On the Street…..My Fashion School, New York

I saw this young lady the other day at Casa Magazines on Eighth Avenue.  It reminded me of how many times I’ve done the exact same thing, buying an armful of magazines for a long weekend.  Actually I think Casa Magazines was my most important fashion and photography schooling.  School trained my brain but the magazines I bought at Casa trained my eye.

Contest: Join the Party!

As you know, next week we kick off the book signing tour for The Sartorialist: Closer, and we’re starting off the festivities with a little private party at Danziger Gallery in New York, generously underwritten by Coach. But it wouldn’t be a party without having one of you there. (Stay tuned for information on the public signing on September 7!)

So, today we’re starting a little contest. We’re posting three photographs that could make a great story. In 200 words or less, write a story in the comments inspired by the photograph. We’ll pick one winning story from among the three photographs and invite that person to the opening party.

The party will be the evening of September 5. Coach will provide a hotel room for the winner and a guest at the Hotel Americano, and a bag of their choosing from the Legacy collection.

We’ll announce the winner on Tuesday morning, and look forward to seeing you Wednesday night!

Introducing the “Backless” Tag

Today’s post reminded me of all of the photos I’ve taken of women wearing backless dresses. Looking at the photos you can really feel the heat of summer!

We’ve added a “backless” tag, so you’ll now be able to search specifically for these images.

Another Shameless Plug for Garance’s New Column in Vogue Paris!!!

Finally, I get to announce Garance’s new column in Paris Vogue! It premieres in the new, redesigned September issue.

Some of you may remember that Garance had a chance to work with Paris Vogue a few years ago, and she struggled with whether or not to accept the position at that point. She was still creating the voice of her blog and we were both afraid that stepping away from it in any capacity would have hurt that development in the long run.

However, good things come to those who wait, and Garance now will have her own column, and is allowed the freedom to write, shoot, illustrate, really use all of her creative forces, to share her very honest point of view on fashion and life as she lives it.

It’s been so rewarding to see Garance struggle and achieve over the last three years to grow at the rate that was right for her and fine tune her artistic voice to become the most unique and precise on the internet, and now in print!

Click here to see Garance’s post about it.

WINNER: You’re Coming to the Party!

I know this man.

He’s older now, but I’d recognize his proud walk anywhere; his old-fashioned cap, his slightly short pants. I bet that when you look at him, you cannot guess he is an artist. Yes, an artist. Not the kind you’d think, but nonetheless.

Every summer, while a child, my mom would get a knock at the door.

“Mornin’, ma’am! Any jobs for me this year?”

And like that, he’d become part of my family for a month or so. Every day, he’d varnish the mahogany beams of our ceiling with the same care you’d caress a baby.

I’d observe him from behind a door, wondering what hidden pleasure he derived from his steady, repetitive work. Sometimes I’d catch him singing softly, almost as if cooing the beams with every brushstroke.

Swish, swish.

Back and forth.

Soothing and hypnotizing.

One day, I gathered the courage to ask him, “Why do you do this? Don’t you want to do something else?”

He looked down, eyes twinkling.

“No, Susie, I don’t. I’m an artist. These walls and ceilings talk to me. They have a story to tell and need me to help them tell it.”

I never doubted him, but it was much later that I came to understand him: It was passion that made his work a work of art.

P.S. The first time I saw this picture on the blog, I immediately thought of the painter on which this little vignette of a story is inspired. He really would show up every summer to paint our ceiling, and was a lovely man who looked very much like this one in the photograph…

On the Street….West Side Meatpacking District Then and Now, New York

Yesterday I bought the great book West Side Rendezvous by Katsu Naito at the Book Marc store here in L.A.

The book documents New York’s Meatpacking District in the early 90′s when it was still an outlaw area.  Actually the shot above (on Washington Street) would be just to the right of the photo below.  The change in just 15 to 20 years is so dramatic.

This “young lady(?)” is standing right about where I was standing when I took the photo of the young lady above while she works at The Standard.   Yes, there was a time when transgender prostitutes walked the streets in New York in broad daylight.

If you love New York you have to get this book.  Not only is the sub-culture covered fascinating but the actual real drama  of the images are heartbreaking.

I love the idea of a super lightweight terrycloth sport coat in the summer.  I don’t know if I would wear it in the city, but throwing it on after getting out of the pool instead or drying off with a towel seems so cool.

LAST DAY – The “What Was I Thinking??” Contest For A Copy of My New Book!

My new book The Sartorialist: Closer is almost ready to ship, so I wanted to give a few of my readers a chance to get it first!

So….contest!

What is the item of clothing that you dreamed about the most but never actually ended up wearing??

For me it was this made-to-measure Ralph Lauren wool/cashmere, light grey, very stylized sportscoat.  I really dreamed of wearing it with grey flannels or dark denim and brown suede shoes;)) I must have been having a very Fred Astaire moment when I ordered it because I don’t know where I thought I would wear it.  I would feel too self conscious wearing this jacket, it would look great on others but not me.  This jacket has been sitting in my closet for about 4 years and every August I start thinking about the fall and say, “This is the year I make it work!”

Well, this August I say “This is the year I finally throw this jacket out.”

So… share with us!

In the comments section of this post leave your story of the item you dreamed of the most but never actually ended up wearing. The contest will run from now until 12 p.m. Eastern time (in New York) next Wednesday, August 8. We will pick one winner (or maybe three) and send you a signed copy of my next book.

Make sure the email address you leave when signing in is the address thats easiest to reach you.

I love bike shots when shot from behind.  The sense of sailing through the city is easier to relate to when it’s not personalized with someone’s face.

If I shot this from the front I would feel like “Wow, that guy’s having fun.” When shot from the back I can more easily imagine myself in that position.

On the Street…..Wall Street Sartorial Mesh, New York

This, to me, looks like what would happen if Dior outfitted Wall Street traders.  I’d love to see practical, sportswear materials continue to work their way into classic sartorial suiting.  It could really shake up a very staid, boring segment of menswear.

I wonder what the Wall Street trading pit would look like if dressed by Nike.  Sounds like a great editorial for Fantastic Man.

I think this also proves the idea that men will wear anything as long as other men are wearing it too.

I had almost forgotten how much fun it is to shoot kids at play. Kids playing with their parents is even more fun to shoot.

It’s so emotionally rewarding, to capture that level of love and caring is one of the great gifts of photography.

My dad’s family had a large auto-repair firm in Stockholm, Sweden, and he frequently travelled down to Germany in order to attend different auto-shows and to purchase new equipment. As far as I know, this photo was taken on a train during one of these business trips somewhere in Germany.

My dad was a true sartorialist and often effortlessly elegant. In some way, this photo encompasses all the things he represents to me.
