This Weekend…. Pop Up Flea
Hey guys, this weekend I’m stopping by the Pop Up Flea.
I did a fast run through this morning and was able to check out a few brands like Private White, LL Bean Signature, and Tanner Goods. Â I really love the beanies in the last picture, and especially the vegetable tanned leather accessories in the second shot. Â It’s always more fun to age the leather yourself.
It’s going to kick off today at 3pm but lasts until Sunday Dec 2. Â You can find it at the Drive In Studios at 443 W 18th Street.

Let’s Address…. Sockless
So let’s talk about this sockless issue. I’m going to tell you my big secret. The summer time is the only time that I don’t wear shoes sockless. Maybe tennis shoes but not leather shoes.
There’s one very simple reason.
In the summer your feet sweat then they stick to the leather, then blister.
Actually the ideal time to go sockless is between 45 degrees and 66 degrees. At that point your feet are cool enough to keep from blistering but not too cold, and not too warm.
I know there’s always the option of that little footie thing but that never seems to work for me at any time of year.
A few of you made an interesting point that if it’s cold enough for gloves it’s cold enough for socks. Personally I don’t dress by those kind of mathematical equations. But what I will say is that you wear gloves to keep your fingers warm and you wear shoes to keep your toes warm. The only part that’s exposed is your ankles. Maybe I have insensitive ankles, but my ankles never seem to get cold, just like my wrists never seem to get cold. I can honestly say when that photograph was taken, my extremities were temperature comfortable.

On the Street…….15th St., New York
This is one of those images that I shot last year but keep coming back to, trying to figure out how this kind of look relates to me and my personal style. I love this mix of fashion and sport. I can only assume that these are Nike running tights mixed with what could be an Aspesi jacket and a knit. It’s one of those looks that’s just different enough and directional enough, that it makes you keep coming back to it to figure out How can I do that? But my style’s not really like his.
I’ll keep you updated. By the end of this winter, I’m going to try and figure out (against Garance’s wishes) my version of this look.

Cyber Monday…. Does it Affect You?
So, considering it’s Cyber Monday, I wonder if there’s anything on sale today that you’ve been eyeing, and really can’t live without. Are there any underground sites doing something special for Cyber Monday that I need to know about? I’d love to hear from both the guys and the gals.

This is one of those images that doesn’t really tell a story but it can certainly start one. Â It’s like you can tell everything about their relationship from just the way they stand next to each other and the shoes they wear.

From the Archive……Puffer Vests
As winter approaches there are a few photos from last year that I keep going back to for inspiration.
This image of a puffer vest layered under a coat was one of the first images I pulled. I have several puffer vests from Aspesi that work perfectly in this way. They are a thinner puff(?) and in great, rich colors that will work well with other monochromatic outerwear or even (more perfectly) with colorful tweeds or graphic patterned outerwear.

Marathon Training, New York
Alexandra was in town recently for the NYC Marathon :(
Seeing her here in all of her sporty greatness reminded me of how of how fun and beautiful running can actually be. A lot of you might not know but back in ’95 and ’96 I ran the New York City Marathon. It was one of the achievements of my life (I grew up with asthma so I could hardly run a block when I was eight years old). Running is about the only sport that I still enjoy doing. Actually, I don’t know how if I enjoy the sport of running (who could really enjoy that,) but I do enjoy shopping for all the great gear, staying in shape (able to fit in my clothes,) and having a chance to think about the day’s challenges during a 30-minute run.
Actually, one thing I’ve been trying to do is continue to run when I travel. It’s such a great way to become familiar with a city, even if it’s only parts of the city that are within a 20-minute run in any one direction. I’m going to try and challenge myself in the new year (early New Year’s resolution) take Instagram photographs during my morning runs all over the world. I’ll be carrying my phone anyway, because who wants to run in a new city with GPS to find your way back to the hotel?
Knox is the gentleman in the background, and he is part of the NYC Bridge Runners group, a really cool sounding group of people that literally run the bridges in New York City. Here’s a link for more information about their organization.

Vintage Photographs at Dunderdon Workshop
You know I love vintage photographs.
While I was at Dunderdon Workshop, I found several boxes of well-edited vintage photographs done by a company called Ampersand. If you’re like me, and you don’t have the patience to go through piles and boxes at flea markets, this store is great.

On the Street….The Smarties, Soweto, SA
About a year ago I was talking about my travel wishlist  with my good friend Sam Lambert. I had mentioned visiting Africa and immediately Sam told me I had to meet this group of young men in Soweto that called themselves The Smarties.
Sam was right; these young men love fashion, design their own looks, and even sew the clothes themselves. Their look is a mix of their personal experiences and their dreams.
Kabelo, the young man pictured above, found this suit at a second-hand shop and and had it altered to his exact desires. He is very soft-spoken and sincere, it was quite touching when he told me that Lino is his hero and that he wore his “Italian flag” hat on that specific  day to honor Luca Rubinacci’s birthday.
We’ll see more of The Smarties this week.

On the Scene….The Neighbourgoods Market, Downtown Johannesburg, SA
The good thing about having a small artistic community is that everyone can hang out together. That’s what it felt like at The Neighbourgoods Market, a Saturday-only pop-up market/clubhouse in the center of downtown Johannesburg. Sam and I were very impressed by how natural, cool and laid back the vibe was at the market. The food booths were incredible and the little clothing shops were perfect for local artists and designers to showcase their goods to the right crowd. We would’ve been happy to hang out there all day. Â ![]()

New York Right Now
People have been asking (or disappointed) that I haven’t covered the Hurricane Sandy situation on the blog. Well, there is a good reason. None of this is fun, no one really feels like smiling for a camera. Garance, my little girls and I have been very lucky that we were able to get a small midtown hotel room since Tuesday. However our hearts go out to all our friends staying in their apartments with no power and often now, no running water. I have been trying to keep the blog as normal as possible since it’s a nice escape from reality.
Hang in there, New York, and all our East Coast fans and friends.
