It lets you properly see what she is doing (so well)
Rhetorial – although it’s probably a typo (or you’re just not the spelling bee queen), it is a good word, Princess Glee. It mixes rhetoric with Sartorial!
It inspires a whole lexicon of Sartorial rooted verbiage. Intellorial, humorial, artisorial, activorial…. I could go on and on.
As for Giovanna, I’ve nothing new to say. She’s always chic.
I love how she wears everything and specially that Dolce & Gabbana piyama skirt i mean when i saw it at the runway it was like "whow are those things suposed to be weared" and here's the solution. Great style
i feel abit excluded on this otherwise seemingly known figure. her style is lovely as is her face but without knowing who she is and possibly even if I did, i really liked the variety of faces and types that your images record.
I wish my stepdaughter would read you. I’ve given her your link but she considers anything from Guess to be the ultimate in fashion, and her icons tend toward Britney Spears et al. I think Giovanna is about her age, but looks more mature without looking old. She looks competent. Yet much sexier than the women who expose every big of skin better left to the imagination.
The second last outfit does it for me. That skirt is so cute..
Sometimes I just wonder what it must feel like for people like her, to be herself and be famous and such an inspiration and everything.. must be a cool feeling :)
I love Giovanna! She always looks so fantastic. You should do a special tab, dedicated to Giovanna…it can go under “Bicycles”. Keep up the great work. I love looking at your new posts as I eat my breakfast every morning.
I’ve looked at all the pictures you have of Giovanna on your blog, and I have to say that the thing I love the most about her is how you can see that she reuses every single item of clothing in several outfits. It’s amazing how she can make the same item of clothing look completely different when wearing a different outfit.
Also I love how she is “fashiony” but she doesn’t go over the top – you don’t feel like she is tiptoeing around her outfits. I get inspiration every time I see one of her outfits. Loving it Giovanna!
is it ok to be ever so slightly negative here? i agree with everyone else, she looks incredible, her clothes are beautiful and she wears them so well – always! but… the last dress is too big around the top. Although it does look tight across teh bust, the bulkiness between bust and waist is distracting and looks cheap.
Ok, I had to look up Giovanna, I didn’t know who she was (do I hear screams?) Fashion editor of L’Uomo Vogue, Giovanna Battaglia. Yes, I’m with everyone else, love her style… I feel inspired :) Is the last dress too big on her? Elizabeth.
I wish she would do her hair in a side parting and have it cut in layers and wear it loose .. this look is too severe. Her clothes and especially her boots are fabulous! I don’t think the dangly earrings match with her style though, they’re too gypsy style.
I didn’t know who Giovanna was either..!!?? I thought she was a filmstar, but someone here told she is a fashion editor. She is LOVELY!! Great style, just like that I wld like to look.. She is totally my favourite! And she is smoking too :)
Here is a woman who looks like a woman, not a little girl. It is also nice to see her wear her favourite sweater, or gloves, or jewelry over and over in new combinations. I hate always to see a woman in a completely different outfit each time. It seems so shallow.
so beautiful! She seems so comfortable in whatever she is wearing. Even with her head down descending the stairs there is a silent confidence that sneaks up.
Oh, Giovanna, you’ve done it yet again; I love the second outfit in particular! So effortless and classic, but always with an unexpected element. She is the epitome of fashion. What an inspiration! Everything she wears is just gorgeous.
She understands how to wear serious clothes in a breezy, fashion-y way. She never looks awkward or too trendy, just completely comfortable, ageless and stylish. I love Giovannna. She can wear most of these clothes until she’s 90 and still look wonderful! I could never ever afford her clothing, but I study your pictures of her so I can copy the proportions and color combinations of shoes, dresses, gloves, scarves, hair, etc. Love, love, love huh! Thank you!
I am surprised by how many people criticize Giovanna’s hairstyles. I think that how she wears her hair is often what provides the “edge” to her look. With a more “pretty,” less “severe” hairstyle, she would look more like a well-dressed lady who is “done.”
Her grace and motion are truly a study in style…..she is the epitome of what fashion is all about! Every photo, just brings us to a true appreciation of your work. Thank you..
how unusual, a well-dressed editrix of a European fashion mag
I mean, hello?
I like seeing images of those who don’t have the opportunity to get incredibly expensive and coveted designer items for free – to me, they are much more inspirational.
That said, Giovanna wears everything effortlessly – making clothes that could look overdone on someone with less elan look perfect on her. Personally, I think python boots are a horrorshow, but on her, I see the allure.
I love her style and she looks fabulous and very individual in every one of those outfits. But she must have super-tough feet and ankles. I couldn’t stand more than an hour in any of the footwear she’s got on in the photos, let alone walk in them for any length of time.
How is it possible that one can be so amazingly stylish so often?
What is so wonderful to see is her love of the little details such as the bronze of the belt buckle, the cozy scarves, the fringy bags. She takes pleasure in crafting her look without making seem like she took too much time to put it all together.
She really understands texture. I love that. In fact, I’d say that there is a cooly intellectual aspect to the way she styles herself.
Wooow this girl it’s just amazing!!! what most i admire of her it’s that she has not fear to repeat clothes and always look so chic,so buautiful,so classy,so Giovanna
beautiful… i love the final shot, the wall in the background brightens the photo, and she looks so great… beautiful boots, dress, and i love the way she has the long sleeves!
I am surprised at people’s surprise at Giovanna’s success outfit after outfit. She has particular lines that she sticks to (and Italian women all are boot-crazy in the winter, so the boos are no surprise), and she’s stick-thin and attractive. She also gets lots of gorgeous freebies, as others have noted. Her particular skill seems to be in combining textures in an interesting way. A lovely woman.
I am betting that Giovanna is as lovely a person “inside” as she portrays on the “outside”. Sense of great style, wears items again, and again and with such ease. Simply beautiful and hope to see more of her….
I am loving everything, everything, everything about the first photograph. I especially want her shoes and purse, and I know I couldn’t pull the look off, but those pants are amazing!

Yes, I’m with everyone else, love her style… I feel inspired :) Is the last dress too big on her?

I wish she would do her hair in a side parting and have it cut in layers and wear it loose .. this look is too severe. Her clothes and especially her boots are fabulous! I don’t think the dangly earrings match with her style though, they’re too gypsy style.

Here is a woman who looks like a woman, not a little girl. It is also nice to see her wear her favourite sweater, or gloves, or jewelry over and over in new combinations. I hate always to see a woman in a completely different outfit each time. It seems so shallow.

Brava, Giovanna!

how unusual, a well-dressed editrix of a European fashion mag
I mean, hello?
I like seeing images of those who don’t have the opportunity to get incredibly expensive and coveted designer items for free – to me, they are much more inspirational.
That said, Giovanna wears everything effortlessly – making clothes that could look overdone on someone with less elan look perfect on her. Personally, I think python boots are a horrorshow, but on her, I see the allure.
Always enlightening, Mr. Sartorialist…
