On the Street….Fashion in Detail, Mumbai

111514MumbaiB6328WebFull

I loved the subtle way this man nodded to the green shirt he was wearing with a matching green stripe running along the bottom of his lungi. Brings up the question of whether a small detail like this is intentional or not. I like to think it is.

The Reading List…The French Ribbon

121514RibbonWebLow

The decoration of choice for an ensemble throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: The French Ribbon (newly out this fall), catalogues ribbons produced out of Saint-Etienne, a town once considered to be the world capital of ribbons and ribbon production.

These small strips of fabric added such vibrancy and distinction to their wearers clothing. Although most of todays fashionable opt for a ribbon-less look, these beautiful pieces do not stop from inspiring. Most importantly, they’re a welcome reminder to the dressing of days past.

The Screening Room….13 Lessons With Saul Leiter

121514SaulWeb1

Saul Leiter has become an icon of New York street photography and yet to me, he was a bit of a mystery (as I think he was to most people). So I was very happy to see this documentary on iTunes that seemed to just pop-up out of nowhere.

It’s not a great documentary, it’s more of a conversation, but it’s still always fascinating to see the simple way an icon goes about his work.

Watching the film I discovered that Mr. Leiter was apparently my neighbor! For 60 years he lived just east of where I live now. It would be great to think that at some point we passed each other out on the street. One of the truly great things about New York – you never know who might be living just down the block.

Purposeful Design: 2016 Ford Explorer at the L.A. Auto Show

I always learn new things about design when I’m collaborating, and working with Ford at the Los Angeles Auto Show last month was no exception. Check out the video I shot with them to hear my thoughts on the all-new design and purposeful attention to detail of the 2016 Ford Explorer.

Frida Giannini Leaving Gucci…Who’s Next?

Guc3480Web1

Frida Giannini’s reign at Gucci is over.

Riccardo Tisci is speculated as a front runner to take over for her, but it seems he’s built a whole world and culture around his vision of the Givenchy brand.

There’s a lot of names being thrown around, but I’d love to see Proenza Schouler in that position. I have no idea if they have any contracts that prevent them from doing a job like that, but I just feel that they have that edge of sexiness and the ability to play on an international stage.

Long White Gloves for Bicycling, Varanasi, India

After yesterday’s post on long white gloves was published, my assistant pointed out that the first two images were actually of the same woman. Because my schedule in India was so unstructured, I would have thought the chances of shooting the same woman twice would have been infinitesimal.

To see someone, halfway around the world, with my same passion for mixing color and pattern, made me feel an instant kinship to this mystery woman.

Varanasi Micro-Trend: Long White Gloves for Bicycling

111214BikeB7131Web

I love the speed, strength, and vitally you see in these young, mobile woman.

I’m very happy that I was able to document this beautiful expression considering I was usually sitting in the the back of a rickshaw, heading equally fast in the opposite direction.  (If you notice the eye angle of these shots is slightly different than past bicycle shots it’s because, in the rickshaw, I was usually sitting slightly higher than the subject.)

On the Street….Cricket in the Park, Mumbai

I loved spending an hour or so watching these guys play cricket in the park, not far from my hotel.

It really felt like a quintessential Mumbai moment, but — at the same time — if  I squinted my eyes, it felt/looked exactly like guys playing baseball back home in Central Park.  And yes, of course I tried to hit the ball (don’t ask how I fared).

On the Street….Howard St., New York

Yesterday in Soho, I saw this young lady who had self-styled a Woolrich Coat by adding her own panels to the sleeves. I love when people take design into their own hands. The coat’s still great and classic on it’s own – but why not add your own unique detail? It’s great to see a person take some creative initiative with their clothing, and stand away from the crowd.

Not only did this super chic gentleman I shot for Faces by The Sartorialist have great style, he also wore a beautiful pair of vintage frames.

Here’s a great example of strong accessories really making a look. The clothing is actually so simple, but his accessories are what play off of each other and bring everything together.

On the Street…Rue Cambon Front & Back, Paris

93014BackC8054Web93014FrontC7992WebIt’s funny how your perception changes, as your perspective changes.

As I walked along Rue Cambon I saw this young lady from the back and thought how sexy and almost daring she looked wearing what appeared to be basically- from my perspective – a sport-coat and legs. As I walked past her and my perspective changed, I stopped and asked if I could take a photo of her. The same look from the front totally changed my perception. With her blouse buttoned to the neck and a sweater over it, her look from the front, is actually quite quaint and demure.

Faces by The Sartorialist Contributor….Lucas Simões

This is Lucas, he’s an artist from Brazil who explores new ways of reconstructing objects, materials, and photographs.

As a contributor for my Faces by The Sartorialist project, Lucas made this interpretive piece of art, to show us what eyewear means to him. Through his use of cutaways and spheres, we’re able to see beyond the top image, into the layers of photographs and self portraits that make up the whole. It’s a great video, a very cool expression and a rare look into the process of an artist.
