I love the look of this scarf knot and how the lines of the pattern emphasize the intricate technique.

The New Hope…..Reed Krakoff, NYC

Retailers must be drooling over Reed Krakoffs debut collection.

To have a new collection (press!), designed by an already proven (commercially successful!) designer* and backed by a large commercially successful mega-brand (confidence) to offer their customers next Fall.

Yes, retailers will be happy to buy into Mr. Krakoffs inspired design but they will be even more thrilled to buy into a “new” collection that they believe will be able to deliver on time, not struggle with sizing and fit issues for the first few seasons and be there at the end of the season if things don’t work out as planned. Unless the prices are through the roof retailers will be buying into the whole package. Confidence is something retailers have not been able to buy much of lately.

Designer, Reed Krakoff, is in a very enviable position right now.

Mr. Krakoff hit that sweet spot of design that is just aspirational enough while still being something that you can imagine in your everyday life. Sometimes creating desire can be so simple….just give us what we want, just slightly better than we could have imagined ourself. That is what this collection seems like to me.

*Mr. Krakoff ,for those of you that don’t know, is the man behind the turn around of Coach.

The Sartorialist on The Treatment with Elvis Mitchell

I met Elvis a few years back at a Thom Browne show. I really appreciate his genuine love of style and fashion, he’s a real fan.

Recently we sat down and had a chat for his radio show The Treatment.
Elvis was kind enough to let me post that segment here.

The Sartorialist for GQ at The Fasano, Rio de Janeiro

Enough snow for a day…can we go back to Rio?
I tried shooting my March GQ page in about 4 different locations but it just wasn’t working…and I was running out of time. I had already made the commitment to attend the Rio Fashion week but I was more than a little nervous that I would find enough in Rio to fill my page. After scouting Rio for a day (a very hot, uncomfortable day) I returned to the Fasano hotel and went straight to the pool.
In two seconds I knew that my next page would be all about the pool scene at the Fasano in Rio. Neil Barrett, Dean Caten of DSquared, Luca Rubinacci and enough local “beautiful people” to fill seven pages of GQ.

I don’t know why but Dean Caten of DSquared decided to throw a wedding bouquet of flowers to all the “single ladies” at the pool. Although this shot is fun, I should have filmed him marching around the pool grabbing the ladies to participate. Mr. Caten does have an unusual charm with the ladies.

I think all you need in Rio is a hot bathing suit, cool sunglasses and something to wear to and from the airport.
Garance also loved the Fasano but she loved the fresh coconut drinks even more. Here is a link to Garance Fasano post

Why Can’t I Buy Gloves Right Now?

It has been snowing all day today….and yet, I can’t buy a pair of gloves in New York City.

There’s something wrong with this system.

It seems super ridiculous that the shops are full of Spring merchandise right now.

Do you really want to be buying shorts in this weather?

Fashion Week – See You There Soon?

With the growing number of fashion designers ?live streaming? their fashion shows and the almost immediate availability of photographs online after the show, it has become less important for fashion editors to attend the shows.

Which opens the door to you, the fashion fan.

Don?t you think it?s only a matter of time before these shows are open to the public? With live streaming the designers are basically side stepping mainstream fashion media and speaking directly to you. It?s only a matter of time before a Marc Jacobs show is an event no different than Broadway or a Knick?s game (but, hopefully better than a Knick?s game).

I mean, let?s think about it, designers always say that one of their biggest expenses are fashion shows. It?s always one of the first things to get cut when times are hard. But, if they had the ability to sell tickets to these shows, it would actually become a profit maker instead of a necessary loss.

I see a day in the near future where editors and celebrities occupy the two front rows and an audience of fashion fans fill a venue with the ability to place orders as they leave on their hand held device, if they?re so inclined.

Would you pay to go to a show?

Mark my words; you?re not far away. Start picking out your outfit now and I?ll see you there.

When Garance and I are just too tired to “go out” for dinner in Milan. We always seem able to drag ourselves to Bagutta.

Try the antipasti bar or the pepper steak. Well, it all seems to be good and the people watching is superb.

Who Said Milan Isn’t Beautiful?

I know…Rome is historical.
I know…Florence is quaint.
I know…Venice is romantic.
Well, did you know…Milan is beautiful.

Milan’s history (actually “continued history”) of wealth and commerce has filled its streets with buildings, shops, and restaurants that rival any of those other cities.

Personally, I find Rome and Venice just too directed to the tourist trade. I’m sure there is still charm in those two cities but, you have to work hard to find it. I’m actually more curious about the lost romance of cities like Turin, Bologna and Naples.

My next trip to Milan I will shoot around the city a little more and revisit some of the shops and restaurants that made me fall in love with Milan in the first place. I know some of those original posts are hard to find.

On the Street….Emerald, Milano

This young man of emerald is Gert Jonkers, co-Publisher of FANTASTIC MAN.

FANTASTIC MAN has quickly become one of my favorite men’s style guides printed today. I hesitate to call it a magazine because it is just so much cooler than most of the men’s magazines available right now. It is also one of the few men’s magazines that is heavily devoted to fashion, style and the gentlemen that excel in that arena.

Anyway, the reason I bring this up now is within the pages of their latest edition. Inside, Gert and Jop (another co-Publisher) have quietly introduced, “THE GENTLEWOMAN.”

I know, we don’t need another new women’s fashion magazine right now. However, I say we don’t need another bad women’s fashion magazine right now. I think THE GENTLEWOMAN has a chance to be something truly different. I am very excited that the first two big interviews and related editorials feature super cool women, Melanie Ward and fashion PR powerhouse, Karla Otto.

So ladies, if you see the copy of FANTASTIC MAN with Ewan McGregor on the cover, don’t be afraid to take a peek inside. You might find something you like…

Some of my Barcelona shots had to wait till the GQ issue I was shooting them for finally hit the stands.

When I first saw this guy from across the street, I thought he was wearing some kind of crazy suspenders. As it turns out he had just delivered some art supplies….sometimes confusion breeds inspiration. I mean, suspenders that hook into your belt loops seems very Ann Demeulemeester

The Kid’s Alright

Thanks everyone for your sincere responses to yesterday’s “grace” post. It’s one of the posts I’m most proud of and it didn’t even have a photograph. Hmmm…maybe I really have to work on this writing thing a bit more.

Anyway, to bring this discussion full circle, I received this email from my 11 year old yesterday written in giant pink letters.

“hi its me, izzy. u told me 2 send u an email asking u 2 send me pics so cool. yea…
love you…
izzy
*i did the big font just 4 u! “

Well, my kids might need help with “please” and “thank you” but they’re on the right track for gracefulness.
