On the Street….The Bus Driver, Mumbai

110714BusDriverC2490Web

I love this uniform! Notice the crisp crease on his shirt sleeve,  how he does that in the wilting humid heat of Mumbai is beyond me.

What really impressed me about so many of the men in India is how well-groomed they are!

It’s so refreshing to see the traditional craft and culture of the local barber still alive and thriving in India.

REPOST On the Street…Morning Flower Market, Mumbai

110714Girl6B6224Web

My recent trip to India was amazing. As you’ve seen in the images that I posted last week, they help take the blog in a new direction.

That being said, I think some of the images have confused a portion of the audience as to why I feel they fit into the context of this blog.

If there was any confusion before, let me make it clear now that I don’t categorize The Sartorialist as just a fashion or street style blog. For me, it’s always been a personal, visual diary of my life and — as I’ve always stated — I feel that these images are portraits of people whose clothing can help create a story about who they might be (for most of these people  I’ll never know the truth).  Like the variety of real life, some of these images will be happy or sad, confusing or enlightening, compelling or repelling.  Just like in music, no musical artist would sing all happy love songs, so why would I shoot only happy street style images?  We’re all adults here and I don’t think I have to hold you by the hand and explain how each shot should make you feel.  Yes, this is quite a bit different from the other street style blogs I’m often grouped with, but that’s what very happily sets me apart from the crowd.  These types of images are also no longer new to the blog; I’ve already shot in countries like South Africa, Morocco, Bali, Peru, China, the UAE, now India, and will be shooting early next year Nepal and Bhutan.  As I prepare my third book I hope to achieve a combination of 50% to 60% fashion images and 50% to 40% cultural images.  It might be hard to see the forest through the trees, but after a few more years of expanding my travels, I will have a catalog of images that will truly capture a view of the world and its people during this period in time

The image of this young girl in the flower market is not a fashion photograph.

It’s not about how cute her dress is or is not. And, unfortunately, this is not your typical happy image of a carefree child. None of us know the exact truth of this young girl’s situation, but, what I see in an image like this, is the spirit of a young girl with dreams like any young girl would posses, anywhere around the world. I see her youthful spirit expressed in the joyful colors of her dress and bracelets, but I also see the contrast of having to balance the reality of her daily life. The burden is represented by the bundle of flowers she carries. The way her face is cast down, you literally feel the weight of that burden on her back. I think it’s a beautifully heartbreaking photograph for anyone, like me, who is a parent. At the same time, however, we absolutely don’t know the truth of the image. For all we know she could be helping her family maintain a prosperous flower stall, much like how my father helped on the farm in North Dakota while he was growing up in the 1930′s.  If this image outrages you and makes you want to do something about abolishing child labor, great! Let’s not forget Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl photograph is also beautifully heartbreaking, and made a huge difference in the plight of Afghan refugees during the Afghan/Soviet conflict of 1984.

I ran into my new friend at the Armani Caffé again this week in Milan.  She speaks little to no English, but we are still becoming fast friends.

It seems an espresso at Armani is the way she starts most days, not a bad life.  I think we will see more of her on this blog soon.

Band Of Outsiders…70 Wooster Street, New York

final5final12final16Congrats to Scott Sternberg and Band of Outsiders for opening their first U.S. Store this fall, right here in New York. The coolest thing about the store is that it doesn’t feel quite like a store. Sure there are clothes, and sure there are sales people, but the space is so open, that it feels almost like your cool friends neatly organized closet (if his or her closet was the size of a gallery).

The Screening Room…Now Voyager

now-voyager-movie-posterFile this movie under greatest transformations of all time. nowvoyagerCan’t stress how good of a movie this is for style inspiration. Bette Davis goes from forgotten-spinster-aunt to honestly one of the chicest women you will ever see on film. To see such a drastic character transformation take place, will pleasantly surprise and remind you of how much is within your power.

This goes for style but it also stands true for the extremely complicated way in which we each see ourselves.

Because she feels badly about herself on the inside, she doesn’t believe she deserves to portray pretty on the outside. By pushing her to play the part of a lovely woman, she is made to realize that she is in fact lovely and that all it took to carry an evening gown was a woman who believed in herself.

It’s not that you should be valued by what’s on the outside – it’s the idea that sometimes seeing the beauty of your outside, can make you realize, your inside was just as lovely all along.

The Reading List….Marella Agnelli: The Last Swan

Do yourself a favor and devote (at the LEAST), an evening to this beautiful new book. While reading her stories, you’ll discover that the elegance of Marella far extends her beautiful gaze and mesmerizing long neck…

You’ll realize that the same poise that comes through in a photograph of Marella, is emitted in the homes and the friendships that she kept.

**Not to mention this book is way more satisfying and much less calories than you’re typical night time indulgence (less than mine anyway,  why Ben & Jerry’s, why?)

Back to your newest indulgence -

I think a lot of large coffee table books end up with too much of a separation between the writing and the images. I’m telling you that is not the case here. Dedicate the time that this book justly deserves. Sit down and enjoy it. How rare to be able to read first hand, about such a beautiful life. The photos will entice you and the words will hold your heart.

Tim’s Vermeer: A Penn & Teller Film, Now on iTunes

tims_vermeer

Has anyone seen this movie?

The documentary follows an inventor (Tim) as he recreates a Vermeer painting. Tim is mystified by how Vermeer could have painted so realistically before the invention of photography.

Even if the subject matter doesn’t grab you – it’s fascinating to watch. If for nothing else, just to see the lengths Tim will go to in search of discovery.

Henri Matisse The Cut-Outs….Now at the MoMA

photo-4photo-11 photo-12      Unless you are a Fine Artist by trade – I think it’s rare to leave an art exhibit thinking, “i’d like to go home and try that myself.”

I was looking around in the gift shop after seeing the Matisse Cut-Out show at the MoMA, when the charming little tin glue-can above caught my eye (comes with a brush that fits perfectly in the center). Naturally, I had to get it (along with a pad of construction paper in order to rediscover my inner Matisse).vence-explore   I think what’s especially nice about the cut-outs exhibit is that it feels so approachable (who didn’t spend at least a couple childhood afternoons cutting and pasting together colorful sheets of paper, creating odd and abstract shapes).

Matisse used this technique to find harmony between line and color. He was able to cut directly into the painted paper and “draw with scissors” as he so smartly put it.

photo-112       Let’s just say i’m not quite there yet with my own paper-cut-out-masterpiece but the process is simple and most importantly it’s fun.

Monday Inspiration…The Shape of It All

11314_bookscan1How great are these image pairings? I found this little book (only 6 x 8 inches) at a library the other day and had to scan in some of the pages to share.  11314_bookscan211314_bookscan311314_bookscan611314_bookscan7What little writing there was, was in german-so I can’t tell you too much. The title was simply “Art Deco with the subtitle translating to “get shape between two”.

That translation seems rough but it’s also charmingly simple. Maybe i’m hypersensitive to the idea of matching and pairing as I work on my next book – but I can’t help but love these clever comparisons of images.

I love when something so unassuming turns out to be so impactful.
