This kid and his Dad were playing at the park. The kid was literally climbing the walls or ,in this case, fences. I love that he has a feather in his hair – I don’t know how healthy that is but kids are strong.

The “trad” kid on the scooter is also part of the family – I’m seeing a Family Ties meets the Lower East Side sitcom in the future for this family

What Your Socks Say About Your Nationality -UPDATE

I knew I had a photo of a Brit with maroon socks – this photo was taken at the Paul Smith show in Paris. Could it get more Brit than that?

One of the most asked questions to style experts is “Should my socks match my shoes or my pants?” The answer you get may depend on where you live. The Americans (top photo) advice matching socks to your pants, The Italians (bottom photo) seem to contrast with both shoes and pants. The English , always the eccentrics, wear maroon socks with everything! I have a photo to defend this point but I will have to post it later due to problems with my laptop – stupid laptop!

My Photo Shoot for Menswear Magazine

So yesterday I was on the other side of the camera having my portrait taken for Menswear magazine. Since they wanted my camera in the shot I thought I would just shoot while I was being shot – confusing?

Makeup – Actually this is not the makeup they used on me. My makeup was by a company called Sherwin-Williams? I don’t know much about makeup but they said it gave me a shiny coat and that it won’t chip or peel in the most extreme conditions!
This is me after makeup but before changing into my Bob Mackie Original gown!
I never go anywhere without my softbox and scrim. Didn’t Veerland say something like “beauty is all in the lighting” ?

Question From The Sartorialist Email – Slim Shorts For Men

I have not done this before and I’m not really an advice guy but I often get emails asking style questions so I thought it would be fun to post this one.

Dear Sartorialist
I love your blog TS. It’s just wonderful! It’s really a gift!

Can you help me. I’m trying to find men’s shorts that are tapered like Italian slacks. Thin in the leg instead of the ridiculous blouson shorts made by every single American manufacturer (and many European ones as well). I buy most of my suits/pants at Eredi Pisano. They have shorts in their catalog but you can’t get them here. Burberry’s has some thin ones but they are only so so. Borrelli’s are wide (surprising). Any ideas?

Dear Reader
I don’t know where to find truly tapered shorts (some of the madras seem a little more slim if you like madras) but shorter shorts are on the horizon which will have a more slimming effect.

Think tennis shorts – I saw a few editors in Europe during the mens shows doing it and I’m now seeing realistic versions in the showrooms.

Here is a guy at the Junya Watanabe show wear the shorter short successfully

Thanks for the question, I hope it helps.

Do any of the readers have a suggestion on slim shorts?

At The Collective – Green Seersucker Suit

First of all, great cut and great fit on this suit – pant length just about perfect

This is this gentleman’s second time on The Sartorialist (I also featured him during Fashion Week back in Feb, he was wearing a great bowtie then also) I love that his style is just this side of Dandy. The cut and shape and quality are all very respectable but he makes this look outstanding by choosing a reasonable shade of green and then pairing it with high-quality, serious accessories.
In the wrong hands this could have gone clownish but he really pulls it off.

He has also created a signature for himself with his elegant bowtie. if you think about it most guys with great style have something that is their signature, (a color or brand or an accessory) it may be subtle but it is always there. Do you know what your sartorial signature is? Mine is always having a camera stuck to my hand!

He really could have messed up the whole look with the pocket square choice but instead of going outlandish he went subtle and choose an edging that complimented the tone of the green and even compliments the tone of his shoe color.
Very Well Done – and a nice way to advance seersucker past just blues and tans.

On The Street……..Fashion Insiders Working Wardrobe, New York

What do you wear when you work in a creative field but maybe not in the creative department?

This woman was walking out of the #1 fashion building on 7th Ave (NYers will know which one) and she really looked great – so well put together. I have no idea what she does but I thought she doesn’t necessarily look like a designer but a designer would love to have someone that looked like her (or should I say has her type of style) managing his/her business, or pr, or whatever.

ps. the dress comes up a little darkin the photo but there is a great pleating detail at the center of the neckline that really makes the dress pop.

On The Street……..Grey Denim, New York

Maybe I’m not a big denim guy but I haven’t seen a lot of dark grey unwashed(?) denim. This is one of those pure inspiration posts – I don’t know if I would wear this look but I love the dark grey denim with the brown leather boots. It makes me want to find some dark grey denim (maybe APC) and work it with brown shoes, socks (maybe), blue button down-shirt, navy blazer, and a crisp white pocket square for Fall. A younger, sportier alternative to grey flannel pants.

It is like 100 degrees in New York and I’m already thinking Fall!!

A lot of times when I shoot something it is because I’m trying to figure out how I can use a detail from that look to effect my own wardrobe – this is a great example.

At Calvin Klein, Milan

The space for the Calvin Klein show in Milan was really small but beautiful with perfect lighting. There were a lot of great looking people at the show and since the space was so tight I decided to sit outside and review my shots,

As I’m sitting there I look out to the back courtyard and see a group of painters taking an afternoon break. One guy absolutely stands-out, its the scarf – really, what American house-painter wears a scarf that way to paint! Brilliant.

And that face!

I knew the shot was going to be great and I didn’t want to let it get away so I walked out, smiled, and kinda grabbed his arm and pulled him into the space and set him up against the same wall I had shot the other fashionistas. He was a little shocked but also flattered because I took several shots and he seemed very happy to participate.

I don’t speak Italian but when he got back to the other painters I could tell they were really riding him! You don’t need to speak Italian to imagine they were calling him “model boy” for the rest of the afternoon! Thanks painter guy – you made my day!!

WWD is reporting that Rochas will discontinue its RTW business to focus on the Rochas beauty business.

This is so sad – I loved Rochas and thought it had such an influence on the designer market.

What is the upside?

Every major brand with a less than stellar performance will be reviewing contracts and trying to figure out how to get Olivier.

Where do we think he will end up?

his own label? supported by who?

With Hedi/Dior supposedly in play this could really shake some things up

What a great summer dress – volume and yet it still has a very light airy feel. The above knee hem is the key to the dress not overwhelming her or seeming like too much volume for a warm summer morning. Also I think having her hair up and off her neck is a contributing factor to the literal coolness of the look.

I have officially seen enough superslim jeans on the Lower East Side. These look so fresh to me – sure he is slim but the jeans have a little leg room, they are loosely rolled instead of a uberwide turn-up and they look much more comfortable than superslims to wear in the heat of summer.
I saw a lot of topsiders in Europe -in straight brown they seem like they are trying too hard to be nostalgic but in blue they seem just right.

Just Another Super Chic Parisian Woman

I’m noticing a trend – women of “a certain age” wearing all white with one dramatic design detail to really pop the look.

The first three women wear all white with a dramatic necklace that adds a shot of intense color. In the last shot, from backstage of the Dries Van Noten show, the woman wears all white with the dramatic ruffle-front shirt as the main design detail.

I think all of them look fantastic. Simply clean, refined and yet even a bit sporty -they don’t look as if their clothes will get in the way of what they have to do today.

Actually a friend on mine asked me to buy an outfit for his wife (though she is not of a certain age) to take to London. I guess I was inspired by these photos because I bought her an all-white ensemble of linen pants, long white tunic/dress to layer over the pants with a simple white tank and a beautiful gauzy shawl to cover-up with in the evening. I’m still looking for the perfect dramatic piece of jewelry to really set it off.

World Cup After Party – p1

It is good to be back in New York!

As I walked around the city Sunday I was amazed at just how many people were watching the World Cup in big crowds at restaurants and bars. I don’t even see crowds like this for a Yankees World Series game (MLB should learn to put World Series games on in the day).

Of course, because it was France vs Italy instead of rioting after the victory, a huge fashion show broke out downtown in Nolita – I just happened to walk right into the middle of it.

Traveling to Milan and Paris it has helped me see New York in a different way and see what we do well. We do ironic well, we do vintage well, and we do “so-bad-it-is-good” well. All of these qualities were on full display yesterday on Spring Street.

Paris Couture Week

Paris Couture was starting a few days after the men’s shows. My hotel was right next the the historic Chanel Boutique on Rue Cambon so every morning I had to fight through a throng of dangerous looking model-types as they hung outside Chanel waiting for the casting.

At Miu Miu

Miu Miu was consistently mentioned by the editors i spoke to as one of the best shows in Milan. I have never paid that much attention to it but I was really surprised how much I saw that I really loved.

I think this blue passage was very good for the color inspiration – I could completely see mixing some sporty shorts (like Umbro soccer shorts) in a similar color intensity with a cardigan/shirt as shown with a pair of Jack Purcells for next Spring. Hopefully Miu Miu has a different option for the bottom in the sales collection – that would make my life so much easier.

Milan Favorites

These are some of my favorites from the Milan shows but for very personal reasons. Obviously the photos are from

Valentino I have been working my ass off in the gym and my shoulders are finally where I want them to be so this look could definitely be good for summer casual dinners in Manhattan.

Bottega Veneta I usually hate short sleeves but this has a slightly more refined yet sporty feel, almost military

Burberry love the pale color palette

Burberry Forget the hat but Christopher is doing a great job at reworking the full, pleated pant.
