For the sake of her 50 year-old self, I hope it was done with a Sharpie. -JB/SF

May 21, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Interesting avenue you’re taking here…
May 21, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I love this photo and I don’t really know why. It makes me wonder about the story here. Tattoos and tacos? Love it!

Hey..you’re lurking in my workhood! Hope you’re catching some of the great style of the neighbors as they head off to work! I look forward to seeing more of the LES through your lens

Beautiful. Reminiscent of Saul Leiter.
May 21, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Hi!! I´m waiting to see some pictures of Sao Paulo! I really like your work and the ideas you use to give in your blog and I want to see some of my city!
May 21, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Sao Paulo is not without personality!!! Only good photographers like Scott, can capture the real Sao paulo, not people like u!
May 21, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Cheap ATM’s — always in style!
May 21, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Great photograph. I love afternoon sunlight. That pattern is awesome. More building exteriors should have fun patterns and colours, it would really brighten up the world.
May 21, 2009 at 8:22 pm
I seriously love this picture.
May 21, 2009 at 8:30 pm
making my way to NYC soon — hope everything is as interesting there!

May 21, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Wow, I actually walked right by you as you were taking this picture last week.
I saw the girl turn around right after and look as I passed. Very strange knowing it was you taking that picture!
May 21, 2009 at 9:52 pm
i am really enjoying the circles on the side
This photo is so incredible. It’s so mysterious. I absolutely love how awkward the framing is. Between two windows. Not really showing any one thing directly, yet showing a very real four feet of the world. I love love love it. This is the kind of photo that inspires a short story. xo!D
May 21, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Don’t know which one is more awesome.. the painted board or the tattoo writing on her back!
May 21, 2009 at 10:52 pm
As Leonard Cohen, Canadian poet-singer-songwriter extraordinaire, sang: “there’s music on clinton street all through the evening….” Thank you for capturing some of this mythic street’s magic with your lens.
May 21, 2009 at 11:06 pm
I’m almost as fascinated by the response to the photo as the photo itself. It’s interesting to me that the woman in the photo is so judged by what she ornaments her body with in such a harsh way. I think your readership thinks a bit much of itself. You know, in the end we are all pavement my friends. Pavement. Those names might mean more to her than your designer duds will ever mean to you or anyone else.
Thanx for showing us the rest of the world you see. An appropriate response to those who say you stage everything with fashion shoot leftovers.
May 21, 2009 at 11:35 pm
LOL! HER TATOO IS SO COOL, THE MOST ORIGINAL ONE ! AND THE ANGLE OF THE PHOTO IS GREAT !
May 22, 2009 at 12:34 am
Jeez Scott, It was just as much fun reading everybody’s reactions to your photo, as it was to look at it. I love you all over again (in a non-stalker, non-weird kind of way). xo
makes coffee nervous
May 22, 2009 at 12:38 am
so beautiful, sart! thank you! you made my friday!
May 22, 2009 at 12:57 am
You should make more pics like these!
May 22, 2009 at 2:08 am
Ditto what Daphne said. I like the juxtaposition between the circles and square shapes, and the depth. Also, I keep looking at the person inside but I’m not sure what I’m seeing.
May 22, 2009 at 2:33 am
this is why i always return to and stay in the lower east side/east village every year…real life.
May 22, 2009 at 2:45 am
Vintage Pucci print.
May 22, 2009 at 3:17 am
Who’s that girl?
May 22, 2009 at 3:19 am
I think one of the best things you captured in this pic Sart, is the dimly lit "I <3 NY" bags on the right side. I also like that the composition is different than most of your photos (and it's unique in and of itself), prob because your not trying to show an outfit – but the change is nice.
May 22, 2009 at 3:37 am
This is NYC for me.It’s got grit(s).
May 22, 2009 at 3:44 am
May 22, 2009 at 4:21 am
Fantastic picture – one of the best I’ve seen in a while. Everything works so perfectly; the colours, the tattoo…
May 22, 2009 at 4:25 am
you always impress me!
May 22, 2009 at 4:36 am
Dear and kind people, please tell an ignorant old-worlder what is ATM? Thank you! I love the colors and am sure the names are her children.
May 22, 2009 at 4:45 am
This is so real, so tangible. I love the candid, street shot you get – thanks.
May 22, 2009 at 5:27 am
I love this photo..you’ve captured a very different scene!
May 22, 2009 at 5:43 am
May 22, 2009 at 6:02 am
East Village( far east, Ave. C) and L.E.S. still has some of that raw NYC flavor. You captured it well in this photo! And from reading the comments so far, it seems like people are responding well to this different type of imagery. Great photograph!
May 22, 2009 at 6:22 am
May 22, 2009 at 6:38 am
woooow – i think this is the best photo you’ve ever posted. not that it’s much about fashion but the storytelling and the room it creates for imagination is enormous.

I love that you’re starting to pair your photos with more of your thoughts. You used to do this a lot and then went to photos only. I like knowing what the photographer was thinking.
May 22, 2009 at 8:05 am
big apple… love it!
May 22, 2009 at 8:11 am
excellent pic. very Saul Leiter.
May 22, 2009 at 8:12 am
Never boring. You make my morning.
May 22, 2009 at 8:51 am
Great photo! Love it!
And about Sao Paulo… it really depends on where Scott goes, because in some places the people dress all like each other. So Scott, if you want to capture stylish men and women do not stay in the mall!

May 22, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Absolutely fantastic. thank you for sharing this picture with us
May 22, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Very cool…look closely at her back and you can see these weird tan lines amid the tattoos…she rocks…subliminal messages here rival Sgt. Pepper.
Genious is frequently accidental.
May 22, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Kind of a gritty, never washed, chewing-gum-stuck-under-the-table look that always says NYC to me.$1 for ATM would really piss me off.
May 22, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I want this design on a wall(s) in my house…love it…the circles, not the body art. :)
May 22, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Quintessential NYC !
May 23, 2009 at 6:40 am
Very Saul Leiter. I like it.
May 23, 2009 at 11:34 am
I really like that!
May 23, 2009 at 12:20 pm
That is one large gesture of love!
Gah! I love the LES!
May 23, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Awesome shot of some non-clothing style.
I think the tattoo is cool.
May 23, 2009 at 2:51 pm
hard core conviction and no one can tell me different on that. the LES in all of its grit is NYC of my heart.
May 23, 2009 at 8:51 pm
reminds me of the photos of famous indian street photographer: raghubir singh.
May 24, 2009 at 1:36 pm
The restaurant facade in this photo was painted for the Julie Taymor movie, “Across the Universe.” The film used Clinton and Rivington Street for a set. They painted facades and doors up and down the two streets. It’s a great movie.
May 25, 2009 at 1:37 am
Aahh I work on clinton.
Go to 21 Clinton st. on Saturday or Sunday, ask for Zach, tell me who you are, and you get free coffee.
May 25, 2009 at 11:50 am
That cheezy I (heart) NY graphic always makes me sad. So much has been lost. But hey, we got tattoos!
May 25, 2009 at 12:03 pm
May 25, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Love the colors . . .
May 26, 2009 at 6:52 am
I’m in love with tattoos
May 26, 2009 at 10:47 am
I’m glad you left midtown. The LES is like a refined Brooklyn. I want to see some shots from Williamsburg.
May 26, 2009 at 1:36 pm
There’s a women similar to her around here in Pennsylvania. Only instead of I assume her children’s names on her back, she had tats of her children’s faces…
Um, yeah. To each their own. Anyway, thanks for sharing this side of New York. It almost pays a nostalgic glance of the LES used to be like.
May 26, 2009 at 10:36 pm
beautiful photo. I love when you include your less fashion-y photos, as well. You have a unique eye for photography
May 27, 2009 at 7:34 am
I love it.My new pattern will be inspired in this amazing picture.

June 15, 2009 at 9:50 am
Wow. Friedlander in colour … with attitude!! I LOVE this shot. The fonts, the signage, the light … seriously one of my favorite photos in so long. (Not just yours .. I'm talking the photography world in general.) I want to hear Danzinger's take on it …Did I mention Wow?
June 15, 2009 at 7:20 pm
I saw this woman today and almost took a photo as well. A lovely pairing, as she was with her children.
