June 10, 2009 at 7:44 am
Did you go back in time?
June 10, 2009 at 7:49 am
Was there a Great Gatsby fan club meeting this weekend? Nice clothes, but they really do fall into the realm of movie costumes.
..love the 3rd background figure.she and the woman to the right definitely foil the gentleman..Perfect images and outfits for the summer
June 10, 2009 at 7:52 am
What a wonderful event this is! Would be so much fun to go along; love this era. Great pics.
June 10, 2009 at 7:55 am
Woah, is that an orange flower in his lapel? If so, it even matches the lady's necklace perfectly.
I love his glasses.
June 10, 2009 at 8:08 am
Beautiful picture! I love it! That dress is beautiful and it fits her perfectly.
June 10, 2009 at 8:13 am
Any idea on the watch? Looks like the Patek I've been eyeing for a while now, but the photo doesn't enlarge enough to tell for sure.

Love this roaring 20's inspired look. Flappers, straw hats and flowers headbands …you don't see them much these days.Leslie
…they seem from another time…brilliant!!!
June 10, 2009 at 8:24 am
Absolutely beautiful makes me wish I could be magically transported there.
June 10, 2009 at 8:51 am
And she's wearing a hat!
June 10, 2009 at 9:07 am
they are gorgeous!
Absolute perfection, with perhaps the one exception of the buttons on his sleeves.
June 10, 2009 at 9:13 am
Wow im speechless what a great photo…its probably in the works already but you need to have a published book of your work you are amazing!
June 10, 2009 at 9:15 am
That is an awesome jacket he's wearing; I've got to find one.
June 10, 2009 at 9:18 am
finally, a bowles fan.
June 10, 2009 at 9:21 am
great photo, it's nice to see loose- cut clothing on men
June 10, 2009 at 9:25 am
love the "sheltering sky" reference, the gentleman and the lady really look like they have stepped out of the movie…his outfit is very john malkovich!
June 10, 2009 at 9:42 am
I forget the name of this event, but the theme is pre 50's. I've finally put the pieces of the puzzle together hehe
June 10, 2009 at 9:53 am
The only thing I would change is that I would have been there (being a swing dancer at one point in my life).
Thank heaven for summer's day without men in ribbon belts and pants with whales embroidered on them.
June 10, 2009 at 10:34 am
It looks like everybody dresses awesomely in the Governor's island
June 10, 2009 at 10:45 am
Lovely, I wish everyone dressed like this everyday!!
wonderful vintage art deco stylings.. the best most fashionable era before garish colours were invented *ahem*
June 10, 2009 at 11:08 am
I'm in love with the crease in his trousers and with the pin (type thing) in his tie.
I'd love to see what socks he was wearing.
June 10, 2009 at 11:10 am
This is very beautiful!
June 10, 2009 at 11:28 am
Love this look, fantastic jacket!
June 10, 2009 at 11:35 am
So beautiful, since last year I have been waiting for the governor's island pictures. They are so wonderful!
June 10, 2009 at 11:47 am
It's really the proportions of his ensemble that make this photo stunning. Not everyone knows how to wear an elegant high waist.
June 10, 2009 at 12:13 pm
That woman is just not from this age..
June 10, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Easily one of the best pictures I've ever seen on Sartorialist!
June 10, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Brilliant photo and what an amazing couple. I love vintage looks.
June 10, 2009 at 12:44 pm
i absolutely love this latest series of pictures. im sure im not the only one who wishes he was born about 75 years earlier after seeing these.
June 10, 2009 at 12:49 pm
the governor's island shots are amazing.
June 10, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Well, it is a far cry from Morocco but the outfits sure ring true. Linen, yikes, I normally dislike it but under The Sheltering Sky it's a must.
I like that they left no detail untouched. The vintage shades are super.
June 10, 2009 at 1:22 pm
ah this gives me cosy summer feeling!
June 10, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I Love this picture. Very elegant and summery. Very inspiring.
June 10, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Is the title of this post a reference to the "Gilgamesh" anime? I somehow doubt it, but if it is I give you geek-cred.
June 10, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Whatever event that was looks very cool and fun!
June 10, 2009 at 2:05 pm
What struck me was actually their postures. They're very "in character". :p
The couple just… match!
June 10, 2009 at 2:13 pm
This event always looks like so much fun! I wish I could be there!
June 10, 2009 at 2:24 pm
this is so elegant!
June 10, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Nothing quite exceeds the charm of soft rumpled linen on a warm afternoon. This man's is perfection. I have never understood why people insist on ironing this lovely fabric into a small-minded conformity.
June 10, 2009 at 3:33 pm
A photo full os light!

I can barely see the gentlemans sunglasses, but I know that I want them. Badly!
Ga Ga for Gretchen!
June 10, 2009 at 3:58 pm
GratefulOne, you are wrong. Yes, for some people it's costume. But many dedicated, elegant people dress like this everyday. It is part of their lifestyle and shouldn't be dismissed as costume. Gorgeous, Sart!
June 10, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Dear Sartorialist, I am new to your blog, so forgive me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but have you ever attended Goodwood Revival in England? It's held in Sept – you'd love it!
June 10, 2009 at 4:25 pm
I'm so tired of seeing the comments in the vein of "Looks like a costume/Nobody dresses like this/This isn't street style." This event may be an event, but I know dozens and dozens of people who dress like this almost every single day. It's a costume if you have to specifically go out and find pieces to make a costume, and you LOOK like you're wearing a costume. If people LOOK organic and right in these outfits, then it's no longer a costume but a straight up fashion statement.
June 10, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Char-ming. *love it*

Oh Wow! for me this great shot is all about the accessories. as a photo, i love the way it's tightly cropped.
June 11, 2009 at 5:50 am
Lovely photos from this event but I would hardly call them "On the street"!
Some Like it Vintage

The Governor Island pics really tip over to the "costumey" side. Granted, I love a Great Gatsby look every once in awhile, but I think this is more of a 20's club meeting or something. Thanks!
June 12, 2009 at 12:43 am
polo indeed… wooster strikes
A Super Dilettante
June 12, 2009 at 7:29 am
Loving his green tie!!
June 12, 2009 at 9:40 am
They look like they just have arrived there from a timetravel machine. How they don't belong there.. I am loving the colors. Even her lipstick does not look like a recent one! Loving the couple..
June 12, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Every detail of the gentleman is perfection. Finding it hard to believe that he dressed himself. This couple is also a testament to "clothes making the person".
June 13, 2009 at 4:18 pm
sean and his lady lookin fab! i love it :)
June 13, 2009 at 11:29 pm
fabulous, fabulous picture. captures such a moment. wonderful work.
June 14, 2009 at 12:47 pm
my apologies for being so fashionably naive – but, all of these pictures from governor's island have *blown* my midwestern mind… is this just how people live/dress on the island? is it a movie set? it's completely gorgeous but it's almost odd how everyone looks the same… just wondering if there was a reason for it.
June 16, 2009 at 6:35 pm
They are perfect, down to their shaded spectacles!
June 17, 2009 at 12:16 pm
This is a beautiful photo. You have captured many things. It is really very interesting how at this moment in time, we collectively seem to be hankering for a gentler past.
June 17, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Oh he realy looks like Oscar Wilde. Pure dandysme!
June 18, 2009 at 3:13 am
Nice Paul Bowles reference…
June 18, 2009 at 4:07 pm
i love that little peep of light on the woman's chin.
June 19, 2009 at 2:45 am
Kool dude ;)

There's no vintage here, this is contemporary! Everything on the gent is very inspiring; the hair, the glasses, the fabrics, the watch, the high pants, the dashes of leather/tortoise/orange, even how the pocket hangs down a bit. Very inspiring and very today.
