On the Street…University Place, New York

At the end of the day yesterday when I was walking home, I saw this young woman walking ahead of me and I couldn’t tell if the seam on her inside-out shrunken sweatshirt (typically so boyish) was an intentionally scalloped edge or if it was just the effect created of the seam buckling.

Whether it was an intentional design detail or not, I liked the purpose it served. It gave the sweatshirt a new feminine feel.

The Sartorialist’s Italian Tips….Romeo Viganotti

I hate when locals hide the best stuff for themselves.

Luckily when I was in Genova last month, my friend Lorenzo let me in on a secret location so hidden, that even he has a hard time finding it sometimes (if you know the streets and alleys of Genova, Lorenzo’s confusion is understandable).

My only regret is that I was introduced to this confectioner at the age of 47 and not 7. I can only imagine what this place must look like to a kid just tall enough to be eye level with the display case. A rolling wax paper plain of chocolate poured over fruits, nuts, candied jellies…mmmmmm, I’m getting hungry just writing this.

But even with the restraint of a 47 year old, I walked out with a bag full of treats that only made it about two streets away before I found the despair of an empty bag (but hey, it was July in Italy, they were going to melt anyway, so off my case).

If You’re Thinking About…Racerbacks

On the Street…Fifth Ave., New York

8515fifthaveA1159Almost every girl should have a racerback dress in her wardrobe.

At least once a day in New York I see a woman that looks great wearing some form of a racerback design. It must be something about the counterbalance of giving an appearance of a stronger shoulder and a more narrow waist. In this particular picture, it also helps that she has belted the dress. Again, in the summer, I see dozen’s of women wearing very long, and what they would consider flowy, but what I would consider oversized-shapeless dresses.

On a final note, I also love that this dress is in a dark blue with the subtle touch of a green shoe. There’s so much basic black and white on the street right now, that it’s nice to see dark toned color on a summer evening.

And by the way, don’t you think more stores should invest in mirrors that make it easier to see the back of the outfit? A lot of the time, like in this look, it carries the whole outfit.

On the Street…Checks or Plaids?

So we’re having a little debate at the studio this morning…are these checks or are they plaids?
