Patrick Demarchelier

Today Garance is being shot by Patrick Demarchelier for an upcoming project. I’m so jealous because I’ve never been shot by Mr. Demarchelier, although I have shot him.

I forgot I had this photograph, but I’ve always liked it because I think it really shows where the elegance in his images comes from.

Hey guys,

So I updated my Instagram name to TheSartorialist. It’s not a new account, so no need to re-follow me if you already were. But if you’re new to Instagram (and you’re on your phone) here’s where to click to follow: @TheSartorialist¬†or see my profile here

The Sartorialist on Instagram

I’m really honored tonight to present the Webby Breakout of the Year award to¬†Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger¬†of Instagram.

Instagram has become a great tool for people to feel more confident in sharing their images, which is something that I think can only be good.

You’ve seen filtered images on my Twitter account, so you may already know I’ve been using Instagram consistently over the last six months. What you may not know is that recently I made my Instagram account public. You can follow me at @TheSartorialist

Vintage Photo

This is my grandmother Sabina Yanes. The photo was taken in La Palma, Canary Islands in 1928. She was 13 years old.

This is, by far, one of my favorite photos of “Mimina” (as her grandkids used to caller her). I love her shoes, the way she gently crosses her feet, the bit of hair curled in her forehead, her elegant pose and, perhaps the most striking feature, her gaze into the camera. Mimina rarely smiled in photos, she would just look directly into the camera while appearing to be keeping the world’s greatest secret.

Vintage Photo

My cousins and I decided, (ironically) that this must be where our fashion sense came from since I still can’t get over my uncle wearing a fur collar coat. Their daily uniform consists of flannels, Woolrich trousers and a pint of Guinness.

Vintage Photo

This is a photo of my grandmother Irene and my grandfather Dmytro. It was taken in Kalush, Ukraine sometime in the late 1930′s or early 1940′s. My grandmother cared a lot about fashion and bragged more than once that she was the first woman in her village to wear pants.

Summer Inspiration

Summer’s just around the corner. I was going through last summer’s posts to try to find looks that still resonated, and I love the idea of this all white with these Adidas tennis shoes. I’ve always been a Converse guy, but I might be making a switch this summer.

Be on Stage with Us at the CFDA Awards

We are so honored to be receiving the CFDA Eugenia Sheppard Media Award and couldn’t have done it without you, our readers.

As a part of the ceremony, Garance and I are working on a video presentation and we would really love for you to be a part of it. We are asking our readers and fans to submit a short video where you tell us what our work means to you. Maybe you have a favorite photograph from my site or a post that meant a lot to you from Garance–whatever it is, we want to hear about it.

These don’t have to be Hollywood productions, they can be anything from a video recorded using a webcam to something you shoot with your cell phone.¬†We would love to hear from all four corners of the globe. We are proud of our international following and want to hear not only from the fashion capitals but also from Australia, Africa, China and Canada. Feel free to record your video in English or your native language.

Here are a few guidelines and tips for recording the videos:

In Photo Booth on Mac

Open the Photo Booth application on your mac and select the film strip icon on the right. Click on the red camera to begin your recording. When finished, select the video and you will be able to send it via email.

On a digital camera

Switch your camera to the movie record function and film your video. Upload the file to your computer and attach it to an email.

On a cell phone

In your camera app, select record video/video camera and film your video. You can email the file directly from your phone.

The video should be:

  • In a QuickTime format (.mov, .mp4, .m4v, 3GPP, 3GPP2, AVI, DV)
  • No larger than 800×600 resolution.
  • We encourage you to use We Transfer or other file sharing services for sending the video files.
  • VIDEO MUST BE BETWEEN 30 SECONDS AND 1 MINUTE. We will not be able to use any footage that is over 1 minute.

Please send all video submissions to cfdavideo@gmail.com by May 18, 2012. Please include contact information for follow up.

Please leave any questions in the comments of this post.

Thank you so much for all the support!

Evelyn Hofer at James Danziger Gallery

My gallerist James Danziger has another great show opening this week celebrating the work of Evelyn Hofer.

I wasn’t familiar with her work, but as soon as I saw it, I felt like she was a kindred spirit. The images capture something that’s both recognizable and yet mysterious. The simplicity of the portraits deepen your curiosity about the subject. And to be quite honest, I’m totally jealous I didn’t get to take a couple of these shots! But, I wasn’t shooting much when I was four years old.

James is having a public opening for the show this Thursday. I’m attending, and would love to see you there.
