On the Street….Aoyama, Tokio
Right now the most interesting movement in Tokio street fashion is not Harajuku (I never really understood that) but actually young kids playing around with the idea of kimonos, in a modern way. As you see in the pictures, the kimonos are usually worn somewhat traditionally, but it’s the accessories they really have fun with. Purple hair, cowboy boots, ways of tying the obi, accessories in the obi…
It seems like such fertile ground for creative expression. I look forward to seeing more examples when I return next.

This is my beloved Grandmother, Ella, c. late 1930s, as a University student. I am told she was helping to collect bird specimens for Cornell University. I love her confidence, and that she wore a skirt and heels for fieldwork!

A photo of my grandfather John on the beach in Sea Isle City, NJ in 1930. Everyone called him “Chick” – I’ve been told it’s because of his chicken legs!

The Sartorialist in Stockholm
Hi all,
I’m returning to Stockholm next week!
In addition to roaming the streets for the blog, I will doing a book signing at Nordiska Kompaniet on August 10th from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM. They are one of my favorite stores in Stockholm and I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with them.
So, come and say hi if you’ll be in town! I’m excited to get the chance to connect again with readers from Stockholm. Photos I took there were a big part of my book, after all!

This is my uncle, John Barron, standing on the shore of the village of Equihen, France, where he and my father grew up.
John was a true sartorialist; when the other kids were running around in shorts and espadrilles, he would carefully craft an ensemble to wear to the beach. His cravat here is probably one of my grandfather’s oversized handkerchiefs. One of John’s best friends was a Parisienne who came to Equihen for her summers; she scandalized the village by promenading down the main street in beach pajamas. It was the first time the village women had seen a lady wearing trousers.
John was killed in a torpedo attack during World II. A couple of years ago, I got to see his diary, which was filled with expressions of longing for his boyfriend, a British army officer serving in South Africa. It was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever read.

Last Chance for Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
Garance and I went to the McQueen Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and were blown away.
It’s really just incredible. I urge everyone who has the chance, to go see it. The Met will be open until midnight on Saturday and Sunday to accomodate visitors – and since it doesn’t seem the show will be traveling, I can see why.
Garance was given special permission to return and take photos; if you can’t make it, and even if you can, I think you’ll see in her photos (here) what we were so moved by.

Welcome to TheSartorialist.com!
Welcome to our new home, TheSartorialist.com. (Make sure to change your bookmark!)
I have been working on this relaunch for a while and I am so happy to get a chance to share this with you. I’ve tried to keep the clean, very visual layout of the original blog while making it easier to navigate.
Just for fun – type in a word to the Search bar. Here’s what I did… Giovanna. I love how that page looks.
Then there’s Categories. Select “Women.” Roll over the image and check out how that title bar scrolls across the image!
As for Tags…play around with it! I’ve had a lot of fun tagging my favorites – “Classic Italian“, or “Androgyny“… Notice you can browse by Oldest, Newest, or Most Commented.
I also love that the images are slightly larger than before – and we’ll also have horizontal images that will be EVEN larger.
I want to thank Colorz for their artistry and patience, Cara and Anthony for pushing the project through, and Garance for her inspiration and guidance.
Please click everywhere, test the website, this is our space – and then come back here and let me know what you think in the comments!
