I love these two shots of the girls and guys dancing, particularly the girls. You caught the rotation of the bodies with the skirts twirling, the dancing feet, and best of all that happy smile.

June 10, 2009 at 11:13 am

June 10, 2009 at 11:22 am
To answer that last question, 1920s bandleader Michael Arenella (info at dreamlandorchestra.com) hosts and organizes this event on Governors Island (just off the tip of NYC in NY Harbor)…in June and again September…each time, its 2 days of picnicking to live music, dancing, vintage cars, period games like tug o war, pie recipe contest, parade of hats, etc etc. Next one is probably the weekend Sept 12/13…come back in time with us!
June 10, 2009 at 11:23 am

The events take place on the weekend on Governor's Island off of the Manhatthan coast. You can take the ferry for free and the admission is free to (i believe) all the shows/events. Here is the website for pix and events… I'm gonna try to be there this weekend…http://www.govisland.com/

June 10, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Perhaps try Aris Allen Swing shoes. At least, that's what's popular here in LA.
June 10, 2009 at 7:28 pm

I really want to go to this party!
June 10, 2009 at 11:44 pm
I love the happiness in these two images !! So real, so infectious – as they smile, I smile as well.
I am sending the link to a friend who is visiting NY in September. Thank you Joelle and Heidi for the information about the event.
June 11, 2009 at 12:23 am
These pictures really captured the joyful essence of dance regardless of who you're partnered with.
Thanks for showcasing that a guy doesn't always have to lead while a woman doesn't always have to follow either.
I really like the floral print linen shirt too. It was created by Indian designer Sandy Dalal dare I say almost 10 years ago?
Dalal, at age 22 snagged the CFDA's 1997 Perry Ellis Award for Menswear but later went under the radar for quite a few years.
Apparently according to Daily News Record reporter Jean Scheidnes:
"Dalal and Clifford Fong have been quietly designing a unisex apparel collection called Chatav Ectabit. (The tricky name is a concoction of secret origin.) with Ellen DeGeneres and Tom Cruise among its fans."
Check out – http://www.chatavectabit.com
Purely coincidental, their Spring/Summer 2009 Collection possess a 1920s-inspired vibe in the usage of pinstriped and distressed/crinkled fabrics and steampunk influences as well.
If I may add, Joe McGlynn, the fabulous dancer leading Charlestons behind me is wearing authentic 1920s clothing from tip to toe – from his boater hat, white linen suit, necktie, and hanky down to his socks and shoes.
The only 1920s item I was wearing was the skinny leather belt (not shown in pic) which I still had the packaging for; it is labeled BroncoJim Belts by DonJuan!
While the pinstriped linen pants was from Prada S/S 2005.

In answer to the question about the women's dance shoes worn by the lovely ladies in white dresses, you might want to check out http://www.dancestore.com which offers something comparable though not vintage or exact in style – Aris Allen wingtip/spectator/oxford shoes which are designed for dancing.
Bleyers from UK is also a reputable brand for saddle type shoes.
You might have to scour vintage stores or eBay to try to find truly authentic vintage shoes of that era.
At any rate, make sure to avoid the ones with tracking/rubber soles which will not translate/spin well on the floor.

This is very good dancing pair and looks trendy.
June 11, 2009 at 5:14 am

June 11, 2009 at 7:44 am

June 11, 2009 at 12:27 pm
those women dancing in those white dresses is soooo cinematic. You're also fabulous with light–look at the light falling on that man's shirt!
June 11, 2009 at 10:19 pm
What a beautiful picture of the dancing girls!
June 11, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Those guys are adorable. Love the hats!
June 12, 2009 at 5:51 am
Anonymous 7.44am – i have two pairs of Church'e co-respondent brogues that are about 20 years old now and still going very strong. Price per wear they're excellent value, believe me! Treat yourself – you won't regret it…
June 12, 2009 at 11:04 am
Aris Allen's come in womens sizes too- you'll have to buy them from dancestore.com or a local dance shop, however- you can't order from their website. These pictures are lovely! Ever since I started lindy hopping I have been inspired by the vintage look. These pictures made me smile!
June 12, 2009 at 5:30 pm
